Chapter 4: The Wedding Built on a Lie

Adrian left the kitchen without saying another word.

Not because he didn’t care.

Because he cared too much.

The mansion that had once felt like a dream now felt like a place filled with ghosts.

Every hallway carried memories.

Every room held moments he now questioned.

Vanessa followed behind him.

“Adrian, please listen to me.””

He stopped near the staircase.

But he didn’t turn around.

“How long?””

Vanessa froze.

“What?””

“How long were you planning to keep this from me?””

Her silence answered.

Adrian slowly faced her.

“How long were you going to let me believe she abandoned me?””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You weren’t happy with her.””

“That’s not your decision.””

“You don’t understand.””

“No, I don’t.””

His voice sharpened.

“I don’t understand how someone who claimed to love me could destroy another person’s life just to get what she wanted.””

Vanessa’s expression cracked.

“I loved you.””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

The word hit harder than anything else.

“You loved winning.””

Vanessa stared at him.

For the first time, she looked small.

“I was there for you.””

“Yes.””

Adrian nodded.

“You were.””

He looked away.

“And I thought that meant something.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

Real tears or not, Adrian couldn’t tell anymore.

“I saw what happened between you and Mia,” she whispered.

“I saw how much she hurt you.””

“No.””

Adrian’s voice was quiet.

“You saw an opportunity.””

Vanessa looked away.

Because deep down, she knew he was right.

She had watched Mia and Adrian build something real.

Something effortless.

Something she could not create.

And Vanessa hated that.

She had everything people wanted.

Money.

Beauty.

Status.

A name that opened doors.

But Mia had the one thing Vanessa couldn’t buy.

Adrian’s heart.

So Vanessa convinced herself she wasn’t stealing.

She was taking what should have been hers.

“I didn’t think it would go this far,” Vanessa whispered.

Adrian stared at her.

“You ruined a year of our lives.””

“I thought eventually you’d forget her.””

His face changed.

Because that was the truth.

Not a misunderstanding.

Not a mistake.

A plan.

Mia stood quietly at the edge of the hallway.

She hadn’t meant to listen.

But she heard enough.

She heard the confession hidden inside Vanessa’s words.

And it hurt.

Not because she was surprised.

But because some part of her had hoped there was another explanation.

Something less cruel.

Something that would make the pain make sense.

Adrian noticed her.

“Mia.””

She looked at him.

“I should leave.””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

But this time, Mia shook her head.

“I can’t stay here.””

Adrian walked toward her.

“You don’t have to work for her anymore.””

Mia looked down.

“It’s not that simple.””

“Why?””

“Because leaving means admitting she won.””

Adrian stopped.

Mia wiped her tears.

“She wanted me to feel small.””

Her voice became stronger.

“She wanted me to believe I had no power.””

She looked back at Vanessa.

“But I’m not going to spend my life running from someone like her.””

Adrian watched her carefully.

This wasn’t the same woman he remembered.

The Mia he knew was kind.

Warm.

Patient.

But this Mia had survived something.

And survival had changed her.

Vanessa looked between them.

“You think this changes everything?””

Adrian turned.

“What?””

She laughed softly.

“You think finding out I lied means you can just go back?””

Nobody answered.

Because that was the question nobody wanted to admit.

Things didn’t go back.

Not after betrayal.

Not after a year apart.

Not after losing trust.

Mia looked at Adrian.

And Adrian looked at her.

There was love there.

Still.

But there was also pain.

Questions.

Things they had to rebuild.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“The wedding is in two weeks.””

Adrian’s face hardened.

“There won’t be a wedding.””

The words landed.

Vanessa stared at him.

“You don’t mean that.””

“I do.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice became desperate.

“You can’t throw everything away because of her.””

Adrian looked at Mia.

Then back at Vanessa.

“This was never about choosing her over you.””

A pause.

“This is about finally choosing the truth.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with fear.

Because she realized something.

She hadn’t just lost Adrian.

She had lost control of the story.

And somewhere inside that mansion, surrounded by expensive furniture and beautiful things, Vanessa Whitmore finally understood the one thing money couldn’t fix.

May you like

The truth had arrived.

And it was not leaving.
