Chapter 8: The Night My Father Disappeared

I had spent years believing I knew how my father died.

A hospital room.

A failing heart.

A final goodbye.

That was the story.

The only story.

My mother told it so many times that it became part of our family history.

But now, standing in a wedding ballroom with my entire life unraveling, I realized something terrifying.

A story can be repeated for years…

and still be a lie.

“Mom.””

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

She looked at me.

Her tears were falling silently now.

“Darius…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t say my name like that.””

She flinched.

“Tell me the truth.””

The guests watched.

The family watched.

Simone watched.

But this time, I didn’t care.

I needed the answer.

“What happened the night Dad died?””

My mother looked down.

For a moment, I thought she wouldn’t answer.

Then she whispered:

“He didn’t know he was dying.””

The words confused me.

“What?””

“He thought he was going to a meeting.””

My heart started racing.

“What meeting?””

She looked at Renee.

Renee looked away.

That told me enough.

“There was a problem with the company,” my mother said.

“The money Marcus was investigating.””

I frowned.

“Wait.””

I looked between them.

“You’re saying Dad knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Because your father asked us not to.””

The room went silent.

My anger shifted.

“Asked you not to?””

She nodded.

“He said if something happened to him, you were not supposed to be pulled into it.””

I laughed bitterly.

“And what? You all just decided to follow that forever?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I decided.””

That hurt.

More than I expected.

My mother stepped closer.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“By lying?””

“Yes.””

The honesty stunned me.

She didn’t defend herself.

She didn’t pretend.

“I made a choice I thought was right.””

“And was it?””

She looked at me.

“I don’t know anymore.””

That was the first answer all day that sounded real.

I looked at Simone.

She was crying quietly.

“What did you know?””

She wiped her face.

“Not everything.””

“Enough to record a message.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Enough to marry me while hiding it.””

“Yes.””

She looked destroyed.

“But I also found something.””

“What?””

She reached into her dress pocket.

A small flash drive.

I stared.

“You had that the whole time?””

She nodded.

“I didn’t know who to trust.””

My laugh was empty.

“So you trusted nobody.””

“I trusted you.””

“Then why not tell me?””

“Because I was afraid the person behind this would come after you.””

I looked at the flash drive.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Again.

I was beginning to hate that word.

Again.

Renee walked closer.

“Darius, your father recorded something.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“A video.””

My breathing stopped.

“A video of what?””

“Of the night everything changed.””

My mother looked terrified.

“Renee, don’t.””

Renee shook her head.

“No more protecting people.””

She looked at me.

“Your father knew someone close to him was betraying him.””

My eyes moved toward the crowd.

Everyone.

Family.

Friends.

People who came to celebrate.

Someone here knew.

Someone had been hiding.

I took the flash drive from Simone.

“Where can I watch this?””

Before anyone answered, the ballroom screen behind the altar suddenly turned on.

Everyone jumped.

The projector flickered.

Then a video file appeared.

No one touched anything.

No one connected anything.

But the screen was already playing.

A man appeared.

My father.

Older.

Tired.

Sitting at a desk.

The entire room froze.

I forgot how to breathe.

“Darius,” his recorded voice said.

My knees almost gave out.

“If you are watching this…”

He paused.

Then looked directly into the camera.

“…it means I was right to be afraid.””

My mother covered her mouth.

The video continued.

“I need you to understand something.””

My father leaned closer.

“The person who betrayed me was not a stranger.””

The ballroom went silent.

Then his next words appeared.

Words that destroyed everything I thought I knew.

“It was someone who loved you.””

The screen went black.

May you like

And beneath it, a message appeared.
