Chapter 7: The Family That Betrayed Him
Adrian stared at the photograph for nearly a full minute.
He didn’t blink.
He didn’t speak.
He just looked at the evidence in his hand like his mind was refusing to accept what his eyes were seeing.
Ethan.
His brother.
The person who taught him how to ride a bike.
The person who stood beside him after their father died.
The person who told him family was the only thing that could never be replaced.
And Vanessa.
The woman he was supposed to marry.
Standing together.
Smiling.
Like they had been keeping a secret long before Mia ever became part of their story.
Mia watched the pain move across Adrian’s face.
Not anger.
Not yet.
Something deeper.
Betrayal had a different kind of wound.
It didn’t come from enemies.
It came from people who knew exactly where to hurt you.
“Adrian,” Mia whispered.
He finally looked up.
“I trusted them.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You don’t understand.””
Mia stayed quiet.
Because she did understand.
Maybe not his money.
Maybe not his family name.
Maybe not the world he came from.
But she understood what it felt like to look at someone you loved and realize they had been hurting you the whole time.
“I spent my whole life defending Ethan,” Adrian continued.
“He was always the one who had my back.””
Mia looked at the photograph.
“Maybe he wanted you to believe that.””
Adrian shook his head.
“I don’t know what’s real anymore.””
That sentence hurt Mia.
Because she remembered feeling the exact same way.
After Vanessa took everything from her, Mia stopped trusting her own memories.
She questioned every conversation.
Every moment.
Every person.
But now she knew something.
The truth didn’t always feel comforting when it arrived.
Sometimes it destroyed everything you thought you knew.
Adrian folded the photograph and placed it back inside the envelope.
“We need to find out why.””
Mia looked at him.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
“You’re talking about your brother.””
“I know.””
“And Vanessa.””
“I know.””
His jaw tightened.
“But if they did this to us, I need to know how far it went.””
Mia nodded slowly.
“Then we find out.””
For the first time in a long time, Adrian saw the woman he remembered.
Not the woman from the kitchen floor.
Not the woman Vanessa tried to make invisible.
The woman who stood beside him when things got difficult.
The woman who fought.
Later that evening, Adrian went to the Whitmore family office.
It was a place he had avoided since discovering the truth.
The building had always represented success.
Generations of hard work.
A family legacy.
Now it felt like a crime scene.
Ethan was sitting behind the large wooden desk when Adrian walked in.
He looked surprised.
“Adrian.””
No guilt.
No fear.
Just surprise.
That almost made Adrian angry.
“How long?””
Ethan frowned.
“How long what?””
Adrian placed the photograph on the desk.
The color left Ethan’s face.
Only for a second.
But it happened.
And Adrian saw it.
“That’s not what you think.””
Adrian laughed once.
A cold, humorless sound.
“Everybody says that when they get caught.””
Ethan stood.
“Listen to me.””
“No.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“You listen.””
The room became tense.
“I spent a year thinking Mia abandoned me.””
Ethan looked away.
Adrian noticed.
“You knew.””
Silence.
“You knew she didn’t leave.””
Ethan didn’t answer.
And that was enough.
Adrian felt something inside him break.
“How could you?””
Ethan sighed.
“Because I was trying to protect you.””
“Protect me?””
Adrian stared at him.
“You destroyed my life.””
“I saved you from making a mistake.””
The words shocked him.
“What?””
Ethan walked around the desk.
“Mia was never going to fit into our world.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
There it was.
The arrogance.
The belief that money and status gave him permission to decide someone’s worth.
“You mean she wasn’t rich enough.””
Ethan didn’t respond.
“You mean she wasn’t useful enough.””
“That’s not what I said.””
“It’s exactly what you meant.””
Ethan looked frustrated.
“You were throwing everything away.””
“For love?””
“Yes.””
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
His voice lowered.
“You were afraid I would choose something you couldn’t control.””
Ethan’s face hardened.
“You don’t understand how this family works.””
Adrian stared at him.
“No. I finally do.””
The brothers stood there, separated by years of history.
But in that moment, they felt like strangers.
“Vanessa was supposed to make you happy,” Ethan said.
Adrian looked disgusted.
“She was supposed to make me profitable.””
Ethan stayed silent.
That silence confirmed everything.
The engagement.
The wedding plans.
The business connections.
It was never only about love.
It was about power.
Adrian left without another word.
But before he reached the door, Ethan spoke.
“You really think Mia is innocent?””
Adrian stopped.
Slowly, he turned around.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan smiled slightly.
And Adrian hated that smile.
“You don’t know everything about her either.””
Those words followed Adrian long after he left.
Because he had learned one thing.
The people who lied to him always mixed truth with deception.
Enough truth to make the lie believable.
Enough lies to hide the truth.
May you like
And now he had to find out if Ethan was revealing a secret…
Or creating a new trap.
