Chapter 9: The Boy in Room 214

Daniel didn't wait for another explanation.

He grabbed his keys.

“Marcus, call your attorney. Get copies of every document in that box to her immediately.””

Marcus nodded.

“And Vanessa?”” he asked.

Daniel looked at his wife.

“She's staying here until we know whether she's involved in the theft.””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“You can't be serious.””

“I'm not letting anyone leave with evidence or disappear before we understand what happened.””

“You think I'm going to run?””

“I don't know what to think anymore.””

The words hurt her more than shouting would have.

Vanessa looked toward Maya, perhaps expecting the girl to defend her.

Maya turned away.

Daniel opened the front door.

“Elena, you're coming with me.””

Elena nodded and reached for her coat.

Maya hurried after them.

“I'm coming, too.””

Daniel stopped.

“Sweetheart, this isn't a place for you to be right now.””

“It's my brother.””

“I know.””

“Then I need to see him.””

Elena knelt in front of her daughter.

“We don't know what we'll find at the hospital. He might be frightened. He might not want to meet us.””

Maya swallowed.

“What if he doesn't know he has a family?””

Elena's face crumpled.

“Then we'll have to be very gentle.””

Daniel looked at his daughter for a long moment.

Finally, he nodded.

“But you stay beside me. No matter what happens.””

They drove to St. Agnes Medical Center in silence.

Daniel kept both hands on the steering wheel, gripping it so tightly that his knuckles turned white. Elena sat in the passenger seat, staring through the windshield. Maya sat in the back with the letter on her lap.

The city passed in streaks of headlights and wet pavement.

At a red light, Daniel spoke.

“What if he hates us?””

Elena turned toward him.

“He doesn't know us.””

“That's not what I asked.””

She lowered her eyes.

“I don't know, Daniel.””

He swallowed.

“I missed his first steps. His first words. His first day of school. I wasn't there when he was sick or when he was scared.””

Elena reached for his hand.

He pulled away.

“Please don't.””

She withdrew her fingers.

Maya watched them, wishing she could make the pain stop.

At the hospital, a nurse directed them to the pediatric ward.

The corridor smelled of disinfectant and warm plastic. A television played quietly in the waiting area, where a little boy in striped pajamas sat beside his grandmother, drawing on a paper placemat.

Daniel approached the reception desk.

“We're looking for a patient named—”

He stopped.

They didn't know the boy's name.

Elena looked at Michael's message again.

“Room 214,” she said.

The nurse frowned.

“I'm sorry. I can't give out patient information without authorization.””

Daniel produced his identification.

“I'm Daniel Reed. We believe a child in that room may be my son.””

The nurse's expression softened, but she shook her head.

“I understand this is important. However, I need to contact the attending physician.””

“Please,” Elena said.

“We've been searching for him for six years.””

The nurse studied their faces.

Then she picked up the phone.

A few minutes later, a doctor appeared.

He was in his fifties, with tired eyes and a white coat that had a pen clipped to the pocket.

“I'm Dr. Bennett,” he said.

“You mentioned a child in Room 214?””

Daniel showed him the message.

The doctor read it twice.

His expression became guarded.

“Who sent you this?””

“My brother.””

“What's his name?””

“Michael Reed.””

Dr. Bennett exchanged a glance with the nurse.

“I'm afraid there's been a misunderstanding.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Is there a boy in Room 214 who has been asking questions about his adoption?””

The doctor hesitated.

“Yes.””

“What's his name?””

“His name is Lucas.””

Elena covered her mouth.

Daniel's eyes filled.

“Lucas.””

The name was unfamiliar, yet it felt as though it had been waiting inside him for years.

Dr. Bennett continued.

“Lucas was admitted yesterday after fainting at school. His medical examination revealed a condition that requires further testing. During the evaluation, he asked whether the hospital could help him locate his biological parents.””

Daniel stared at him.

“What condition?””

“I'm not able to discuss his medical information until his legal guardian authorizes it.””

“I'm his father.””

“I understand that you believe that. But until we establish the relationship, I must follow the proper procedures.””

Daniel's frustration surged.

“Someone stole my son and changed his records. How much more proof do you need?””

Elena touched his arm.

“Daniel. Let him help us.””

Dr. Bennett took a breath.

“Lucas has a social worker. I'll contact her and explain the situation. If there's evidence of a fraudulent adoption, the appropriate authorities will need to be involved.””

“How long will that take?”” Maya asked.

The doctor looked down at her.

“I can't promise you an exact timeline.””

Maya's face fell.

She had waited six years for her mother.

She couldn't bear the thought of waiting another day to meet her brother.

“Please,” she whispered.

“I just want to say hello.””

Dr. Bennett studied her for a moment.

Then he nodded.

“I'll ask whether he's comfortable meeting you.””

He disappeared down the corridor.

Daniel sank into a chair.

Elena sat beside him, leaving a careful distance between them.

“I never stopped looking,” she whispered.

Daniel stared at the floor.

“You stopped coming home.””

“I thought I was protecting them.””

“And now?””

“Now I know I should have found another way.””

He finally looked at her.

“Do you understand what you've done to us?””

Elena nodded, tears sliding down her cheeks.

“Yes.””

“No, Elena. You understand what you did to me. You don't understand what you did to Maya.””

Maya looked up.

“Dad.””

Daniel immediately turned toward her.

“I'm sorry, sweetheart.””

“Please don't fight.””

He closed his eyes.

Then he reached for her hand.

“I won't.””

A door opened at the far end of the corridor.

Dr. Bennett returned with a woman wearing a dark green cardigan and carrying a clipboard.

“I'm Sarah Collins, Lucas's social worker,” she said.

“The doctor explained your concerns.””

Daniel stood.

“We believe Lucas is our biological son.””

Sarah looked at Elena.

“You recognize him?””

“I haven't seen him since the day he was born.””

“Do you have documentation?””

Elena handed her the birth records, the trust agreement, and the letter from her father.

Sarah read through the pages carefully.

“This is serious,” she said.

“I'll need to verify the records and notify the hospital's legal department. We may also need a court order before we can formally establish parental rights.””

Daniel's shoulders sagged.

“But can we see him?””

Sarah hesitated.

“Lucas has been asking about his biological family. He's frightened, and he's had a difficult few days. If he agrees to meet you, I don't see a reason to prevent a supervised introduction.””

She turned toward the ward.

“Give me a moment.””

Maya held her breath.

When Sarah returned, she was alone.

“Lucas would like to meet Maya first.””

Daniel blinked.

“Why Maya?””

Sarah offered a gentle smile.

“He said he wants to meet his sister.””

Maya stared at her.

“He knows about me?””

“He was shown a photograph and some preliminary records. He asked to see you.””

Elena began to cry quietly.

Daniel knelt in front of Maya.

“You don't have to do this if you're not ready.””

Maya shook her head.

“I am.””

He brushed her hair away from her face.

“Then go slowly. Let him decide how much he wants to say.””

Sarah led Maya down the corridor.

Room 214 was at the end, beside a window overlooking the hospital courtyard.

A boy sat on the bed with a blanket over his legs.

He looked about twelve, perhaps a little older. His dark hair fell across his forehead, and a thin scar marked the edge of his chin. An open book rested beside him, but he wasn't reading.

He was staring at the door.

When Maya entered, he sat straighter.

“Hi,” she said.

“Hi.””

Neither knew what to do next.

Maya stepped closer.

“I'm Maya.””

“I know.””

She glanced at the chair beside his bed.

“Can I sit?””

Lucas nodded.

She sat down and studied his face.

There was something familiar about him. Not just the shape of his eyes or the curve of his mouth, but the way he held his hands together when he was nervous.

She had seen the same gesture in the mirror.

Lucas looked at her for a long time.

“Do you really think we're related?””

Maya nodded.

“They say we're twins.””

He swallowed.

“Do you have any pictures of when you were little?””

Maya took out her phone and showed him a photograph of herself as a baby, wrapped in a yellow blanket.

Lucas stared at it.

“I have one like that.””

He reached into the drawer beside his bed and removed a faded photograph.

A newborn lay in a yellow blanket, a tiny hospital bracelet around his wrist.

On the back, someone had written a date.

The same date as Maya's birthday.

Maya's eyes filled.

“That's you.””

Lucas stared at the photograph.

“Why did they tell me I was adopted?””

Maya didn't know how to answer.

“Maybe they thought they were protecting you.””

“From what?””

She looked down at her hands.

“I don't know.””

Lucas turned toward the window.

“My parents said my birth mother didn't want me.””

Maya felt a sharp ache in her chest.

“That's not true.””

“How do you know?””

“Because my mom has been looking for you.””

Lucas's eyes filled.

“Then why didn't she come?””

Maya swallowed.

“Because adults make terrible decisions sometimes.””

For the first time, Lucas smiled faintly.

“That sounds like something my social worker would say.””

Maya laughed through her tears.

Then she held out her hand.

“I'm glad you're here.””

Lucas stared at her hand before taking it.

His fingers were warm.

For a few seconds, they sat in silence, holding hands like two strangers who had somehow found their way home.

Then Lucas's expression changed.

“There's something I need to tell you.””

Maya leaned closer.

“What?””

Lucas reached beneath his pillow and pulled out a folded letter.

“I found this in my adoption file. I wasn't supposed to see it, but I did.””

He handed it to her.

The letter bore Richard Hawthorne's signature.

Maya read the first paragraph.

Then she stopped.

The document stated that Lucas had been placed with his adoptive family under a confidential arrangement. It also included a payment record, a date, and a name.

*Payment authorized by Vanessa Morgan.*

Maya stared at the page.

“No.””

Lucas looked at her.

“You know her?””

“She lives with us.””

He frowned.

“Why would she pay someone to make me disappear?””

Maya couldn't answer.

Then Lucas turned the letter over.

On the back was a handwritten note.

If either twin discovers the truth before their thirteenth birthday, contact Michael Reed immediately.

Maya's stomach dropped.

“Your thirteenth birthday,” she whispered.

Lucas nodded.

“It's next week.””

Maya looked at the letter again.

Her own birthday was only weeks away.

Someone had planned their separation around the exact moment they would become old enough to uncover the truth.

The hospital door opened.

Dr. Bennett stepped inside, his expression grave.

“I'm sorry to interrupt, but there's been a development.””

Daniel and Elena appeared behind him.

“What happened?”” Daniel asked.

Dr. Bennett looked at Lucas.

“Someone has just submitted a request to transfer him to another facility.””

Sarah hurried into the room.

“The authorization came from his legal guardian.””

Lucas went pale.

“My guardian is in Switzerland.””

Dr. Bennett looked at the paperwork.

Then he lifted his eyes.

“The request was submitted by a woman named Vanessa Morgan.””

Daniel stared at the form.

Vanessa's signature was at the bottom.

And beneath it, in bold letters, was a statement that made Elena grab the edge of the bed.

*Emergency transfer approved due to suspected parental abduction.*
