Chapter 13: The Third Child
Daniel read the message again.
You found one child. Don't look for the other.
Across the street, the dark sedan remained motionless.
He grabbed his phone and photographed the license plate through the window. The image came out blurred, but the vehicle's make and color were clear.
“Mom?”” Maya whispered.
Daniel turned.
She was still holding the photograph of the newborns. Her face had gone pale, and Elena stood beside her as though the floor beneath them had begun to tilt.
“Ethan was born the same night as us,” Maya said.
“How is that possible?””
Elena shook her head.
“I don't know.””
“But you said you had twins.””
“I did.””
“Then why was Ethan there?””
Daniel pulled the curtains closed.
“We're going to find out. But first, nobody leaves this house alone.””
He called the police and reported the threatening message. Then he contacted Rebecca Shaw, who instructed him to preserve the original photograph and avoid confronting Vanessa or Michael if either contacted them.
When he finished, Elena was staring at the baby's wristband.
“Ethan Morgan,” she whispered.
“That was Vanessa's maiden name.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Vanessa's name was Morgan before we married. Ethan was already using it when he came to live with us.””
“Which means the photograph could have been taken after Vanessa's son was born.””
“No,” Maya interrupted.
“Look at the date.””
She pointed to the lower corner of the photograph. A timestamp had been printed onto the original image.
It matched the date of Maya and Lucas's birth.
Daniel took the photograph carefully.
There was something else in the background: a wall clock, a numbered bed, and a nurse's name badge.
He enlarged the image on his phone.
The badge read *C. WELLS*.
“Does that name mean anything to you?”” he asked Elena.
She stared at it for several seconds.
Then her expression changed.
“Clara Wells.””
“Who is she?””
“She was the nurse who cared for me during the final week of my pregnancy. She disappeared shortly after I was told my son had died.””
Daniel felt the pieces moving together, but not yet forming a picture.
“Could she have been involved in the transfer?””
Elena nodded slowly.
“She could have known what happened to Lucas.””
“And Ethan?””
“I don't know.””
Maya sat on the edge of a chair.
“Maybe Ethan was adopted, too.””
Daniel thought about the years Ethan had lived under his roof. Vanessa had always insisted that her son needed extra protection. She had been unusually possessive of his medical records, refusing to let Daniel attend certain appointments.
At the time, he had thought she was simply being a protective mother.
Now every memory felt contaminated.
“I need to speak to Ethan,” he said.
Elena caught his arm.
“Not until we know whether Vanessa has told him anything. If she believes we're close to the truth, she might use him against us.””
“He's a child.””
“So is Lucas. And someone has already used him as leverage.””
Daniel looked toward Maya.
She was staring at the floor.
“Dad,” she said quietly, “when Ethan and I first met, he told me something strange.””
Daniel crouched beside her.
“What did he say?””
“He said his mother told him never to ask about his birth. He thought it was because his father had left them.””
Elena's eyes widened.
“Vanessa told him that?””
Maya nodded.
“She also said that if he ever found out who his biological father was, it would destroy our family.””
Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.
“Did he say anything else?””
Maya hesitated.
“He said he had a scar on his shoulder from when he was a baby. He didn't know how he got it. Vanessa told him it was from an operation.””
Elena closed her eyes.
The photograph had shown the newborn's left shoulder partly exposed. Near the collarbone was a faint, crescent-shaped mark.
“Lucas has a scar like that,” she whispered.
Daniel stared at her.
“What?””
Elena opened her eyes.
“I noticed it at the hospital. A small crescent near his left shoulder. I thought it was a birthmark.””
Maya stood abruptly.
“Then Ethan and Lucas could be connected.””
“Possibly,” Daniel said.
“But we need proof.””
His phone rang.
Rebecca.
He answered immediately.
“I received the photograph,” she said.
“I've also contacted the hospital's records department. There is a major discrepancy in the original birth registry.””
“What kind of discrepancy?””
“Three infants were recorded as delivered in the same maternity ward within a forty-minute window. Two were registered under Elena's name. The third was registered under an emergency admission code, with the mother's identity sealed.””
Elena gripped the table.
“Three babies?””
“That's what the registry indicates,” Rebecca replied.
“However, the third infant's record was later removed from the official index.””
Daniel paced across the room.
“Who authorized the removal?””
Rebecca paused.
“The approval bears the signature of Richard Hawthorne and the attending physician.””
“Dr. Bennett's father?””
“The name is consistent with the old medical records. But there's another issue. The third infant's birth certificate was never formally canceled. It was transferred to a sealed archive under a different surname.””
“What surname?””
Rebecca lowered her voice.
“Morgan.””
Nobody moved.
Maya whispered, “Ethan.””
“Possibly,” Rebecca said.
“But we can't conclude that yet. I'm requesting the full file through the proper legal channels.””
Daniel stared at the photograph.
Three babies.
Two recorded under Elena's name.
One hidden under the Morgan name.
If Ethan was the third child, Vanessa's entire life with Daniel might have been built around a secret that began on the night his children were born.
But one question remained.
Why would she need to keep Ethan close to Maya if he had no connection to the trust?
Elena seemed to be thinking the same thing.
“My father didn't just leave money to the twins,” she said.
“He left something else.””
Daniel turned.
“What?””
“A clause that required both children to reach thirteen before the trust could be distributed. If either child died or disappeared, the trustee would be permitted to suspend payment until the surviving beneficiary's identity was verified.””
Maya's face tightened.
“So somebody needed us both to disappear?””
“Or needed to make it appear that one of you had died,” Elena replied.
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
“And if a third child was substituted into the records…”
Elena nodded.
“The trust could have been manipulated from the beginning.””
A sudden pounding sounded at the front door.
Everyone froze.
A woman's voice called from outside.
“Daniel! Please, open the door!””
It was Vanessa.
Daniel looked through the peephole.
She stood on the porch alone, disheveled and trembling. Her coat was torn at the sleeve, and a thin line of blood ran from her temple.
Daniel opened the door but kept the chain engaged.
“What do you want?””
Vanessa looked past him.
“Please. I need to speak to Elena.””
Elena appeared behind Daniel.
The moment Vanessa saw her, she began to cry.
“I didn't know,” she whispered.
Elena's face hardened.
“Didn't know what?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I swear to you, I didn't know what Richard had done to the babies. I thought Ethan was mine.””
Daniel's voice was ice.
“You thought?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“He told me Ethan had been abandoned. He said his mother had died and that the biological father was dangerous. He gave me the adoption papers, the birth certificate, everything.””
“Who is Ethan's biological mother?”” Elena demanded.
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Then she looked over her shoulder toward the street.
A car engine roared.
Her face turned white.
“He found me.””
Daniel unlatched the door and pulled her inside just as a black vehicle sped past the house.
Vanessa collapsed against the wall.
“Richard knows you've found the photograph,” she whispered.
“He knows you're looking for the third child.””
Daniel seized her arm.
“Who is Ethan's biological father?””
Vanessa stared at him.
Then she said the words that shattered the room.
“Michael Reed.””
Daniel released her.
His own brother.
The man who had helped steal Lucas from Elena.
The man who had brought a birthday cake into their home.
The man who had vanished with Vanessa.
Maya looked at Vanessa with tears in her eyes.
“Then Ethan is my cousin?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
She looked directly at Elena.
“Ethan is your son.””
For one terrible second, nobody spoke.
Then Elena whispered, “That's impossible.””
Vanessa reached into her coat and pulled out a folded document.
“Richard told me the third baby was yours. He said he had to move him because your father had arranged a secret medical procedure, and the child wouldn't survive if he remained in your care.””
Elena took the document with shaking hands.
It was a birth record.
The mother's name had been altered, but the original entry was still faintly visible beneath the correction.
*ELENA REED.*
The father's name was blank.
At the bottom was a note in Richard's handwriting.
The third child must remain with Vanessa Morgan until all three children reach thirteen. No exceptions.
Daniel stared at the page.
“All three?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Lucas turns thirteen next week. Maya turns thirteen soon after. Ethan is already thirteen.””
Elena looked up sharply.
“What do you mean, Ethan is already thirteen?””
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“Because I changed his birthday.””
Maya stepped back.
“You lied about his age?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Richard told me that if Ethan's real age became known, the trust would be triggered. I was supposed to keep him hidden until the other two children reached the required age.””
Daniel felt the room spin.
The children had never been randomly caught in a financial conspiracy.
They had been placed in the center of it from birth.
Vanessa looked at Elena.
“There's one more thing you need to know.””
She unfolded the final page.
It was a medical authorization signed on the night the twins were born.
The procedure had been approved by a doctor whose name was familiar to everyone in the room.
*PAUL BENNETT.*
Under the doctor's signature was a final handwritten instruction.
If the mother survives, tell her only two children were born.
Elena stared at the words.
Then she lifted her eyes to Vanessa.
“What did they do to me?””
Vanessa began to cry.
“I don't know.””

Outside, another engine slowed beside the house.
And this time, the headlights stopped directly in front of the door.
