Chapter 12: The Hospital Record That Never Existed
Dr. Bennett locked the consultation room door before examining the old document again.
“I'm going to be very clear,” he said.
“This record raises serious questions, but we cannot assume it proves misconduct without authenticating the source.””
Daniel paced beside the window.
“Richard Hawthorne's initials appear on a document authorizing the transfer of my newborn son to a facility that supposedly closed years before his birth.””
“I understand.””
“Then help us find the original records.””
Dr. Bennett nodded.
“I've contacted the hospital archives. They have a limited collection from the former children's annex, but accessing it will require formal authorization.””
Elena leaned forward.
“Can you request it today?””
“I can request an expedited review.””
“Please do.””
The doctor studied her.
“Mrs. Reed, I also need to ask why your own medical records may be connected to this matter.””
Elena stiffened.
“Because someone altered them.””
“Possibly. But the note suggests your treatment was coordinated through the same facility.””
Daniel stopped pacing.
“What does that mean?””
Dr. Bennett hesitated.
“Sometimes hospitals transfer patients between departments or affiliated facilities. The wording could refer to a legitimate medical consultation.””
Elena shook her head.
“I was never transferred to another hospital.””
“Then the records should establish that.””
Dr. Bennett left to contact the archives.
Maya sat beside Lucas, who had been brought into the consultation room in a wheelchair so he could participate in the discussion without tiring himself.
He looked pale but alert.
“Do you think this will tell us who my real parents are?”” he asked.
Daniel crouched beside him.
“We already know who your parents are, son.””
Lucas's expression tightened.
“I mean who took me.””
Daniel placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Yes. I think it might.””
Lucas looked at Elena.
“Did you know Richard before you got sick?””
Elena nodded.
“He was my father's attorney. I trusted him.””
“Why?””
“Because he'd been helping my family for years. He attended my wedding. He helped arrange my father's estate. I never imagined he would betray us.””
Lucas looked down.
“My adoptive mother trusted the lawyer who arranged my adoption, too.””
Elena reached for his hand.
“I'm sorry.””
He pulled away slightly, not angrily, but because he still wasn't ready to accept comfort from a woman who had been absent his entire life.
Elena respected the distance.
Maya watched her brother carefully.
She understood that finding someone didn't automatically repair what had been lost.
Sometimes the hardest part came after the reunion.
Two hours later, Dr. Bennett returned carrying a sealed archive folder.
“The records department located a partial file from the former annex,” he said.
“The original medical chart is incomplete, but several pages appear to match the dates on your documents.””
Daniel stood.
“What do they say?””
The doctor laid the papers on the table.
The first page contained a list of newborn admissions.
The second recorded a transfer request.
The third was a photocopy of a handwritten medical order.
Elena scanned the page.
Then she gripped the table.
“This isn't possible.””
Daniel moved beside her.
“What?””
She pointed to the attending physician's name.
*DR. PAUL BENNETT.*
The room went silent.
Dr. Bennett stared at the paper.
“That isn't me.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Are you sure?””
“Absolutely. I joined this hospital fifteen years ago. The document is dated six years before that.””
He examined the signature more closely.
“But I recognize the surname. My father was a physician at the old annex.””
Elena looked up.
“Your father?””
Dr. Bennett nodded slowly.
“He retired more than twenty years ago. I haven't seen his private medical papers in years.””
He turned the page.
The handwritten order stated that Infant B was to be transferred under the authority of Richard Hawthorne, pending a review of the mother's medical condition.
At the bottom, someone had written:
Do not disclose the transfer to Daniel Reed.
Daniel felt sick.
“Who wrote that?””
Dr. Bennett examined the ink.
“I can't say. But this appears to be an original carbon copy rather than a later reproduction.””
Elena closed her eyes.
“My son was deliberately removed from my care.””
“And someone wanted to keep Daniel from finding out,” Maya added.
Dr. Bennett nodded.
“That's what the document suggests.””
He continued through the folder.
A final page had been folded into the back cover. It contained a list of names, dates, and a short note about a medical consultation performed the night before Elena gave birth.
The note read:
Patient presented with symptoms inconsistent with reported diagnosis. Further testing recommended before any irreversible medical intervention.
Elena stared at the words.
“What does that mean?”” Daniel asked.
She shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Dr. Bennett studied the page.
“It could refer to a routine diagnostic concern. But if this was connected to your treatment, it deserves investigation.””
Elena's hands began to tremble.
“For six years, I believed I had a terminal illness. My doctors told me there was no effective treatment.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“You told me that.””
“I know.””
“Are you saying they were wrong?””
“I don't know.””
She looked at the document again.
“But I remember something now. Before I gave birth, Richard insisted on accompanying me to a specialist. He said the doctor had been recommended by my father.””
“Who was the doctor?”” Daniel asked.
Elena pressed her fingers to her temples.
“I can't remember his full name. I only remember the first initial.””
“What was it?””
She looked up.
“P.””
Dr. Bennett went still.
Maya noticed.
“Dr. Bennett?””
He slowly lowered the document.
“My father was named Paul Bennett.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Are you saying your father treated Elena?””
“I don't know. But I can contact him.””
Elena reached for the table.
“Is he alive?””
“Yes. He lives in a retirement community outside Chicago.””
“Then we need to speak to him.””
Dr. Bennett shook his head.
“Not without arranging it properly. My father is elderly, and these records are potentially part of a criminal investigation. I'll contact him and ask whether he remembers the case.””
Daniel agreed reluctantly.
Before they could continue, Sarah Collins appeared at the door.
“I've just received a call from the police.””
Daniel turned.
“About Vanessa?””
“About Richard Hawthorne.””
Sarah looked at Elena.
“They've located his car outside a storage facility registered under a company name connected to the trust.””
“Have they arrested him?”” Daniel asked.
“No. The car was abandoned.””
Elena closed her eyes.
“Of course.””
Sarah continued.
“They also found evidence that someone accessed the hospital's archived records last night.””
Dr. Bennett stiffened.
“Which records?””
“Those concerning the Reed twins.””
Daniel looked at the folder.
“Who accessed them?””
“The system shows a valid employee credential, but the employee says their account was compromised.””
Maya stared at the document.
“So someone knew we would come here.””
Sarah nodded.
“That's the concern.””
Lucas shifted in his chair.
“Does that mean they're coming for me again?””
Daniel knelt beside him.
“No one is taking you without going through me and the authorities.””
Lucas studied his face.
“Can you promise that?””
Daniel paused.
He had promised Maya that he would protect her. He had promised himself he would find his son. But the last twenty-four hours had shown him how easily promises could be undermined by forged documents and people he trusted.
“I can promise that I will fight for you every single time,” he said.
“And I will never stop looking for the truth.””
Lucas nodded.
That seemed to be enough for now.
That evening, Daniel drove Elena and Maya home while Sarah remained at the hospital with Lucas.
The house was dark when they arrived.
The cake was gone from the entryway table.
Daniel stopped.
“Did either of you move the cake?””
Elena shook her head.
Maya stared at the empty table.
“Maybe Uncle Michael took it.””
“Why would he take a cake?”” Daniel asked.
Maya didn't answer.
Daniel checked the security system.
The front door had been opened at 4:17 p.m. using a valid household access code.
The camera recording for that period was missing.
He checked the back entrance.
The same thing.
Someone had entered the house while they were at the hospital.
And they had known exactly how to disable the cameras.
Daniel went straight to the storage room.
The hidden panel remained open.
The metal box was still there, but the flash drive was gone.
So was the letter addressed to Maya.
Elena searched the surrounding shelves.
“They took the evidence.””
Daniel checked the rest of the room.
Nothing else appeared disturbed.
Then Maya noticed a small white envelope tucked beneath the edge of the wooden panel.
“Dad?””
He turned.
She pulled the envelope free.
Her name was written across the front.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed a woman lying in a hospital bed, her face pale and her eyes closed.
Elena made a strangled sound.
It was a photograph of herself, taken on the night she gave birth.
On the back, someone had written:
You were never sick enough to die. Ask Dr. Bennett what they gave you.
Daniel read the message twice.
Elena gripped the edge of the shelf.
“They told me I was dying.””
Maya looked at her mother.
“What if they made you sick?””
Elena stared at the photograph.
“I don't know.””
Daniel reached for his phone.
He called Dr. Bennett and explained what they had found.
The doctor went silent.
Then he said, “I need to speak to my father immediately.””
“Why?””
“My father was the only physician at the old annex who had access to experimental treatments. If someone administered a drug that wasn't part of Elena's approved care, he may know what it was.””
Elena's voice shook.
“Can he tell us whether I was deliberately poisoned?””
“I can't promise that. But he may be able to identify the medication.””
Daniel ended the call.
For a moment, the three of them stood in the dim room, surrounded by boxes that had concealed their family's secrets for six years.
Then Maya looked at the photograph again.
There was something in the background she hadn't noticed before.
A second hospital bed.
And beside it, a nurse holding a newborn.
The baby's face was hidden by a blanket, but the wristband was visible.
Maya moved closer.
The number printed on it was unmistakable.
*214.*
Beneath the number was a name.
Not Noah.
Not Lucas.
A different name entirely.
*ETHAN MORGAN.*
Maya stared at the photograph.
Ethan was Vanessa's son.
The boy who had gone to Hawaii without her.
The boy who had lived in their house for three years.
And according to the photograph, he had been in the same hospital on the night Maya and Lucas were born.
Elena slowly sank onto a box.
“No,” she whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
“What does this mean?””
Elena lifted her eyes, horror spreading across her face.
“I think Vanessa's son may be connected to the same secret.””
Outside, a car door slammed.
Daniel moved to the window.
A dark sedan sat across the street with its headlights off.
Someone was watching the house.
Then Daniel's phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
It contained a single photograph of Lucas sleeping in his hospital bed.
May you like
Beneath it were seven words.
*You found one child. Don't look for the other.*
