Chapter 9: The Recording That Was Never Meant for Me

Nobody moved.

The screen remained black.

But the words stayed there.

*FILE TWO AVAILABLE: THE WEDDING RECORDING.*

My wedding.

A recording.

My first thought was impossible.

Then I remembered the phone.

The voice message.

The hidden documents.

The secrets.

Everything had started with a recording.

Now there was another one.

“Who put that there?”” I asked.

No one answered.

I looked around the ballroom.

Everyone looked afraid.

Except one person.

My mother.

She wasn’t looking at the screen.

She was looking at me.

Like she knew what was coming.

“Mom.””

She closed her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology hurt more than anger.

“What does that mean?””

She didn’t answer.

Renee stepped forward.

“Darius, we need to leave.””

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“No more leaving.””

My voice echoed.

“If there is a file, we watch it.””

Simone nodded slowly.

“I agree.””

I looked at her.

That surprised me.

“You do?””

She swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Even if it hurts you?””

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.””

That was the first time all day I believed she might not be trying to control the outcome.

She might just be trying to survive it.

The ballroom screen flickered again.

A video loaded.

The title appeared.

*DARIUS CARTER — FINAL MESSAGE*

My father.

Again.

I stepped closer.

The room disappeared.

The video began.

My father sat in the same chair.

But this time, he looked different.

Not scared.

Determined.

“Darius,” he said.

“If you are watching this, then the people around you have finally stopped hiding things.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

He continued.

“I know you will be angry.””

A pause.

“You should be.””

My eyes burned.

Because somehow, even after death, my father knew me.

“But anger will make you miss the truth.””

The screen showed a document.

A signature.

Then another.

My father’s voice continued.

“The person who betrayed me did not steal from me.””

I frowned.

What?

“They protected something.””

The room shifted.

My mother looked confused.

Renee looked shocked.

I stared at the screen.

“Then why hide it?””

My father’s recorded voice answered.

“Because protecting something can look exactly like betrayal.””

The video paused.

A new image appeared.

A photograph.

Three people.

My father.

My mother.

And someone else.

Someone standing behind them.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized the person.

I looked toward the crowd.

And found the same face.

The same person.

Standing there.

Watching the video.

Watching me.

My father’s voice continued.

“The person you should fear is not the one who lied.””

A pause.

“It is the one who forced them to.””

Everyone turned.

The person in the crowd slowly stepped backward.

My mother whispered:

“No…”

I looked at her.

“You know them.””

She nodded.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.””

“Who is it?””

She couldn’t answer.

The person tried to leave.

I stepped forward.

“Stop.””

The entire ballroom froze.

The person turned.

And smiled.

Not nervously.

Not fearfully.

Calmly.

“I was wondering when you would finally figure it out.””

My blood ran cold.

Because this wasn’t someone from my father’s past.

This was someone from mine.

Someone who had congratulated me.

Someone who had hugged me.

Someone who had smiled in every wedding photo.

I looked at Simone.

She whispered the name.

And when she said it, everything changed.

“Darius…”

Her voice shook.

“That’s the person who gave me the idea for the recording.””

I stared.

“What?””

The person smiled wider.

Then said:

“She’s right.””

A pause.

“I’m the reason your wedding almost happened.””

I felt my hands go numb.

“Why?””

The person looked at me.

“Because if you married Simone today…”

May you like

They glanced at the phone in my hand.

“…you would have signed away everything before you ever learned the truth.””
