Chapter 4: The Sister I Never Knew Existed

The words felt impossible.

“Your father’s daughter.””

Daniel stared at his mother.

For several seconds, he didn’t even blink.

The ballroom around him disappeared.

The guests.

The flowers.

The wedding decorations.

Even Vanessa standing only a few feet away.

All of it faded behind one sentence.

“My father had a daughter?””

Eleanor’s lips trembled.

“Yes.””

Daniel shook his head slowly.

“No.””

It wasn’t anger.

It was disbelief.

“No, Mom. Dad and I talked about everything.””

Eleanor looked down.

“No, sweetheart. He told you everything he wanted you to know.””

Daniel stepped back.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

His voice grew louder.

“My father died when I was twenty-one. You’re telling me he had another child and nobody said anything?””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

She looked at him.

“Many times.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

The question hurt her more than anything Vanessa had done.

“Because I was afraid.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Afraid of me?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Eleanor held the envelope tightly.

“Afraid of what it would do to you.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

“Mom, my entire life just changed in a ballroom full of strangers.””

His eyes filled.

“And you’re telling me you were protecting me?””

Eleanor reached toward him.

He stepped away.

The movement was small.

But it crushed her.

Vanessa watched from the side.

For the first time that night, she wasn’t smiling.

She wasn’t defending herself.

She was watching a secret much bigger than her own betrayal unfold.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“Who is she?””

Marcus remained silent.

Eleanor answered.

“Her name is Olivia.””

Daniel frowned.

“Olivia what?””

Eleanor looked away.

“Olivia Bennett.””

Daniel repeated the name quietly.

“Bennett.””

It sounded unfamiliar.

Because it was.

“My father never mentioned her.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Eleanor looked toward the wedding altar.

A place where Daniel had planned to begin his future.

Now it was where his past was being destroyed.

“Because Olivia was born before I met your father.””

Daniel froze.

The room went silent.

Vanessa whispered:

“Before you?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at his mother.

“So Dad cheated?””

Eleanor immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“Then explain.””

She took a breath.

“Your father was twenty-two years old. He was young. He had a relationship before he met me. When the relationship ended, he didn’t know Olivia’s mother was pregnant.””

Daniel looked confused.

“How did he find out?””

“Years later.””

“And?””

Eleanor’s eyes filled.

“He tried to be part of her life.””

Daniel looked down.

“Then why didn’t I know?””

“Because Olivia’s mother refused.””

“Why?””

Eleanor hesitated.

“Because she didn’t trust your father.””

Daniel frowned.

“That doesn’t sound like Dad.””

“It wasn’t.””

Eleanor looked at him.

“Your father spent years trying to make things right.””

She paused.

“But by the time Olivia was old enough to understand, she believed he abandoned her.””

Daniel swallowed.

“So she hated him.””

“Yes.””

“And she hates me?””

Eleanor’s expression changed.

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“She doesn’t hate you.””

“Then why hide her?””

“I didn’t.””

Daniel looked confused.

“You just said you kept this from me.””

“I kept the story from you.””

She looked down.

“But I never stopped searching for her.””

Daniel looked at the document again.

“And now she gets the house?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Yes.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked at Marcus.

“That document gives Olivia ownership?””

Marcus answered carefully.

“It establishes the transfer your father requested.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“So she gets everything?””

Daniel turned toward her.

The anger returned.

“Everything?””

She realized her mistake.

“I didn’t mean it like that.””

“Yes, you did.””

Vanessa looked frustrated.

“I’m just saying this changes things.””

Daniel stared.

“You’re worried about the house.””

“No.””

“You’re worried because you thought my mother’s death would give you security.””

“That is not what happened.””

“But you planned for it.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I never wanted your mother to die.””

Eleanor looked at her.

“Then why did you try to make decisions about my treatment?””

Vanessa looked away.

No answer.

Marcus interrupted.

“There is something else.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

Marcus opened the flash drive case.

“The messages between Vanessa and Gregory Bell were not only about the house.””

Vanessa immediately looked alarmed.

“Stop.””

Daniel noticed.

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know the whole story.””

“Then tell me.””

Vanessa looked around.

The guests were still watching.

She lowered her voice.

“Not here.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Daniel.””

“No more secrets.””

Her face tightened.

“You really want to do this in front of everyone?””

He looked at Eleanor.

“Yes.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.

“Fine.””

She took a breath.

“Gregory was helping me investigate.””

“Investigate what?””

“Your mother.””

Eleanor looked hurt.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Because I thought she was hiding something.””

Daniel stared.

“You thought?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She always protected Olivia.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What does Olivia have to do with my mother?””

Vanessa looked at Eleanor.

“She knows more than she admits.””

Everyone turned.

Eleanor went completely still.

Daniel noticed.

“Mom?””

Eleanor didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

Her silence frightened him.

“What is Vanessa talking about?””

Eleanor looked at the floor.

Then slowly said:

“Olivia is not the only secret your father left behind.””

Daniel’s stomach dropped.

“No.””

Eleanor looked up.

Her eyes were full of regret.

“There is one more thing.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I knew it.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“You knew?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“I found documents.””

“What documents?””

She didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What documents?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Documents that proved your father was planning to change everything.””

Marcus looked surprised.

“What?””

Vanessa ignored him.

“Your father was going to rewrite his estate plan.””

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

“Mom?””

Eleanor’s face turned pale.

“He was.””

The answer stunned everyone.

Daniel stared.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I was waiting.””

“For what?””

Eleanor’s voice broke.

“For the right time.””

Daniel looked around.

There was no right time anymore.

Not after cancer.

Not after betrayal.

Not after a wedding turned into a courtroom.

“Where is the updated will?””

Eleanor hesitated.

Daniel saw it.

“Mom.””

She whispered:

“It disappeared.””

Marcus immediately looked up.

“When?””

Eleanor looked toward Vanessa.

“Three weeks ago.””

Daniel followed her eyes.

Slowly.

His face changed.

“Vanessa.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Where is it?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then why is my mother looking at you?””

Vanessa stepped back.

“I didn’t take anything.””

Daniel watched her.

But before he could answer, Eleanor’s phone suddenly rang.

The sound cut through the room.

Everyone looked at the screen.

Eleanor picked it up.

Her face changed instantly.

Daniel noticed.

“Who is it?””

She didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

Slowly, Eleanor turned the phone around.

The caller name was visible.

Daniel read it.

And froze.

Because the person calling wasn’t Olivia.

It wasn’t Marcus.

It wasn’t the hospital.

It was a name he had never seen before.

But Eleanor recognized it immediately.

And the fear on her face said everything.

“Answer it,” Daniel whispered.

Eleanor shook her head.

“No.””

“Why?””

Her voice trembled.

“Because the last time this person called…”

She stopped.

Daniel stared.

“The last time what happened?””

Eleanor looked at the phone as it continued ringing.

Then she said:

“The last time this person called, your father was still alive.””

The entire ballroom went silent.

Daniel slowly reached for the phone.

And when he answered, a woman’s voice came through.

“Eleanor?””

Daniel held his breath.

The woman continued:

“You need to tell Daniel the truth before Vanessa finds the rest of the documents.””

Daniel’s eyes moved toward Vanessa.

Vanessa’s face had gone completely white.

The woman on the phone whispered one final sentence.

“Because Vanessa isn’t looking for the will.””

May you like

A pause.

“She’s looking for the evidence that proves she destroyed it.””
