Chapter 2: The Lie That Separated Them

Adrian Whitmore remained on the floor beside Mia.

He didn’t care about the wine stain.

He didn’t care about his suit.

He didn’t care about the silence filling the kitchen.

All he could see was the woman he had spent a year trying to forget.

The woman he was told walked away from him.

The woman he was told chose a different life.

The woman standing in front of him with tears in her eyes, wearing a green maid uniform instead of the dress he remembered.

Mia Carter.

His Mia.

Or at least, that was what his heart was screaming.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Adrian, I can explain.””

Her voice sounded different now.

Not confident.

Not cruel.

Careful.

Adrian slowly turned his head toward her.

The look on his face made Vanessa stop.

Because she had seen Adrian angry before.

But she had never seen him look disappointed.

And disappointment was worse.

“Explain what?”” he asked.

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Mia looked between them, confused.

She had imagined seeing Adrian again.

She had imagined anger.

Maybe even hatred.

But she had never imagined him looking at Vanessa like he no longer knew who she was.

“I thought she left,” Adrian said quietly.

The words hung in the air.

Vanessa forced a laugh.

“Adrian, please. This is ridiculous. She’s your employee.””

Mia flinched.

Employee.

A simple word.

But Vanessa said it like it erased everything.

Like Mia was nothing more than a uniform and a paycheck.

Adrian noticed.

He noticed everything now.

The way Mia avoided eye contact.

The way her shoulders stayed tense.

The way she looked like she was waiting to be blamed.

He stood slowly.

“You told me she left.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“Because she did.””

“No.””

Adrian shook his head.

“No, you told me she left me.””

The security guard near the doorway remained silent.

But his eyes moved between them.

He knew something had changed.

Everybody did.

Mia wiped her face quickly.

“I should go.””

Adrian looked at her.

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

Mia stopped.

“I don’t want to cause problems.””

“You’re not causing problems.””

His voice softened.

“You’re the person who was hurt.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Adrian, you don’t know what you’re talking about.””

He looked at her.

“Then help me understand.””

A pause.

“You told me Mia packed her things.””

Vanessa said nothing.

“You told me she left without saying goodbye.””

Still nothing.

“You told me she didn’t love me enough to stay.””

Mia’s eyes widened.

Because those words were familiar.

Too familiar.

She remembered that night.

She remembered Adrian’s silence.

She remembered trying to reach him.

Trying to understand why her calls stopped connecting.

Why every message went unanswered.

She remembered showing up at his old apartment and finding Vanessa there.

Vanessa, standing in the doorway.

Vanessa, telling her Adrian didn’t want to see her.

Vanessa, saying he had moved on.

But Mia never knew the other side of the story.

She never knew what Adrian had been told.

Adrian looked at Mia.

“Is that what happened?””

Mia stared at him.

Her voice shook.

“No.””

One word.

But it carried a year of pain.

“No, Adrian.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Mia—”

“No.””

Mia stood up slowly.

Her knees hurt from the floor.

Her hands shook.

But something inside her had changed.

Maybe it was seeing Adrian again.

Maybe it was finally realizing she didn’t have to stay quiet anymore.

“I didn’t leave you.””

Adrian looked like the air had been taken from his lungs.

“What?””

Mia swallowed.

“I waited for you.””

The room became silent.

“I called you.””

Her voice cracked.

“I came to your apartment.””

Adrian stared at her.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because you weren’t there.””

Mia’s face fell.

“Yes, I was.””

The two of them stood there, separated by a year of lies.

Vanessa stepped between them.

“This is insane.””

Adrian looked at her.

“Why would she lie?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Only for a second.

But Adrian saw it.

Mia saw it.

The security guard saw it.

That tiny moment.

That tiny pause.

The kind that exposed the truth before words ever could.

Adrian’s grip tightened around the bouquet of yellow flowers.

“Vanessa.””

She looked away.

“Mia disappeared.””

“No,” Mia whispered.

Vanessa looked at her.

“Yes, you did.””

The accusation was so familiar that Mia almost believed it.

Almost.

But Adrian was watching.

And for the first time, someone was actually looking at the evidence in front of him.

Not the story Vanessa created.

The reality.

Mia’s eyes filled again.

“I didn’t disappear.””

She looked at Adrian.

“You did.””

The words broke something.

Adrian stepped back.

Because suddenly he remembered every unanswered message.

Every night he waited.

Every morning he convinced himself he had to move on.

He remembered Vanessa being there.

Always there.

Offering comfort.

Offering explanations.

Offering herself.

His face slowly changed.

“Vanessa…”

She looked nervous now.

Really nervous.

Adrian glanced down at the flowers in his hand.

The yellow petals trembled slightly.

He had bought them for Vanessa.

For their upcoming wedding.

A wedding built on a story that suddenly felt like it was collapsing.

He looked back at Mia.

The woman he was told abandoned him.

The woman now standing in front of him, broken but telling the truth.

Then he turned toward Vanessa.

Still holding Mia’s hand, he said the words that made Vanessa’s entire expression change.

“You said she left me.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

For the first time, she had no perfect answer.

No clever excuse.

No smile.

Only fear.

May you like

Because Adrian was finally asking the question she had spent a year avoiding.

And whatever came next would reveal everything.
