Chapter 6: The Secret Beneath the Floorboards
“Michael.””
Elena said the name so quietly that Daniel almost missed it.
He stared at her.
“My brother just threatened my daughter?””
Elena shook her head, tears slipping down her cheeks.
“I don't know whether it was Michael. The voice sounded like him, but he could have been using someone else's phone.””
“Don't protect him.””
“I'm not protecting anyone.””
“You disappeared for six years, Elena. You let me bury you. You let me raise our daughter believing she would never see you again. Now you walk into my house and tell me my brother helped steal her inheritance.””
Daniel's voice rose.
“And when I ask you who is threatening us, you tell me you're not sure?””
Elena flinched.
Marcus stepped between them.
“Daniel, we need to slow down. Whoever made that call knows Elena is here. That means we have a security problem.””
Daniel turned toward him.
“Then call the police.””
“Not yet.””
“Why not?””
“Because we don't know how much information Richard has already given them. If he has forged documents, he may have made it look as though Elena participated in the fraud.””
Elena nodded.
“He could have made me look like the person who stole the money.””
Daniel looked at the documents on the table.
“You have evidence.””
“Copies,” Elena replied.
“The originals are somewhere else.””
“Where?””
She hesitated.
“Somewhere Richard would never think to look.””
Daniel's patience was wearing thin.
“Where, Elena?””
She looked toward Maya.
“In this house.””
Everyone went still.
Vanessa took a step backward.
“No.””
Elena turned to her.
“You know where it is.””
Vanessa shook her head violently.
“You told me you destroyed everything!””
“I told you I destroyed the copies Richard knew about.””
“You said there was nothing left!””
“There wasn't. Until I remembered what my father told me.””
Daniel stared at his wife.
“Why does Vanessa know anything about this?””
Elena drew a shaky breath.
“Because I contacted her shortly before I disappeared. I needed someone inside the house who could keep an eye on Maya without attracting attention.””
Daniel's face darkened.
“You recruited my future wife before you died?””
“I didn't know she would become your wife.””
Vanessa laughed, but the sound was brittle.
“You certainly made a mess of things.””
Elena ignored her.
“My father used to hide important documents in unusual places. He believed that the safest place for something valuable was somewhere ordinary people would never think to look.””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Where in this house?””
Elena glanced toward the living room.
“The old music room.””
Daniel frowned.
“We don't have a music room.””
“We did when we first moved in.””
He remembered.
Before Maya started school, they had kept a piano in the small room beside the kitchen. After Elena's funeral, he had turned it into a storage room. Boxes of old toys, winter coats, and holiday decorations had been stacked there for years.
The piano had been moved to the garage.
Daniel looked at Elena.
“What did you hide?””
“The original trust agreement. My father's handwritten instructions. The medical records proving someone altered my medication. And a letter identifying the person who paid the attorney to falsify my death certificate.””
Marcus exhaled.
“If those documents still exist, they could establish the entire chain of fraud.””
“Exactly,” Elena said.
Daniel turned toward the kitchen.
“Then we're going to find them.””
Maya started down the stairs.
“I want to help.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Sweetheart, this could be dangerous.””
“So could letting everyone keep secrets from me.””
The words stopped him.
Maya stood with her chin lifted, her eyes red from crying.
“I know I'm twelve. I know you want to protect me. But this is about Mom, and it's about my money, and it's about why she left me. I don't want everyone talking around me like I'm not here.””
Daniel looked at Elena.
His wife nodded slowly.
“She deserves the truth.””
Daniel crouched in front of Maya.
“Then you'll stay beside me the entire time. If I tell you to leave, you leave. No arguing.””
Maya nodded.
“Okay.””
They moved into the small room beside the kitchen.
Dust coated the shelves. Old cardboard boxes filled the corners, and a faded Christmas wreath leaned against a broken lamp. The air smelled of cedar, paper, and the faint mustiness of things left untouched for years.
Daniel switched on the ceiling light.
“Where exactly?”” he asked.
Elena walked toward the far wall.
“There used to be a narrow cabinet here.””
Daniel pointed toward a stack of boxes.
“That one?””
“No. Behind it.””
Marcus helped move the boxes. Maya dragged a plastic container out of the way, revealing a section of wooden paneling that looked slightly different from the rest.
Elena knelt.
“My father showed me how to open it when I was a child.””
She pressed a small knot in the wood.
Nothing happened.
She tried again, then ran her fingers along the panel's lower edge.
A soft click sounded.
The panel shifted outward by half an inch.
Daniel crouched beside her.
Behind it was a narrow cavity, barely wide enough to hold a small metal box.
Elena reached inside.
Her fingers brushed something.
Then she froze.
“What is it?”” Daniel asked.
She slowly withdrew her hand.
A folded piece of paper rested in her palm.
The paper was old and yellowed, its edges softened by time.
Elena unfolded it.
Her face went white.
“What?”” Daniel demanded.
She handed it to him.
The note was written in her father's handwriting.
Elena, if you are reading this, it means someone has discovered the trust. Do not trust Richard Hawthorne. Do not trust Michael. And under no circumstances should you trust the person Daniel marries after you.
Daniel stared at the final sentence.
Maya looked from the paper to Vanessa.
Vanessa had followed them into the room.
“That's absurd,” she said.
Daniel slowly turned toward her.
“You knew about this note?””
“No.””
“Then why do you look terrified?””
“Because you're all treating a piece of paper as proof of something.””
Elena reached into the cavity again.
This time, she pulled out a small metal box.
It was locked.
Daniel examined the latch.
“Do you have a key?””
Elena shook her head.
“My father never gave me one.””
Marcus took a small tool from his briefcase and worked carefully at the latch. After several minutes, it opened with a sharp click.
Inside lay a thick envelope, a small flash drive, and a photograph wrapped in tissue paper.
Daniel lifted the envelope.
His name was written across the front.
He opened it and began reading.
The letter explained that Elena's father had suspected a coordinated attempt to seize the trust. He had instructed an independent trustee to protect Maya's inheritance until she reached adulthood.
But one paragraph made Daniel's hands go cold.
If my granddaughter is ever placed under the guardianship of a person who has a financial interest in the trust, the trustee must immediately suspend all disbursements and investigate.
Daniel looked up.
“Who was named as Maya's guardian if something happened to both of us?””
Elena closed her eyes.
“I was.””
“And if you died?””
She swallowed.
“Michael.””
Daniel stared at the letter.
His brother had stood to inherit control over Maya's trust if both parents were dead.
And Vanessa had married Daniel less than a year after Elena's disappearance.
He looked at her.
“Were you aware of this arrangement?””
Vanessa's face was drained of color.
“No.””
“Did you know Michael?””
She hesitated.
“I met him twice.””
“When?””
“The first time was at our wedding. The second time was at a charity dinner.””
“Did you speak to him privately?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Daniel's voice hardened.
“Did you?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before we married.””
The room went silent.
Daniel slowly set the letter down.
“What did he tell you?””
Vanessa wrapped her arms around herself.
“He said you were wealthy, but that your brother controlled more of the business than you realized. He said you had enemies who might try to take everything from you.””
“And you believed him?””
“I thought he was warning me.””
“What else?””
Vanessa looked toward the door.
“He said that if I ever needed help, I should contact Richard Hawthorne.””
Elena covered her mouth.
Marcus muttered a curse.
Daniel felt a coldness spread through his chest.
“Did Michael introduce you to Richard?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Before our wedding.””
“And after?””
“He called me a few times. He asked how Maya was doing. He wanted to know whether you had changed the guardianship documents.””
Daniel took a step toward her.
“Did you tell him?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't know what he was planning.””
“Did you tell him?””
“Yes.””
The admission landed like a stone.
Daniel looked away.
For three years, he had trusted Vanessa with his daughter, his home, and his life.
Now he could no longer tell which moments had been genuine.
Elena reached into the metal box and lifted the photograph.
It showed a young Vanessa standing beside Michael outside a hotel.
The date was printed on the back.
Three weeks before Daniel and Vanessa had met.
Vanessa stared at the image.
“I've never seen that photograph.””
Elena turned it over.
A handwritten note appeared beneath the date.
The replacement is in place. The child remains the key.
Maya stepped closer.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Then the flash drive slipped from Daniel's hand and struck the wooden floor.
It rolled beneath a stack of old boxes.
Maya knelt to retrieve it.
As she reached into the narrow space, her fingers brushed another object.
A second envelope.
Unlike the first, this one was addressed to her.
*For Maya. To be opened on her thirteenth birthday, or if Elena's disappearance is ever questioned.*
Maya pulled it free.
Her mother's handwriting covered the front.
She looked up at Elena.
“You wrote this?””
Elena nodded, tears shining in her eyes.
“I wrote it the night before I disappeared.””
Maya held the envelope against her chest.
“Why didn't you send it to me?””
Elena's voice broke.
“Because I was afraid it would put you in danger.””
Daniel reached for the envelope, but Maya held on tightly.
“It's mine.””
He stopped.
She looked at her mother.
“Can I open it?””
Elena hesitated.
Then she nodded.
Maya carefully broke the seal.
Inside was a single sheet of paper and a small photograph of Maya as a baby, sleeping in her mother's arms.
She unfolded the letter.
The first line read:
My darling Maya, if you are reading this, then the people I trusted have failed to keep you safe.
Maya's eyes blurred.
She read the next sentence aloud.
There is something about your birth that your father has never been told.
Daniel went completely still.
Elena closed her eyes.
Vanessa stumbled backward.
And from the hallway came the sound of the front door unlocking.
A man's voice called out cheerfully.
“Daniel? I'm home.””
Marcus turned toward the doorway.
He recognized that voice.
So did Daniel.
It was Michael Reed's voice.
May you like
Daniel's brother had just walked into the house.
And he was carrying a birthday cake for Maya.
