Chapter 5: The Evidence Hidden Inside the Old House

“Because Vanessa isn’t looking for the will.””

The woman’s voice trembled through the phone.

“She’s looking for the evidence that proves she destroyed it.””

Daniel stood completely still.

The ballroom felt colder.

Not because the temperature had changed.

Because every person inside the room had just heard a sentence that could destroy a life.

Daniel slowly looked at Vanessa.

She looked back at him.

For the first time since the wedding began, she looked genuinely afraid.

Not angry.

Not offended.

Afraid.

“Who is this?”” Daniel asked into the phone.

There was a pause.

Then the woman answered.

“My name is Rachel Bennett.””

Daniel’s eyes widened.

Bennett.

The same last name.

The same name connected to the sister he never knew existed.

“Are you Olivia’s mother?””

The woman took a shaky breath.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

His mother looked like she had been expecting this moment for years.

“Why are you calling now?””

Rachel’s voice became softer.

“Because I promised your father I would only reveal the truth when Eleanor was ready.””

Daniel frowned.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

The word hit him again.

Everyone kept bringing his father into the room.

A man who had been gone for fifteen years.

A man who somehow still had secrets powerful enough to destroy a wedding.

“What truth?”” Daniel asked.

Rachel hesitated.

“The truth about why your father changed his will.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Daniel, don’t listen to her.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel lowered the phone slightly.

“You know who she is?””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“I know enough.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“She’s trying to manipulate you.””

Rachel’s voice came through the phone.

“Vanessa Carter.””

The entire ballroom froze.

Rachel continued.

“I know exactly who you are.””

Vanessa went silent.

Daniel looked between them.

“How do you know Vanessa?””

No one answered.

That silence told him everything.

Daniel gripped the phone tighter.

“Mom?””

Eleanor looked away.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“Not another secret.””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

“Sorry for what?””

“For not telling you sooner.””

The guests watched silently.

This was no longer entertainment.

This was a family tragedy unfolding in front of them.

Daniel turned back to the phone.

“Rachel, tell me what is happening.””

Rachel exhaled.

“Your father discovered that someone was trying to access his assets before he changed his will.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Someone?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Rachel didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Someone close to him.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You haven’t even heard the name.””

“I know what she’s doing.””

Rachel continued.

“Your father believed someone was manipulating him. He believed someone was trying to make sure Olivia never received anything.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Vanessa knew about Olivia?””

Rachel answered quietly.

“Yes.””

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

“How?””

Vanessa looked trapped.

“I can explain.””

“You always say that.””

“I found out during our engagement.””

“And you never told me?””

“I was trying to understand.””

“Understand what?””

Vanessa’s voice became defensive.

“Your family.””

Daniel stared at her.

“My family?””

“Yes.””

She looked toward Eleanor.

“She knew everything.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“I knew your father had regrets.””

“No,” Vanessa said.

“You knew more.””

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Did you?””

Eleanor’s eyes filled.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

Again.

Daniel whispered:

“How much?””

Eleanor sat down slowly.

“I knew your father wanted to correct his mistakes.””

“By leaving everything to Olivia?””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked stunned.

“And you agreed?””

Eleanor looked at him.

“I helped him.””

The room erupted in whispers.

Daniel stepped back.

“You helped him?””

“Yes.””

“Mom, I thought you and Dad built everything together.””

“We did.””

“Then why would you help him give it away?””

Eleanor looked toward the floor.

“Because Olivia was his daughter.””

Daniel didn’t respond.

“She lost years with him because adults made choices before she had a voice.””

Her voice broke.

“Your father carried that guilt every day.””

Daniel swallowed.

“But you kept it from me.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That you would hate him.””

Daniel looked away.

“I don’t know what I feel anymore.””

A quiet moment passed.

Then Marcus spoke.

“There’s another issue.””

Daniel turned.

“What now?””

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“The evidence Rachel mentioned may explain why someone attempted to interfere with Mrs. Reed’s medical records.””

Daniel frowned.

“How?””

“The updated will was not just about property.””

Marcus opened the folder again.

“It contained information about financial accounts, insurance policies, and a trust your father created.””

Daniel stared.

“A trust?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Daniel noticed.

“You knew about that too.””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

She looked away.

“I heard rumors.””

“From who?””

Silence.

“From who?””

Finally, she whispered:

“Gregory.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Gregory Bell.

The name kept appearing.

“Who is Gregory Bell?””

Vanessa looked nervous.

“A financial advisor.””

Marcus interrupted.

“Not exactly.””

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus continued.

“Gregory Bell was once your father’s financial advisor.””

Daniel froze.

“Once?””

“Yes.””

“Why isn’t he anymore?””

Marcus looked at Eleanor.

“Because Mr. Reed removed him from his position shortly before his death.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“Why?””

Eleanor answered quietly.

“Because your father discovered money missing.””

The room went silent.

“How much?””

Eleanor hesitated.

“Almost half a million dollars.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“And Gregory helped you investigate my mother?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“He told me he was trying to help.””

“He stole from my father.””

“I didn’t know that.””

“But you trusted him.””

“I was desperate.””

“For what?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“For us.””

Daniel laughed softly.

There was no humor in it.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You keep using us as an excuse.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“I loved you.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Maybe you did.””

The words hurt her.

“But you loved what came with me more.””

She looked like she wanted to argue.

But she couldn’t.

Because everyone knew.

Rachel’s voice interrupted.

“Daniel?””

He raised the phone again.

“Yes?””

“You need to leave that ballroom.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

“Because if Vanessa knows the documents are missing, she will try to find them before you do.””

Daniel looked around.

“My mother’s house?””

Rachel answered:

“Yes.””

Eleanor suddenly stood.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Daniel frowned.

“Mom?””

“You can’t go there.””

“Why?””

Her hands shook.

“Because I already checked.””

Daniel stared.

“Checked what?””

“The place where your father hid things.””

Rachel became quiet.

Daniel noticed.

“What is it?””

Eleanor looked terrified.

“I found something.””

“What?””

She reached into her purse.

After everything else, she still had one more envelope.

One she had hidden beneath her belongings.

Daniel took it.

His hands shook as he opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

An old photograph.

His father stood beside a young woman.

A woman Daniel had never seen.

And beside them was a little girl.

Olivia.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten message.

Daniel read it aloud.

“For Daniel. When you finally learn the truth, remember one thing…”

He stopped.

His throat tightened.

“What does it say?”” Marcus asked.

Daniel turned the photo over.

The handwriting belonged to his father.

And the final line changed everything.

“Your mother is protecting you from the person who betrayed us both.””

Daniel slowly looked at Eleanor.

Then at Vanessa.

Because suddenly there was a question nobody had asked.

Not who wanted the house.

Not who changed the medical records.

Not who destroyed the will.

The real question was:

May you like

Who had his father trusted enough to betray him?

And why did Eleanor believe that person was still nearby?
