Chapter 9: The Betrayal Hidden in My Own Family

Daniel stared at the name.

His eyes moved across the page again.

Then again.

As if reading it more times could somehow change the letters.

But they didn’t.

The name remained.

The person who helped Gregory Bell.

The person who betrayed his father.

The person who had been protecting a secret for decades.

His mother.

Eleanor Reed.

Daniel stopped breathing.

The room disappeared.

All he could hear was the sound of his own heartbeat.

“No.””

The word escaped before he could stop it.

Eleanor looked at him with tears in her eyes.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

He stepped back.

“You.””

The pain in his voice was worse than anger.

“You were the person Dad couldn’t trust?””

Eleanor immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why is your name on the paper?””

“I need to explain.””

“You always need to explain.””

The sentence cut through the room.

Eleanor lowered her eyes.

Daniel looked at Olivia.

“Did you know?””

Olivia’s face showed sadness.

“Not everything.””

“But you suspected?””

“Yes.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

A broken, exhausted sound.

“Everyone suspected.””

He looked around.

“Everyone knew something.””

His eyes returned to his mother.

“And I knew nothing.””

Eleanor moved closer.

“Daniel, please listen.””

He stepped away.

“I spent my whole life believing you protected me.””

“I did.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Dad write your name?””

Eleanor looked at the paper.

Then at Olivia.

Then finally at Daniel.

“Because I was the person who helped him.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“I helped him.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa watched carefully.

For once, she wasn’t trying to defend herself.

She was just listening.

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“Helped him do what?””

Eleanor sat down.

She looked older than she had moments earlier.

“I helped your father investigate Gregory.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then why would he write your name?””

“Because your father knew someone would find the note.””

Olivia nodded.

Daniel looked at her.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why let me think my mother betrayed him?””

Olivia’s expression changed.

“Because your father wanted you to ask the right question.””

Daniel stared.

“What question?””

Olivia looked at Eleanor.

“What exactly did she do?””

Daniel turned back.

His mother’s eyes were full of tears.

“I was the person who gave Gregory access.””

The words shocked everyone.

Daniel went still.

“You did what?””

“Years ago, when your father became sick, he trusted me to handle certain things.””

Eleanor swallowed.

“I gave Gregory permission to review some documents.””

“And?””

“And I made a mistake.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“What kind of mistake?””

“I trusted the wrong person.””

Silence.

Daniel looked away.

“So Dad blamed you.””

“No.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“He never blamed me.””

“Then why hide this?””

“Because I blamed myself.””

Her voice broke.

“Your father found out Gregory was stealing from the company because of information I gave him.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Information?””

“Yes.””

“What information?””

Eleanor hesitated.

Then answered:

“Your father’s plans.””

Daniel frowned.

“What plans?””

“The trust. Olivia. The changes to his estate.””

She looked down.

“I told Gregory your father was planning to correct his past.””

Daniel understood.

“Because you thought he could help.””

“Yes.””

“And he used that information against Dad.””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“So you didn’t betray him.””

Eleanor’s eyes filled.

“I gave the betrayer the map.””

The sentence was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Daniel’s anger softened.

Not gone.

But changed.

Because suddenly he saw the difference.

His mother hadn’t destroyed the family.

She had accidentally opened the door for someone who did.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Eleanor looked at him.

“Because after your father died, I found out Gregory had changed your birth records.””

Daniel looked shocked again.

“And?””

“And I confronted him.””

“What happened?””

Eleanor’s hands trembled.

“He threatened me.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What did he say?””

She swallowed.

“He said if I told you the truth, he would make sure you lost everything.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“The house?””

“No.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“Not the house.””

“Then what?””

She looked at him.

“You.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“Gregory knew the birth record had been changed.””

Her voice became softer.

“He knew if your identity was questioned, your father’s entire estate could be frozen.””

Daniel stared.

“So he planned to erase me.””

“Yes.””

“And you stayed quiet?””

“I stayed alive.””

The honesty stopped him.

Eleanor wiped her tears.

“I had you to protect.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa quietly said:

“Gregory told me something similar.””

Everyone looked at her.

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“What?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“He said your family had secrets that would destroy you.””

Olivia crossed her arms.

“And you believed him.””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“I thought he was helping me.””

“You wanted the house.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Daniel looked at her.

“Did you know Gregory planned to hurt my mother?””

“No.””

“Did you know he changed her medical records?””

“No.””

“Did you know he was trying to destroy my father’s legacy?””

“No.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Then what did you know?””

Vanessa’s face crumpled.

“I knew there was money.””

The honesty was painful.

“I knew there was a trust.””

She looked at Eleanor.

“And I thought if I helped Gregory find proof that Olivia wasn’t legitimate…”

She stopped.

Daniel finished for her.

“You thought you could remove her.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Yes.””

Nobody spoke.

The truth was finally out.

Not because anyone confessed willingly.

Because the lies had nowhere left to hide.

Marcus checked his phone.

“Gregory has been arrested.””

Daniel looked up.

“What charges?””

“Fraud. Identity document manipulation. Unauthorized access to medical records.””

“And Vanessa?””

Everyone looked at her.

Marcus answered carefully.

“That depends on what investigators find.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

The reality finally reached her.

Her wedding day.

Her perfect plan.

Everything collapsing.

Daniel looked at her.

“I don’t know if you ever loved me.””

She started crying.

“I did.””

“Maybe.””

He looked toward the destroyed wedding altar.

“But love without honesty isn’t enough.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel nodded slightly.

“I believe you’re sorry.””

The words surprised her.

“But I don’t know if I can forgive you.””

She accepted that.

For the first time, she didn’t argue.

Olivia stepped toward Daniel.

“There’s one more thing.””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“What now?””

She held out another envelope.

“This was hidden inside the box.””

Daniel took it.

“My father wrote this?””

“Yes.””

He opened it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Daniel read silently.

Then his eyes filled.

“What does it say?”” Eleanor asked.

Daniel looked at her.

His father’s final words were meant for him.

Not Olivia.

Not Eleanor.

Him.

“He said he was sorry.””

Eleanor covered her mouth.

Daniel continued reading.

“He said he spent too much time trying to fix the past and not enough time explaining the truth.””

A tear fell.

“He said he loved me.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel turned the page.

Then stopped.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Olivia asked.

Daniel looked up.

“There’s a second part.””

He read it again.

Then slowly looked at Eleanor.

His mother went pale.

“What does it say?””

Daniel’s voice shook.

“It says Gregory wasn’t the first person who tried to destroy our family.””

A chill moved through the room.

“He said the person who started everything was still alive.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked at Olivia.

“Who?””

Olivia stared at the letter.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel looked at the final line.

A name was written there.

A name his father had underlined.

The name of the person who had been hiding behind every betrayal.

Daniel whispered:

“Thomas.””

Olivia shook her head.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because Thomas died twenty years ago.””

Daniel looked at the letter.

Then at Eleanor.

May you like

Because his father had written one final warning beneath the name.

*“Never trust the death certificate.””*
