Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
The old photograph shook between Daniel’s fingers.
Not because of the paper.
Because of the words written on the back.
“Your mother is protecting you from the person who betrayed us both.””
His father’s handwriting.
His father’s warning.
A message that had been hidden for years.
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
“Who?””
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“Who betrayed Dad?””
Eleanor didn’t answer.
She just stared at the photograph.
Like she had been carrying the weight of that question every day since her husband died.
“Mom.””
Her eyes lifted.
“I wanted you to have a normal life.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Normal?””
He looked around the ballroom.
“At this point, I don’t even know what normal is.””
The guests stood silently.
Many had already left.
The ones who remained were no longer there for the wedding.
They were there because they needed to know how deep the truth went.
Daniel looked at Rachel’s number still displayed on his phone.
“Rachel?””
“Yes?””
“Do you know who my father meant?””
A long pause.
Then Rachel answered:
“Yes.””
Daniel’s chest tightened.
“Who?””
Rachel’s voice became quiet.
“Someone your father trusted more than anyone.””
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
His mother looked away.
“Who?””
Rachel didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“Your uncle.””
Daniel froze.
“My uncle?””
“Yes.””
Daniel frowned.
“I don’t have an uncle.””
Eleanor’s face changed.
That reaction told him everything.
Daniel turned slowly.
“Mom.””
She swallowed.
“His name was Thomas.””
“His name was?””
Eleanor nodded.
“Your father’s older brother.””
Daniel stared.
“Dad had a brother?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
Eleanor’s eyes filled.
“Thomas died before you were born.””
Daniel stepped back.
“So why hide him?””
Eleanor looked down.
“Because his death was connected to everything.””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
She seemed almost relieved that attention had shifted.
“You’re blaming a dead man?””
Daniel turned.
“No one is blaming anyone yet.””
“But you’re believing all this?””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You’re the last person who gets to question secrets.””
Vanessa flinched.
“I’m trying to help.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You’re trying to survive.””
The words hit her.
She looked away.
Marcus gathered the documents.
“Mr. Reed, if Thomas Reed was involved, then the documents we found make more sense.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What documents?””
Marcus pulled out a printed email.
“This.””
Daniel took it.
The email was dated two months before his father’s death.
The sender name was hidden.
But the message was clear.
“I know where the evidence is. I know what William hid. If Olivia receives what belongs to her, everything comes out.””
Daniel read the words twice.
“Everything comes out?””
Marcus nodded.
“That’s why we believe the will was only part of the problem.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What else was there?””
Eleanor spoke quietly.
“Your father discovered something about the family business.””
Daniel looked at her.
“The company?””
She nodded.
“My father’s company?””
“Yes.””
Daniel laughed in disbelief.
“How many things did everyone keep from me?””
Nobody answered.
He looked at Eleanor.
“You let me believe Dad died peacefully.””
“He did.””
“Did he?””
The question hurt.
Eleanor looked away.
“He was sick.””
“But?””
She took a breath.
“But he was also afraid.””
Daniel’s anger softened slightly.
“Afraid of what?””
Eleanor looked toward the wedding doors.
“Thomas.””
A silence followed.
Daniel sat down.
He felt like the floor beneath him had disappeared.
“My father was afraid of his own brother?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“Because Thomas believed everything your father had belonged to him.””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“And Olivia?””
“She was the final thing he couldn’t control.””
Marcus nodded.
“That matches what we found.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What did you find?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Your father created a separate trust for Olivia.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Okay.””
“But he also placed evidence into that trust.””
“Evidence of what?””
Marcus looked serious.
“Financial fraud.””
The words landed heavily.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“And Gregory?””
Marcus nodded.
“Gregory Bell was connected.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She looked terrified.
“Gregory never told me that.””
Daniel stared.
“Then what did he tell you?””
She hesitated.
“That Olivia was trying to take what belonged to you.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?””
Vanessa looked desperate.
“He said your mother was hiding documents because she wanted everything controlled by Olivia.””
Eleanor looked hurt.
“So you believed him.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I didn’t know who to trust.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“You trusted the man helping you steal information from my mother?””
“I wasn’t stealing.””
“You changed her medical records.””
“I made one request.””
Marcus interrupted.
“One request that could have changed her treatment.””
Vanessa went silent.
Daniel looked at her.
“What exactly did Gregory promise you?””
Her eyes filled.
“He said if we found the evidence first…”
She stopped.
“Finish.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“He said we could force Olivia out.””
Daniel stared.
“We?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I thought I was protecting our future.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You were protecting a future you planned without asking me.””
Vanessa began crying.
“I loved you.””
Daniel looked away.
“I believe you thought you did.””
That sentence hurt more than anger.
Because it meant he no longer knew what was real.
Eleanor slowly approached him.
“Daniel.””
He looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
“For what?””
“For keeping secrets.””
She touched his arm.
“But your father loved you.””
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“I know.””
“And I loved you.””
“I know.””
“Then please believe one thing.””
He looked at her.
“I never protected Olivia because I loved her more.””
Eleanor’s voice broke.
“I protected her because nobody else did.””
Daniel looked down.
For the first time, he understood.
His mother wasn’t hiding Olivia from him.
She was protecting Olivia from everyone else.
A phone suddenly buzzed.
Everyone turned.
It was Marcus’s phone.
He answered.
“Hello?””
His expression changed.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“When?””
Everyone watched his face.
“What happened?””
Marcus slowly lowered the phone.
His eyes moved toward Daniel.
“We have a problem.””
Daniel stood.
“What?””
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“The house.””
Eleanor went pale.
“What about the house?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Someone broke in.””
Daniel’s heart dropped.
“Was anything stolen?””
Marcus looked at Eleanor.
“No.””
“Then what?””
Marcus handed him the phone.
A picture appeared on the screen.
A photograph taken by the security system.
A person standing inside Eleanor’s living room.
Daniel stared.
The person’s face was partially hidden.
But the clothing was unmistakable.
The person was wearing the same suit from the wedding.
Daniel slowly looked across the ballroom.
Toward Vanessa.
Because the person in the photo was not a stranger.
It was someone who had been standing beside him minutes earlier.
Vanessa whispered:
“I didn’t go there.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel zoomed in on the image.
And then he saw something in the person’s hand.
A small envelope.
The same kind Eleanor had hidden.
The same kind his father had used.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“What are they looking for?””
Marcus’s voice was low.
“The original will.””
Daniel stared at the picture.
Then Eleanor grabbed his arm.
Her face was full of fear.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
She whispered:
“The person in that photo isn’t looking for the will.””
Daniel turned.
“Then what are they looking for?””
Eleanor looked at the screen.
At the figure standing in her home.
And she said the one thing that made Daniel’s blood run cold.
“They’re looking for the person your father left the evidence to.””
A message appeared on Marcus’s phone.
A new security alert.
The intruder had found something.
A video file had been opened.

And the name of the file appeared on the screen:
*“THE TRUTH ABOUT DANIEL REED’S BIRTH.””*
