Chapter 12: The Brother Nobody Knew Existed

Nobody spoke.

The document sat on the table between us.

A simple piece of paper.

A few lines.

A name.

And somehow, it felt heavier than everything else.

I stared at it.

Then looked at Calvin.

“No.””

He didn’t react.

“You heard me.””

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“That’s impossible.””

My father had one child.

Me.

That was what I knew.

That was what everyone knew.

My mother looked like she was about to collapse.

And that scared me.

Because she wasn’t shocked.

She was remembering.

“Mom.””

She looked at me.

I already knew the answer.

But I needed to hear it.

“Is this real?””

The silence lasted too long.

Then she whispered:

“Yes.””

The word broke something inside me.

I stepped back.

My mother cried.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I laughed.

Again.

That empty laugh.

“You don’t know?””

“I was afraid.””

“Everyone is always afraid.””

My voice cracked.

“Everyone is always afraid, and somehow I’m always the last person to know.””

Simone moved closer.

“Darius…”

I looked at her.

“Did you know?””

She hesitated.

That was enough.

My chest tightened.

“You knew.””

“I knew there was someone.””

“Someone?””

She looked down.

“Your father’s other child.””

The ballroom felt unreal.

My wedding.

My family.

My entire history.

Everything was changing.

“Who is it?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Calvin.

“You know.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

He looked toward the entrance.

The doors were still open.

Then he said:

“He’s here.””

My heart stopped.

Everyone turned.

Slow footsteps echoed across the ballroom.

A man appeared.

Older than me.

But not by much.

Same height.

Same eyes.

Same expression.

My father’s eyes.

I couldn’t move.

The man stopped several feet away.

He looked at me.

Not angry.

Not happy.

Just tired.

“Darius.””

Hearing my name from him felt strange.

Like hearing my father’s voice from a stranger.

I swallowed.

“Who are you?””

The man looked down.

Then back at me.

“My name is Elijah.””

A pause.

“I’m your brother.””

Nobody spoke.

Not even Calvin.

I stared at him.

“You knew about me?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Since I was sixteen.””

My stomach turned.

Years.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

“Why didn’t you come to me?””

His eyes moved toward my mother.

Then Calvin.

“Because they made sure I couldn’t.””

My mother whispered:

“Elijah…”

He looked at her.

And there was pain between them.

Not hatred.

Pain.

“You told him I was dangerous.””

My mother started crying.

“Because I was scared.””

“Of me?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Of what the truth would do to him.””

I looked at Elijah.

“Who is your mother?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Her name was Vanessa.””

The name meant nothing.

Until I saw my mother’s reaction.

She looked like she had been punched.

I turned.

“You know that name.””

My mother sat down slowly.

“Yes.””

“Who was she?””

No one answered.

Elijah did.

“She was the woman your father loved before he met your mother.””

The room went silent.

I looked at my mother.

My entire childhood.

My entire family.

Everything.

Suddenly had another version.

Calvin stepped forward.

“And now you understand.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

He smiled.

“You don’t?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at Elijah.

Then Simone.

Then my mother.

“The truth isn’t that everyone betrayed me.””

Nobody moved.

“The truth is that everyone was hiding different pieces.””

My eyes landed on Calvin.

“And you were the only one trying to control the whole story.””

For the first time, his expression changed.

Fear.

Just for a second.

Then the ballroom doors slammed shut.

The lights went out.

And when they came back on…

Elijah was gone.

Along with the birth certificate.

May you like

And the only person who knew where he went…

was Calvin.
