Chapter 3: The Man Nobody Invited

The stranger didn’t walk into the ballroom like someone who had crashed a wedding.

He walked in like someone who knew exactly where he belonged.

That was what scared me.

The guests moved aside as he stepped forward.

He wore a dark suit, no tie, and an expression that made the room feel smaller.

Simone stared at him.

Her face had lost all color.

“Who is that?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

“Simone.””

Still nothing.

My mother whispered, “Darius…”

I looked at her.

She was watching the man too.

Not with confusion.

With recognition.

That made my chest tighten.

“You know him?””

Loretta swallowed.

“No.””

But her voice said yes.

The man stopped a few feet away.

“Darius Carter?””

I didn’t respond.

“Who are you?”” I asked.

He looked at Simone.

Then back at me.

“My name is Marcus.””

The silence stretched.

“And you need to hear what’s on that phone before you marry her.””

Simone stepped forward.

“Marcus, don’t.””

The way she said his name was different.

Not like a stranger.

Not like an enemy.

Like someone from a chapter of her life she had buried.

My hands tightened around the phone.

“What is going on?””

Marcus looked at me.

“She didn’t tell you?””

Simone’s eyes filled with panic.

“Darius, please don’t listen to him.””

Marcus gave a bitter smile.

“That’s exactly what she said she would do.””

I felt anger rise.

“Stop talking in riddles.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

He reached into his jacket.

Several guests gasped.

But he only pulled out an envelope.

He held it up.

“I came here because after today, this would be too late.””

Simone moved toward him.

“Give me that.””

Marcus stepped back.

“No.””

“Marcus, please.””

That word shocked me.

Please.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Fear.

I looked at her.

“What is in that envelope?””

Nobody answered.

Then Marcus said:

“The truth about why that recording exists.””

My mother covered her mouth.

I looked at her.

“You knew there was more?””

She shook her head quickly.

“No. I only heard the message.””

Marcus looked at me.

“She sent that message because she thought nobody would ever find out.””

Simone’s tears finally fell.

“Darius, don’t believe him.””

I stared at her.

“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””

That sentence seemed to hurt her more than anything.

She looked down.

For a moment, she wasn’t the bride standing in front of hundreds of people.

She was just a person who knew a secret had finally caught up with her.

Marcus extended the envelope.

“Open it.””

I didn’t move.

“What’s inside?””

“Documents.””

“What kind of documents?””

His eyes shifted to Simone.

“The kind that explain why she needed you to sign those marriage papers today.””

The ballroom erupted.

People whispered.

Phones came out.

The perfect wedding I had planned was disappearing in real time.

Simone turned toward the guests.

“Everyone needs to leave.””

Nobody listened.

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because this is private.””

I almost smiled.

Private.

That word.

The word people use when they want the truth hidden.

I held up the phone.

“You made it public the moment you sent this.””

She looked broken.

“I made a mistake.””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“What mistake?””

She didn’t answer.

Marcus did.

“She thought she could control everything.””

Simone looked at him with anger.

“You don’t get to judge me.””

“No,” Marcus said quietly.

“But he does.””

He looked at me.

“And he will.””

My thumb hovered over the play button again.

The recording.

The message.

The words that had stopped my wedding.

My mother gripped my arm.

“Darius, whatever you hear next…”

She paused.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“…you need to remember who stood beside you before you knew the truth.””

I looked at Simone.

She was crying now.

Reaching toward me.

“Darius, please.””

I pressed play.

The room held its breath.

The recording continued.

And Simone’s voice returned.

But this time, what I heard first wasn’t a threat.

It was a name.

My name.

Followed by a sentence that made my entire body freeze.

“Darius, if you’re hearing this…”

The audio crackled.

Then stopped.

The phone screen went black.

And underneath the dead battery warning was a notification that had just appeared.

A new message.

From Simone.

Sent one minute ago.

May you like

It contained only five words.

*“You don’t know the whole truth.””*
