Chapter 13: The Truth My Father Left Behind

When the lights returned, the ballroom looked exactly the same.

That was the cruelest part.

The flowers were still standing.

The candles were still burning.

The crystal chandelier was still glowing above us.

Everything looked perfect.

Except nothing was.

Not anymore.

“Elijah?””

My voice echoed through the room.

No answer.

I ran toward the doors.

Locked.

I pulled the handle again.

Nothing.

“Open these doors!””

Several guests jumped.

The staff rushed forward, confused and terrified.

My wedding had become something else entirely.

A courtroom.

A battlefield.

A place where every person had a secret and every secret had a consequence.

I turned around.

“Where did he go?””

Nobody spoke.

Then I looked at Calvin.

He was standing exactly where he had been.

Calm.

Too calm.

“You know.””

His eyes met mine.

“Know what?””

“Where my brother went.””

A small smile appeared.

“Your brother.””

The way he said it made my blood boil.

“Yes.””

Calvin looked around.

“You’re already choosing sides.””

I stepped closer.

“No.””

I pointed toward the locked doors.

“I’m choosing the truth.””

For the first time, Calvin looked irritated.

Not afraid.

Not defeated.

Annoyed.

Like the game wasn’t going the way he expected.

“You think truth is simple, Darius?””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I think lies are.””

The room went silent.

My mother slowly stood.

“Darius…”

I turned toward her.

I didn’t want another apology.

I didn’t want another explanation.

But I needed answers.

“Tell me about Vanessa.””

My mother froze.

The name alone changed her.

She looked older.

More tired.

Like she had been carrying that name for decades.

“Your father loved her.””

The honesty surprised me.

I nodded slowly.

“And?””

She looked down.

“And then she became pregnant.””

My chest tightened.

“Elijah.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t Dad tell me?””

My mother’s eyes filled.

“Because he thought he was protecting you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice cracked.

“Protecting me from what?””

She looked at Calvin.

“From people who wanted what your father built.””

Calvin laughed.

“That’s not the whole story.””

I turned.

“Then tell it.””

He stepped forward.

“Your father wasn’t just protecting you.””

He pointed toward the documents.

“He was protecting the company from collapse.””

I frowned.

“What does Elijah have to do with that?””

Calvin smiled.

“Everything.””

Renee moved closer.

“Darius, don’t listen to him.””

But I stopped her.

“No.””

I looked at everyone.

“No more choosing what I can handle.””

I picked up the folder.

“My whole life, people decided what truth I deserved.””

I looked at Calvin.

“My father.””

“My mother.””

“Simone.””

The last name hurt.

But I said it anyway.

“I’m done.””

I opened the folder.

Inside was another letter.

This one wasn’t hidden.

No black marks.

No missing pages.

Just my father’s handwriting.

I read it aloud.

“My son.””

The room went still.

“If you are reading this, then the people around you have failed to protect you from the truth.””

My throat tightened.

“But perhaps they succeeded in protecting you from something worse.””

I looked up.

Nobody moved.

“I spent my life believing strength meant carrying everything alone.””

The handwriting continued.

“I was wrong.””

A tear fell onto the page.

“Strength means trusting the people who deserve it.””

I looked at Simone.

She looked away.

My father continued.

“Elijah is my son. He deserves the truth. But he also deserves a choice.””

I turned the page.

And the next sentence changed everything.

“Calvin knows this.””

My eyes lifted.

Calvin’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

I kept reading.

“Calvin believes control is the same as protection. He does not understand that fear destroys the very things people are trying to save.””

Renee whispered:

“He knew.””

Calvin’s face hardened.

“Enough.””

I ignored him.

The final paragraph was shorter.

“If my family is standing together when this is discovered, then there is still hope.””

I looked at the last line.

My father’s final words.

“Darius, do not choose the person who has never lied to you. Choose the person who tells the truth when it costs them everything.””

The room was silent.

Because everyone knew.

Everyone knew exactly who that sentence was about.

My eyes moved.

To my mother.

To Simone.

To Renee.

Then to Calvin.

A phone rang.

Not mine.

Calvin’s.

He looked down.

His face changed.

A message appeared.

I saw only a few words.

*Elijah found the backup.*

Calvin looked up.

May you like

And for the first time all day…

he looked afraid.
