Chapter 7: The Truth Buried With My Father

The file name stayed on the screen.

*THE TRUTH ABOUT DANIEL REED’S BIRTH.*

Nobody spoke.

The ballroom, already filled with shattered dreams and unanswered questions, became completely silent again.

Daniel stared at the words.

His birth.

Not the will.

Not the company.

Not Olivia.

Him.

“What does that mean?””

His voice sounded distant, even to himself.

Eleanor’s hand tightened around his arm.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

He pulled away gently.

“No more.””

His eyes moved between everyone in the room.

“No more looking at each other like you know something I don’t.””

Nobody answered.

“Open the file.””

Marcus hesitated.

“Mr. Reed—”

“Open it.””

Daniel’s voice carried through the room.

He wasn’t asking anymore.

Marcus looked at the security alert again.

“The system is still connected to the house camera.””

“Then play it.””

A few seconds later, Marcus connected the video feed to the ballroom screen.

The wedding projector, which had been meant to display photos of Daniel and Vanessa’s relationship, now showed footage from Eleanor’s home.

The irony was painful.

The first image appeared.

Eleanor’s living room.

The same room Daniel had grown up in.

The same old brown sofa where he had fallen asleep as a child.

The same family photographs on the walls.

Then the intruder stepped into view.

Everyone watched.

The person moved slowly through the house, searching drawers and cabinets.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Who is that?””

Marcus zoomed in.

The person’s face was hidden by a hood.

But the movements were familiar.

Too familiar.

Then the figure stopped in front of a bookshelf.

They reached behind several old books.

And pulled out a small wooden box.

Eleanor gasped.

“No.””

Daniel turned.

“You know that box?””

She looked terrified.

“Yes.””

“What is it?””

Eleanor’s lips trembled.

“That box belonged to your father.””

The figure opened it.

Inside were several documents.

Photographs.

A small envelope.

The intruder picked up the envelope.

Then the video froze.

A notification appeared.

*REMOTE ACCESS INTERRUPTED.*

Marcus frowned.

“They cut the connection.””

Daniel stared at the frozen image.

“They knew we were watching.””

“Yes.””

“Whoever that is knew.””

Marcus nodded.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She looked frightened.

But not surprised.

And Daniel noticed.

“You knew.””

Vanessa shook her head immediately.

“No.””

“You knew something would happen.””

“I didn’t.””

“Then why aren’t you shocked?””

She looked at him.

“I am.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You’re scared.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“Daniel.””

“You’re scared because you know what they found.””

“I don’t.””

“Then tell me why your face changed when that box appeared.””

She didn’t answer.

Eleanor watched Vanessa carefully.

Then she whispered:

“Because she’s seen it before.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“What?””

Eleanor looked devastated.

“She knows about the box.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s not true.””

Eleanor’s eyes filled with disappointment.

“You came to my house three weeks ago.””

Daniel froze.

“Vanessa?””

Vanessa looked away.

“You went to my mother’s house?””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then what was it?””

“I was visiting.””

“At midnight?””

Silence.

Daniel looked at her.

“At midnight?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I couldn’t sleep.””

“You broke into my mother’s house because you couldn’t sleep?””

“I had a key.””

The answer shocked everyone.

Daniel stared.

“My mother gave you a key?””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I trusted her.””

The words came out painfully.

“She was going to be my daughter.””

Vanessa looked down.

For the first time, she looked ashamed.

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t understand you.””

“I was looking for answers.””

“About what?””

Vanessa looked toward the screen.

“About Olivia.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“You keep saying her name like she did something.””

“I was told she was dangerous.””

“By Gregory.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“There’s something we need to consider.””

“What?””

“The person in the video may not be working with Vanessa.””

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus continued.

“They may be working against her.””

Daniel frowned.

“Explain.””

“Someone wanted the evidence found.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Why?””

“Because if they wanted to destroy it, they would have taken the box and disappeared.””

Marcus pointed at the screen.

“But they opened the file.””

Eleanor whispered:

“They wanted us to see.””

A chill moved through Daniel.

Someone had broken into his mother’s home.

Not to hide the truth.

To reveal it.

“But why?””

Marcus looked at the frozen image.

“Because whatever is inside that file changes everything.””

Daniel turned toward Eleanor.

“Mom.””

She didn’t answer.

“Mom, what is in that file?””

Eleanor looked at him.

Her eyes were full of guilt.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel stared.

“You don’t know?””

“I knew your father created it.””

“What was it?””

She swallowed.

“He called it a protection file.””

“For who?””

Eleanor looked at him.

“For you.””

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Why would Dad need to protect me?””

She looked away.

“Because he discovered something about your birth.””

The words hit harder than he expected.

Daniel sat down.

“What does that mean?””

Eleanor remained silent.

“Mom.””

Her hands shook.

“Your father loved you.””

Daniel looked up.

“That doesn’t answer me.””

“I know.””

“Was I his son?””

The question broke everyone.

Eleanor immediately moved toward him.

“Yes.””

Her answer was instant.

“You are his son.””

“Then why is there a file?””

She looked at him.

“Because your father discovered a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

She nodded.

“One made before you were born.””

Daniel stared.

“What mistake?””

Eleanor opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

A sound came from the ballroom entrance.

Everyone turned.

The doors slowly opened.

A woman stood there.

She was around Daniel’s age.

Elegant.

Calm.

Holding a small wooden box.

The same kind from the video.

Everyone froze.

Eleanor whispered:

“Olivia.””

Daniel stared.

The woman looked at him.

After thirty-six years of not knowing she existed, he finally saw his sister.

Olivia Bennett walked slowly into the ballroom.

Her eyes moved over the destroyed wedding.

The guests.

Vanessa.

Marcus.

Then finally Eleanor.

“I told you I would come when the truth was ready.””

Eleanor’s eyes filled.

“I’m sorry.””

Olivia looked at her.

“I know.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re Olivia?””

She looked at him.

“Yes.””

“My sister?””

A painful smile appeared on her face.

“Half-sister.””

The honesty hurt.

But Daniel appreciated it.

He had heard enough lies.

“Why are you here?””

Olivia held up the wooden box.

“Because I was the one who broke into your mother’s house.””

Everyone reacted.

Daniel stared.

“You?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Olivia looked at Vanessa.

Then back at Daniel.

“Because I needed to know if my father was right.””

“Right about what?””

She opened the box.

Inside was a sealed envelope.

The handwriting on it was familiar.

William Reed.

Daniel’s father.

Olivia handed it to him.

“He wrote this the week before he died.””

Daniel looked at the envelope.

His hands trembled.

“What does it say?””

Olivia’s expression turned serious.

“It says your father discovered that the person who betrayed him wasn’t trying to steal his money.””

A pause.

“They were trying to erase his son.””

Daniel felt the room spin.

“What?””

Olivia looked directly into his eyes.

“And that person has been close to you your entire life.””

Daniel looked around the ballroom.

At Eleanor.

At Vanessa.

At everyone.

Then Olivia whispered:

“Daniel, your father didn’t hide your birth certificate because he doubted you were his son.””

She opened the envelope slightly.

“He hid it because someone changed it.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

“Changed it?””

Olivia nodded.

“And the person who did it…”

May you like

She looked toward Eleanor.

“…is the reason your father spent his final days afraid.””
