Chapter 3: The House She Wanted Before the Funeral
The sentence stayed in the air.
“You weren’t supposed to see that.””
Vanessa’s voice was barely a whisper.
But everyone heard it.
Daniel stared at her as if the woman standing in front of him had suddenly become a stranger wearing his fiancée’s face.
The ballroom lights reflected off the tears on Vanessa’s cheeks, but nobody rushed to comfort her.
Not anymore.
The guests who had arrived expecting cake, dancing, and wedding photographs were now watching something far more disturbing.
A family being torn apart.
Eleanor sat quietly in Daniel’s jacket, her hands folded tightly in her lap.
She looked smaller than she had minutes ago.
Not because she had lost her wig.
Not because everyone knew about her illness.
Because she had just heard someone discussing her future as if she was already gone.
Daniel held the document in his hand.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
“What does this mean?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Daniel, please.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“You don’t get to say please now.””
She looked around at the guests.
“Can we not do this here?””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You mean the same way you didn’t want my mother’s illness discussed here?””
Vanessa flinched.
“That’s not fair.””
“Fair?””
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
“My mother spent eight months fighting cancer alone because she was afraid of ruining my happiness.””
Then he looked back at Vanessa.
“And you were worried her treatment would affect your wedding pictures.””
“That’s not what happened.””
“Then explain.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Marcus Hill stepped closer.
“Mr. Reed, there are financial records connected to this as well.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What financial records?””
Marcus pulled another envelope from his folder.
“When we reviewed the unauthorized medical access request, we found communication between the person who submitted it and another party.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Daniel noticed immediately.
“Another party?””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Marcus looked down.
“The request involved information about Mrs. Reed’s property.””
Eleanor slowly lifted her head.
“My property?””
Daniel turned.
“What property?””
Eleanor hesitated.
The silence was enough.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Mom.””
She looked away.
“What?””
“What property is he talking about?””
Eleanor sighed.
“I didn’t want you involved.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He looked around the room.
“Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle.””
His voice broke.
“But nobody asks if I want the truth.””
Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel…”
“Tell me.””
She took a slow breath.
“The house.””
Daniel frowned.
“What about the house?””
“My house.””
The answer landed heavily.
Daniel stared at her.
“The one Dad built?””
She nodded.
The old family home.
The place where Daniel had grown up.
The place where his father had painted the walls himself before passing away.
The place where Eleanor still lived surrounded by memories.
“Yes,” she whispered.
“Why would Vanessa care about that?””
Nobody answered.
Then Marcus did.
“Because the house is worth significantly more than Mrs. Reed believes.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
She immediately shook her head.
“No.””
“Then why?””
“I didn’t know anything about the house.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You knew enough to ask about the ownership records.””
Vanessa’s face turned pale.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You looked up my mother’s house?””
“I was curious.””
“Curious?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“Because we were getting married.””
“That doesn’t answer the question.””
She looked frustrated.
“Because we needed a future.””
Daniel stared.
“A future?””
“Yes.””
She gestured around the ballroom.
“Do you think this lifestyle happens by itself?””
The room became silent.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“I’m saying we needed stability.””
“And my mother’s house gives you that?””
“No.””
Her answer was immediate.
Too immediate.
Daniel noticed.
Marcus noticed too.
Vanessa realized her mistake.
She lowered her voice.
“I’m not saying that.””
“But you are.””
Daniel shook his head slowly.
“I can’t believe this.””
Vanessa stepped toward him.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“No.””
“I love you.””
“You love the life you thought I could give you.””
“That’s not true.””
“Then why did you need my mother’s medical information?””
Silence.
Vanessa looked down.
Daniel waited.
Finally, she whispered:
“Because I was scared.””
Eleanor looked at her.
“Scared of what?””
Vanessa looked toward her.
And for a moment, something almost human appeared in her expression.
Fear.
“I grew up with nothing.””
Nobody spoke.
“My entire life, I watched people like your family have things I could never touch.””
Daniel frowned.
“My family?””
Vanessa looked around.
“This house. This money. This security.””
Eleanor shook her head.
“You think I was born with that?””
“I know you weren’t.””
“Then why?””
Vanessa’s eyes hardened again.
“Because you always acted like you were better than me.””
Eleanor looked stunned.
“I welcomed you.””
“You tolerated me.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa’s voice rose.
“You never said it, but I saw it in your face.””
Daniel interrupted.
“My mother gave you a necklace she inherited from her grandmother.””
Vanessa looked away.
“That was just a gift.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice was colder.
“That was her trying to love you.””
Vanessa swallowed.
Marcus stepped forward.
“There is another detail.””
Everyone looked at him.
Marcus removed a small flash drive from the envelope.
“This was recovered from a computer used to access Mrs. Reed’s patient portal.””
Daniel stared.
“What is that?””
“Messages.””
“With who?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Someone named Gregory Bell.””
Vanessa froze.
Daniel noticed.
“Who is Gregory Bell?””
Vanessa said nothing.
“Vanessa.””
Her eyes moved around the room.
Then she whispered:
“He was helping me.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Helping you do what?””
No answer.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
“Daniel, I was trying to protect our future.””
“By planning around my mother?””
“No.””
“By trying to take her house?””
“No.””
“By changing her medical records?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I never wanted her hurt.””
Eleanor finally spoke.
“Then why did you make decisions that could have hurt me?””
Vanessa looked at her.
For a second, there was guilt.
Real guilt.
Then it disappeared.
“I thought you were going to give everything to Daniel.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I thought your mother had plans.””
“What plans?””
“She never told you?””
Eleanor’s face changed.
Daniel slowly turned toward his mother.
“Mom?””
Eleanor looked terrified.
Not of Vanessa.
Of the secret she had protected for years.
“What is she talking about?””
Eleanor stood slowly.
Her hands trembled.
“Daniel…”
“What plans?””
She looked around the ballroom.
At the guests.
At the strangers who had witnessed everything.
Then she looked at her son.
“I was going to tell you after the wedding.””
Daniel’s voice softened.
“Tell me what?””
Eleanor reached into her purse.
She pulled out a small envelope.
One she had clearly carried with her all day.
“I had this prepared for you.””
Daniel stared.
“What is it?””
Eleanor handed it to him.
He opened it carefully.
Inside was a legal document.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
His breathing changed.
Because the document wasn’t about the house.
It wasn’t about money.
It was about ownership.
And the name listed as the primary beneficiary was not Daniel.
Not Eleanor.
Not anyone he expected.
Daniel looked up.
“Mom…”
Eleanor’s face was full of sorrow.
“I was never planning to leave you the house.””
Vanessa watched closely.
Daniel looked back at the paper.
“Then who?””
Eleanor’s voice trembled.
“The person your father asked me to protect.””
Daniel froze.
“Dad?””
A cold silence spread through the ballroom.
Because Daniel knew his father had been dead for fifteen years.
And nobody had ever mentioned another person.
Another heir.
Another secret.
Marcus quietly spoke.
“Mr. Reed…”
Daniel looked up.
“Yes?””
Marcus pointed at the document.
“The person named there is the reason someone tried to access your mother’s medical records.””
Daniel’s heart pounded.
“Who is it?””
Eleanor closed her eyes.
May you like
And then she said a name Daniel had never heard before.
“Your father’s daughter.””
