Chapter 5: The Secrets in the Silence

For the first time in a year, Mia Carter woke up without feeling like she was running.

But peace felt strange.

Almost uncomfortable.

She sat on the edge of the small bed in the apartment she rented above an old beauty salon on the east side of town. The room was simple. A dresser with a cracked mirror.

A small lamp beside the bed. A stack of books she hadn’t touched in months.

It wasn’t the kind of place she dreamed about.

But it was hers.

And after everything that happened, that mattered.

She stared at her reflection.

The woman looking back at her didn’t look broken anymore.

Tired, yes.

Confused, definitely.

But not broken.

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand.

She looked down.

Adrian.

For a moment, she just watched his name glow on the screen.

A year ago, she would have answered before the first ring ended.

Now, she hesitated.

Not because she didn’t want to hear his voice.

Because she did.

Too much.

Finally, she answered.

“Hello?””

“Mia.””

His voice immediately brought back memories.

Good ones.

Painful ones.

“Hey.””

There was a pause.

Neither of them knew how to begin.

They had spent a year imagining this conversation.

Neither had imagined how difficult it would actually be.

“I wanted to make sure you were okay,” Adrian said.

Mia looked around her apartment.

“I’m okay.””

“You don’t sound okay.””

She smiled faintly.

“You always knew when I was lying.””

“Yeah.””

His voice softened.

“I should have known when someone else was lying too.””

The guilt in his words was heavy.

Mia closed her eyes.

“Adrian…”

“I’m sorry.””

Two words.

Simple.

But they carried everything.

“I’m sorry I believed her.””

Mia didn’t respond.

“I’m sorry I didn’t fight harder.””

She looked down.

The truth was, part of her had wanted him to say that.

Wanted him to admit that losing her wasn’t just something that happened.

That he had choices too.

But hearing it didn’t magically erase the pain.

“I spent months wondering what I did wrong,” she whispered.

Adrian was quiet.

“I thought maybe I wasn’t enough.””

“Mia.””

“I know that sounds stupid.””

“It doesn’t.””

Her voice cracked.

“I thought if I was better, if I had tried harder, maybe you wouldn’t have let me go.””

Adrian breathed out slowly.

“I never let you go.””

The words hurt.

Because they sounded beautiful.

But they were also late.

Mia looked out the window.

“Someone did.””

Neither of them spoke.

Because they both knew who she meant.

Finally Adrian said, “I need to tell you something.””

“What?””

“I found something.””

Mia frowned.

“What kind of something?””

“Proof.””

Her heart shifted.

“Proof of what?””

“Of what Vanessa did.””

Mia sat up straighter.

“What did you find?””

After leaving the mansion the night before, Adrian had gone through old records, messages, and accounts.

Things he had ignored.

Things he never thought he needed to question.

And the more he looked, the more the story changed.

“Vanessa didn’t just lie about you coming to the house,” he said.

Mia’s stomach tightened.

“What else?””

“She deleted messages.””

Mia went silent.

“What?””

“My phone records showed messages from your number that I never received.””

Her hand covered her mouth.

“She blocked them.””

Adrian’s voice became quieter.

“She made it look like you stopped trying.””

Mia felt anger rise.

Not the old pain.

Something different.

Something stronger.

“She wanted us to hate each other.””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“And I let her.””

Mia didn’t answer.

Because there was no easy way to comfort someone who had finally realized they helped create the damage.

Then Adrian said something that made her heart stop.

“There’s more.””

“What?””

“She had help.””

Mia froze.

“Help from who?””

Adrian hesitated.

And that hesitation worried her.

“Adrian?””

“I don’t know yet.””

The uncertainty in his voice bothered her.

Because Vanessa was cruel.

But cruelty usually had a reason.

A person who planned something this carefully rarely worked alone.

Later that afternoon, Adrian returned to the mansion.

Not as Vanessa’s fiancé.

Not as the man preparing for a wedding.

He walked through the front door as someone searching for answers.

Vanessa was waiting.

She looked different.

Less confident.

More desperate.

“You came back.””

Adrian looked around.

“I needed documents.””

“About what?””

“About us.””

Her face tightened.

“There is no us anymore?””

He didn’t answer.

That hurt her.

“Adrian.””

He placed a folder on the table.

Inside were copies of emails, messages, and records.

Vanessa stared.

“You went through my things?””

“I looked for the truth.””

Her expression changed.

“You always thought you were better than me.””

Adrian frowned.

“What?””

“You had this idea that you were the good person. The loyal person. The person who would never hurt anyone.””

She laughed bitterly.

“But you hurt me too.””

Adrian stared at her.

“I never lied to you.””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“You just loved her more.””

The words were meant to hurt.

And they did.

Because they were partially true.

But Adrian refused to let that become an excuse.

“Love doesn’t justify what you did.””

Vanessa looked away.

Then she whispered:

“You don’t know everything.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

She said nothing.

“Vanessa.””

Her silence returned.

The same silence that had hidden everything.

But this time Adrian recognized it.

“You’re still protecting someone.””

Her eyes flickered.

Only for a second.

But he saw it.

Someone else.

May you like

Someone behind the lies.

And suddenly the mystery became bigger than Vanessa.
