Chapter 10: The Person Behind the Perfect Day
The person standing across from me had spent years being part of my life.
That was the part my mind couldn’t accept.
Not the betrayal.
Not the secrets.
Not even the lies.
The familiarity.
The way they smiled at me.
The way they had shaken my hand.
The way they had looked me in the eyes and wished me happiness.
All while knowing this moment was coming.
“Say it again.””
My voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
The person tilted their head.
“Say what?””
“The part where you said you’re the reason my wedding almost happened.””
A small smile appeared.
“I’m the reason it was going to happen today.””
The ballroom felt colder.
I looked at Simone.
She was crying.
Not because she had been exposed.
Because she was watching everything she feared come true.
I looked back at the person.
“Why?””
They walked farther into the room.
Slowly.
Confidently.
Like they owned the floor beneath them.
“Because you were never supposed to know.””
My mother stepped forward.
“Enough.””
The person looked at her.
“Still protecting him?””
My mother’s face hardened.
“I protected him from you.””
The words hit me.
I turned toward her.
“You knew?””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
A thousand questions rushed through my head.
But one came first.
“How long?””
My mother looked at the floor.
“Years.””
I felt something break inside me.
Years.
Not days.
Not weeks.
Years.
“You knew this person was involved?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
Her eyes filled.
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“What?””
The person laughed softly.
“There it is.””
They looked around.
“The truth finally comes out.””
I stepped toward them.
“Who are you?””
They smiled.
“You know exactly who I am.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t.””
Their expression changed.
Only slightly.
Then they said:
“I was your father’s closest advisor.””
My stomach dropped.
The name came back instantly.
Someone I had heard since childhood.
Someone who attended every family event.
Someone my father trusted.
“Calvin.””
The smile disappeared.
Just for a second.
Then returned.
“Yes.””
My mother whispered:
“Darius, don’t listen to him.””
Calvin looked at her.
“You’re still pretending?””
“What are you talking about?””
He laughed.
“Loretta, you spent years telling him I was the villain.””
My mother’s face changed.
“Because you were.””
Calvin shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Your mother and I both made choices.””
I looked between them.
“What choices?””
Nobody answered.
I stepped closer.
“What choices?””
Calvin reached into his coat.
My body tensed.
But he pulled out a folder.
Not a weapon.
Documents.
Again.
Always documents.
He tossed them onto the nearest table.
“Read them.””
I didn’t move.
“Why?””
“Because everyone here has given you their version of the truth.””
He looked around.
“Now you get mine.””
I stared at the folder.
“I don’t believe you.””
“You don’t have to.””
He smiled.
“You just have to read.””
Simone moved beside me.
“Darius, don’t do it alone.””
I looked at her.
After everything.
She was still there.
Still choosing to stand beside me.
I didn’t know if that meant anything.
But I noticed.
I opened the folder.
The first page was a financial report.
The second was a contract.
The third was a letter.
My father’s handwriting.
My heart stopped.
I read the first line.
*If you are reading this, Calvin has already convinced you that everyone else is lying.*
I looked up.
Calvin’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Fear.
I continued.
*The truth is more complicated than betrayal.*
The words felt familiar.
Like my father was still trying to guide me.
The next sentence made my fingers shake.
*I trusted the wrong person because I believed they wanted power. I was wrong.*
I looked at Calvin.
He said nothing.
I kept reading.
*They wanted control because they were afraid of what would happen if the truth came out.*
A sound escaped my mother.
A broken breath.
“What does it say?”” she asked.
I looked at her.
“It doesn’t say.””
The room waited.
I turned the page.
Then stopped.
Because the next section was hidden.
Covered.
Not erased.
Blackened.
Someone had physically removed the words.
Calvin noticed.
And smiled.
“You see?””
I looked at him.
“See what?””
“That even your father didn’t trust you with everything.””
My jaw tightened.
“No.””
I closed the folder.
“That’s not what it means.””
His smile faded.
“Isn’t it?””
I looked around the room.
At my mother.
At Simone.
At Renee.
At everyone who had hidden pieces of my life.
Then I looked back at Calvin.
“You wanted me to find this today.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His answer came immediately.
“Because today was the only day everyone would be in one place.””
A chill moved through me.
The wedding.
The guests.
The family.
The perfect trap.
This wasn’t an interruption.
It was planned.
I looked at Simone.
“You knew?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
But Calvin answered.
“She knew enough.””
Simone looked at him.
“Stop.””
“You knew the wedding would expose everything.””
“No.””
“You recorded the message.””
“Because I was trying to warn him!””
The room went silent.
I looked at her.
“Warn me from what?””
She looked at Calvin.
Then at me.
“From the person who made sure you never looked closely at your own family.””
Calvin smiled.
May you like
And pulled out his phone.
“I think it’s time Darius hears the second recording.””
