Chapter 11: The Second Voice Message

Calvin held the phone up.

Nobody moved.

Not even him.

The confidence was gone.

Replaced by something colder.

Certainty.

Like he had been waiting for this exact moment.

“You want the truth?””

He looked at me.

“Then listen.””

My mother stepped forward.

“No.””

Calvin looked at her.

“You don’t get to decide anymore.””

The words hit the room.

My mother stopped.

I looked at Calvin.

“What is that?””

“A recording.””

“From who?””

He looked at Simone.

“Her.””

My heart sank.

Simone’s face went pale.

“No.””

Calvin pressed the screen.

A voice came through.

Simone’s voice.

But different.

Not the frightened woman standing in front of me.

A Simone from another moment.

A Simone who sounded calm.

Controlled.

“Once Darius signs the marriage papers…”

My stomach tightened.

The same sentence.

The one that started everything.

Calvin watched me.

The recording continued.

“…the trust will be transferred into his control.””

I frowned.

That wasn’t what I expected.

Everyone looked confused.

The audio continued.

“And when that happens, Calvin will lose access.””

The room changed.

Calvin’s expression hardened.

I looked at him.

“Lose access?””

The recording played on.

Simone’s voice continued.

“He has been using Darius’s father’s company accounts for years.””

My eyes widened.

Calvin reached for the phone.

I stepped back.

“No.””

He stopped.

For the first time, he looked angry.

Not calm.

Not in control.

Angry.

Simone looked at me.

“That was the message I made.””

I stared.

“Then why did you send my mother the edited version?””

Her eyes filled.

“I didn’t.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“I recorded the full message.””

She looked at Calvin.

“He changed it.””

Silence.

Calvin laughed.

A short, humorless sound.

“You expect them to believe that?””

I looked at the phone.

Then at him.

Then at Simone.

My mind was trying to organize years of information in seconds.

Calvin had access.

Simone had a reason.

My mother had secrets.

Everyone had lied.

But not everyone was lying for the same reason.

I looked at Calvin.

“Where did you get this?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Renee stepped forward.

“You stole it.””

Calvin looked at her.

“You’re still alive?””

The cruelty in his voice made the room freeze.

Renee’s face changed.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“You knew I found the documents.””

“Yes.””

“And you still came here?””

Calvin smiled.

“Of course.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He turned toward me.

“Because I wanted you to see what happens when people who love you try to protect you.””

The words were almost convincing.

Almost.

But then I noticed something.

He kept looking at the phone.

Not the documents.

Not the people.

The phone.

Like it was the only thing that mattered.

I understood.

“You’re not afraid of the truth.””

Everyone looked at me.

I continued.

“You’re afraid of the recording.””

Calvin’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But enough.

I stepped closer.

“What’s on the full version?””

Nobody answered.

Then Simone whispered:

“The part where he admits it.””

My eyes moved to her.

“Admits what?””

She looked at Calvin.

“That he knew my brother’s situation.””

The room went quiet.

“And?””

She swallowed.

“That he used it to pressure me.””

Calvin laughed.

“Don’t.””

Simone ignored him.

“He told me if I didn’t marry Darius, he would destroy my family.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Calvin’s expression darkened.

“Careful.””

Simone looked at me.

“I never wanted your money.””

Her voice broke.

“I wanted a way out.””

The pieces finally started moving.

The recording.

The panic.

The fear.

The wedding.

I looked at Calvin.

“You forced her.””

He didn’t deny it.

Instead, he said:

“She was weak.””

The room went silent.

Simone closed her eyes.

And I saw something I hadn’t seen before.

Not guilt.

Not manipulation.

Fear.

Real fear.

Calvin stepped forward.

“You still don’t understand.””

I stared at him.

“Understand what?””

He smiled.

“That your father wasn’t protecting you from me.””

A pause.

“He was protecting everyone from you finding out what your family did.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Calvin reached into his folder.

Pulled out one final document.

And placed it on the table.

A birth certificate.

Not mine.

Someone else’s.

My eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

Because the name printed there was impossible.

A name I knew.

A name that changed everything.

May you like

Calvin whispered:

“Your father had another child.””
