Chapter 7: The Birthday Cake and the Lie
“Daniel? I'm home.””
Michael Reed's cheerful voice drifted down the hallway.
Maya clutched her mother's letter against her chest. The words about her birth seemed to burn through the paper.
Daniel stepped out of the storage room, positioning himself between his brother and the doorway.
Michael appeared carrying a white bakery box tied with a blue ribbon. He wore an expensive gray coat, polished shoes, and the easy smile of a man who had never expected to be unwelcome anywhere.
His gaze landed on Elena.
The smile vanished.
For one extraordinary second, the house fell silent.
Then Michael lowered the cake box onto the entryway table.
“Well,” he said.
“This is unexpected.””
Elena stood behind Daniel, her face pale.
“You knew I was alive.””
Michael adjusted his cuffs.
“I suspected.””
“You attended my funeral.””
“I attended Daniel's funeral for his marriage, too, if we're being precise. He was devastated.””
Daniel took a step forward.
“Don't you dare talk about my grief.””
Michael looked at his brother with practiced sympathy.
“Daniel, I understand you're upset. But you need to be careful. Elena has been missing for six years. She appears without warning, makes accusations, and suddenly everyone is supposed to believe her.””
“She didn't appear without warning,” Vanessa said from the storage room doorway.
“You called her.””
Michael's eyes snapped toward her.
Vanessa immediately regretted speaking. Maya saw it in the way she pressed her lips together and stepped behind Marcus.
Michael slowly smiled.
“Vanessa. Still confusing gossip with evidence?””
“I'm not the one who forged documents.””
“Really?”” Michael asked.
“Then why is your name on a company registered in Switzerland?””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“You know about the company?””
“Of course. I know quite a lot about the company.””
Michael removed his gloves.
“And before anyone starts shouting, I'd like to point out that I brought a cake for Maya's birthday. I thought we could celebrate like a normal family.””
Maya stared at him.
“My birthday isn't until next month.””
Michael paused.
It was a tiny mistake, barely a second long.
But everyone noticed.
He recovered with a laugh.
“Of course. I meant an early celebration.””
“You bought a cake with my name on it?”” Maya asked.
Michael glanced at the box.
“Your father told me you liked chocolate.””
“He didn't tell you that.””
Daniel's voice was flat.
“I haven't spoken to Michael in three weeks.””
Michael's smile faltered.
Then he opened the cake box himself.
Inside sat a chocolate cake decorated with white frosting and a message in blue icing.
*HAPPY 13TH BIRTHDAY, MAYA.*
Maya felt the room tilt.
She was twelve.
Her thirteenth birthday was still weeks away.
And the letter in her hand had been addressed to be opened on that exact birthday.
Michael looked at her.
“Something wrong, sweetheart?””
Maya backed away.
“How did you know?””
“Know what?””
“About my thirteenth birthday.””
Michael's expression hardened for the briefest moment.
Then he laughed.
“Everyone knows when a child turns thirteen.””
“But you brought the cake today.””
He looked at Daniel.
“She's clearly been frightened by everything that's happened. Perhaps we should give her some space.””
“No,” Maya whispered.
Michael turned back to her.
“What was that?””
“You don't get to tell me what to do.””
Daniel placed a hand on her shoulder.
“That's enough, Michael. Sit down.””
Michael sighed theatrically and walked into the living room.
“Fine. Let's discuss the accusations.””
He sat in Daniel's favorite armchair, crossed one leg over the other, and looked around at the scattered papers.
His gaze stopped on the metal box.
For the first time, his composure cracked.
“Where did you find that?””
Daniel picked up the box.
“You tell me.””
Michael rose.
“That box belongs to Elena's father.””
“And now it belongs to my daughter.””
Michael's eyes narrowed.
“Your daughter has no idea what she's holding.””
Elena stepped forward.
“She knows enough to understand that you and Richard tried to steal her inheritance.””
Michael laughed.
“That's an impressive accusation from a woman who faked her own death.””
“I didn't fake anything. Richard arranged it.””
“And you expect us to believe that?””
“Your signature is on the trust transfer.””
Michael's face went still.
Daniel reached into the folder and held up the photograph of Michael standing outside the Zurich bank.
“Care to explain this?””
Michael barely glanced at it.
“I met Richard there on business.””
“What business?””
“Private investments.””
“Using my daughter's trust?””
Michael sighed.
“Daniel, you've always been too sentimental. You think money is something you earn, save, and hand to your child when she grows up. But money is a tool. It has to be managed.””
“Four hundred thousand dollars disappeared from my company.””
“Your company has been bleeding money for years.””
“Not like this.””
“Because you've been too busy playing the grieving father to notice what's happening around you.””
Daniel lunged forward.
Marcus caught his arm.
“Don't,” Marcus warned.
Michael straightened his coat.
“There it is. The temper. Elena used to say that was your worst quality.””
Elena's eyes flashed.
“Don't use my words.””
Michael looked at her.
“You were always the clever one, Elena. You found the trust, uncovered the transfers, and decided to play detective. But you made one mistake.””
“What was that?””
“You thought you could protect Maya by disappearing.””
He turned toward the staircase.
“You left her here with us.””
Maya felt Daniel's hand tighten on her shoulder.
Michael smiled sadly.
“Do you know what happened after you left, Elena? Daniel worked himself into the ground. He barely slept. He missed school meetings, birthdays, and everything else because he was trying to keep this family together.””
Elena's face crumpled.
Michael leaned forward.
“And Vanessa stepped in. She gave him a home. She raised Maya when you couldn't.””
Vanessa stared at him in disbelief.
“Don't pretend you care about Maya.””
“I care about the family.””
“No,” Vanessa snapped.
“You care about the money.””
Michael's smile disappeared.
“Be careful.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“That's what you told me when you first approached me. You said Daniel's marriage was built on lies. You said Elena was dangerous. You promised me that if I helped you, I'd never have to worry about money again.””
Daniel slowly turned toward Vanessa.
“You helped him?””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“I thought I was helping protect you.””
“By transferring money out of my company?””
“I didn't know how much he was taking!””
Michael stood abruptly.
“Enough.””
Marcus stepped between him and Vanessa.
“Sit down.””
Michael looked at him with contempt.
“You have no idea what you're involved in.””
“Then explain it.””
Michael reached into his coat and pulled out a folded document.
“I don't need to explain anything. The trust was legally transferred to me as the designated guardian after Elena's death. Every transaction was authorized.””
Elena shook her head.
“Only if both parents were dead or legally incapacitated.””
Michael smiled.
“Exactly.””
Daniel stared at the document.
Then he noticed the date.
The trust transfer had been approved six years earlier, just two days after Elena's funeral.
His brother had gained control of Maya's inheritance before the flowers on Elena's grave had even wilted.
Maya looked at Michael.
“Did you know my mom was alive?””
Michael's eyes softened into an expression that might have fooled someone who didn't know him.
“Sweetheart, I was trying to protect you.””
“Then why did you tell everyone she was dead?””
“Because sometimes adults have to make difficult decisions.””
Maya held up her mother's letter.
“Why did you buy me a birthday cake?””
Michael stared at the envelope.
His expression changed.
Daniel saw it.
So did Marcus.
Michael's voice became quiet.
“Where did you get that?””
Maya stepped backward.
“It's mine.””
“Give it to me.””
“No.””
Michael moved toward her.
Daniel blocked his path.
“Take another step, and you'll leave this house in handcuffs.””
Michael stopped.
For a moment, hatred flickered across his face.
Then he laughed.
“You really don't know, do you?””
Daniel said nothing.
Michael pointed at the letter.
“Ask Elena what happened the night Maya was born. Ask her why the hospital records don't match the birth certificate. Ask her why your daughter was never supposed to inherit that trust.””
Elena went rigid.
Daniel turned toward his first wife.
“What is he talking about?””
Elena's lips trembled.
Michael smiled.
“Go on, Elena. Tell him.””
Elena looked at Maya.
Then at Daniel.
May you like
And finally, she whispered the words that made the entire room go silent.
“Maya wasn't the only baby born that night.””
