Chapter 8: The Name Written on My Birth Certificate

Daniel couldn’t move.

The envelope sat in his hands, heavier than anything he had ever held.

A single piece of paper.

A single truth.

And somehow it had the power to rewrite his entire life.

He looked at Olivia.

“Who changed it?””

Nobody answered.

Not immediately.

Because everyone in that ballroom seemed to know something except him.

Again.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Mom.””

Eleanor’s face was pale.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I need you to answer me.””

She looked down.

“I didn’t change anything.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The answer hurt because it wasn’t the answer he needed.

“Then who?””

Olivia stepped forward.

“Your father believed it was someone who had access to the family records.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Who had access?””

Olivia glanced toward Marcus.

Marcus slowly spoke.

“The company accountant.””

Daniel frowned.

“Gregory Bell?””

Olivia nodded.

“Yes.””

Vanessa immediately stepped back.

Daniel noticed.

“You knew.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“You knew Gregory was involved with my father’s company.””

“I knew he worked there.””

“You knew more.””

Vanessa looked angry.

“You’re blaming me for everything.””

Daniel stared at her.

“I’m asking questions.””

“No.””

Her voice rose.

“You’re looking for someone to hate.””

The words echoed.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Eleanor quietly said:

“She’s right about one thing.””

Daniel turned.

“Mom?””

Eleanor looked at him.

“You have every reason to be angry.””

Her voice shook.

“But don’t let anger stop you from seeing the truth.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I don’t even know what the truth is anymore.””

Eleanor’s eyes filled.

“I know.””

She looked at Olivia.

“And I’m sorry.””

Olivia’s expression softened slightly.

“You don’t have to apologize to me.””

“Yes, I do.””

Eleanor swallowed.

“I promised your father I would protect both of you.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Both of us?””

“Yes.””

Olivia nodded.

“That’s why I came.””

She looked at Daniel.

“Your father didn’t want us to hate each other.””

Daniel laughed sadly.

“He kept us apart.””

“Yes.””

“Sounds like he failed.””

Olivia looked at him.

“No.””

She held up the envelope.

“He knew people would try to use us against each other.””

Daniel frowned.

“What people?””

Olivia opened the envelope.

Inside was an old document.

She handed it to him.

Daniel read the heading.

His face changed.

*PATERNITY RECORD AMENDMENT REQUEST*

His hands tightened.

“This is my birth record.””

“Yes.””

He scanned the page.

There were signatures.

Dates.

Official stamps.

Then one name.

His expression changed.

“Gregory Bell.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Let me see.””

Daniel handed him the paper.

Marcus read it carefully.

“This is significant.””

“What?””

Marcus looked up.

“Gregory wasn’t just involved with the company.””

He pointed to the signature.

“He was authorized to manage family legal documents.””

Daniel stared.

“So he could change records.””

“Yes.””

A cold silence followed.

Vanessa whispered:

“But why?””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked genuinely confused.

“If Gregory changed Daniel’s records, what did he gain?””

It was the first intelligent question she had asked all night.

Daniel noticed.

Marcus answered.

“Control.””

“Control of what?””

“Your father’s estate.””

Olivia nodded.

“Gregory knew about the trust.””

Daniel looked at her.

“How?””

“Because he helped create it.””

The room went silent.

Marcus looked shocked.

“Then he knew everything.””

“Yes.””

Olivia’s voice hardened.

“He knew about me. He knew about Daniel. He knew about the evidence.””

Daniel stared at the document.

“So he changed my records to make me easier to remove?””

Olivia nodded.

“Exactly.””

Daniel felt sick.

“My entire identity was a threat to him.””

“Yes.””

“And my father knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

Olivia looked down.

“Because he was afraid.””

“Of Gregory?””

“No.””

She looked at Eleanor.

“Of what would happen to your mother.””

Daniel turned.

“What does that mean?””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Your father believed Gregory would hurt anyone who stood in his way.””

Daniel stared.

“Did he threaten you?””

Silence.

That was the answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Mom.””

She whispered:

“He didn’t threaten me directly.””

“Then how?””

“He made sure I understood.””

“Understood what?””

“That accidents happen.””

The room went still.

Daniel’s face hardened.

“He threatened you.””

Eleanor looked away.

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

“And you helped him.””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“Gregory used you.””

“Yes.””

“But you still worked with him.””

She looked down.

“I didn’t know who he really was.””

Daniel’s expression softened slightly.

For one moment, he saw fear instead of arrogance.

Then he remembered the hospital bracelet.

The ripped wig.

The humiliation.

The lies.

“I don’t know what to believe from you anymore.””

Vanessa started crying.

“I made mistakes.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You made choices.””

The distinction destroyed her.

Marcus’s phone suddenly rang.

He answered.

“Yes?””

His face changed.

“What?””

Everyone looked at him.

“What happened?””

Marcus turned away slightly.

Then his voice lowered.

“Are you sure?””

A pause.

Then:

“Send it to me.””

He ended the call.

Daniel approached.

“What?””

Marcus looked at Eleanor.

“Mrs. Reed…”

“What?””

“The police have located Gregory Bell.””

Daniel froze.

“Where?””

Marcus hesitated.

“At the airport.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Airport?””

Daniel noticed.

“You know something?””

“No.””

“You reacted.””

“I didn’t.””

Marcus continued.

“He was attempting to leave the country.””

A wave of whispers moved through the room.

Daniel looked at Olivia.

“Did he know we found the documents?””

Olivia shook her head.

“He must have.””

“How?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel slowly turned.

Toward Vanessa.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“You called him.””

“No.””

“Then how did he know?””

“I don’t know.””

Marcus looked at his phone again.

“There’s something else.””

Daniel sighed.

“What now?””

Marcus looked serious.

“Before Gregory left, he sent one final message.””

“To who?””

Marcus looked at the screen.

“To Vanessa.””

The room froze.

Vanessa’s face went white.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel stared.

“What did it say?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then read the message aloud.

“‘She found the box. We need to move before Daniel learns the final truth.’”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Final truth?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know what he meant.””

“Didn’t you?””

“No.””

“Then why did he send it to you?””

She had no answer.

Olivia stepped forward.

“There’s more.””

Everyone looked at her.

She held the last page from the envelope.

“My father left one final note.””

Daniel looked at it.

“What does it say?””

Olivia unfolded it.

Her expression changed as she read.

Then she looked at Daniel.

“Your father wrote this after discovering Gregory’s betrayal.””

Daniel waited.

Olivia’s voice softened.

“He said the person who helped Gregory wasn’t working for money.””

A pause.

“They were working because they wanted revenge.””

Daniel frowned.

“Revenge against who?””

Olivia looked at Eleanor.

Then at Vanessa.

Then finally at Daniel.

“Your father wrote one name.””

She handed him the page.

Daniel read it.

And his entire body went cold.

Because the name written there was not Gregory.

It was not Vanessa.

It was not Thomas.

It was someone Daniel had trusted his whole life.

Someone he had defended.

Someone he had never once questioned.

Daniel whispered:

“No…”

Eleanor covered her mouth.

Olivia closed her eyes.

Because the final secret was finally exposed.

The person who helped destroy William Reed’s legacy…

was the person Daniel had always called family.
