Chapter 3: The Truth Behind the Locked Door
Vanessa had always been good at controlling a room.
She knew exactly when to smile.
Exactly when to compliment someone.
Exactly when to lower her voice and make people lean closer.
For years, she had built her entire life around making sure nobody saw what was underneath.
But standing in that kitchen, with Adrian holding Mia’s hand, Vanessa felt something she wasn’t used to feeling.
Powerless.
“Adrian,” Vanessa said carefully, “you’re letting your emotions cloud your judgment.””
Mia almost laughed.
Almost.
Because that was Vanessa’s favorite trick.
Make someone question what they saw.
Make someone doubt what they felt.
Make the truth sound unreasonable.
But Adrian didn’t move.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
And that scared Vanessa more than yelling would have.
“No, I think I’ve been letting you tell me what to believe for too long.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“Mia is manipulating you.””
Mia looked at her.
The accusation was almost unbelievable.
After everything Vanessa had done, she still had the nerve to say that.
Adrian noticed the way Mia reacted.
The hurt.
The disbelief.
The exhaustion.
He looked at Vanessa.
“Why is she working here?””
Vanessa blinked.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
His eyes moved around the kitchen.
“The woman you claim abandoned me somehow ended up cleaning your house?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“She needed work.””
“And you hired her?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The question hung there.
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
Because there was no easy answer.
Adrian stepped closer.
“You hated her.””
“I don’t hate her.””
“You just humiliated her?””
Vanessa looked away.
“It was a misunderstanding.””
Mia finally spoke.
“No, it wasn’t.””
Both of them looked at her.
Mia took a breath.
Her voice was shaky, but she kept going.
“It wasn’t the first time.””
Adrian’s face changed.
“What do you mean?””
Mia looked down at her hands.
Hands that had spent months working jobs she never imagined she would take.
Hands that had learned how to hide pain.
“She knew who I was when she hired me.””
Vanessa’s eyes widened slightly.
“Mia.””
“No.””
Mia looked directly at her.
“I’m done being quiet.””
The room became still.
Adrian watched her.
Not as someone from his past.
Not as someone he lost.
But as someone standing up for herself.
“She knew,” Mia continued.
“She knew exactly who I was.””
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“Is that true?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
And that was answer enough.
Mia swallowed.
“She told me if I wanted the job, I needed to understand my place.””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“What place?””
Mia looked around the kitchen.
“The place where I stayed silent.””
Vanessa scoffed.
“That is ridiculous.””
“No,” Mia said softly.
“What’s ridiculous is that you thought nobody would ever find out.””
Adrian turned toward Vanessa.
“What else did you lie about?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.
Not sadness.
Not regret.
Anger.
“You really want to do this?””
Adrian stared at her.
“Yes.””
For a moment, Vanessa looked like she was deciding whether to continue pretending.
Then she smiled.
A cold, bitter smile.
“Fine.””
Mia felt her stomach tighten.
Because she knew that smile.
Vanessa only smiled like that when she believed she still had control.
“You want the truth?”” Vanessa asked.
Adrian nodded.
“Give me the truth.””
Vanessa looked at Mia.
Then back at Adrian.
“Mia wasn’t exactly innocent.””
Mia went still.
There it was.
The next lie.
Adrian noticed.
“Mia?””
Mia shook her head.
“I don’t even know what she’s about to say.””
Vanessa walked slowly toward the counter.
“She never told you everything about why she disappeared.””
Adrian frowned.
“She didn’t disappear.””
“You don’t know that.””
“I know she says she didn’t.””
Vanessa leaned forward.
“And you believe her?””
The question bothered Adrian.
Not because he doubted Mia.
But because he realized something painful.
He had believed Vanessa without asking.
He had accepted one version of events because it was easier than facing the possibility that the person comforting him was the person hurting him.
Mia looked at him.
“I tried to reach you.””
Adrian’s eyes softened.
“I know.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“You don’t.””
She stepped closer.
“I called you for three days.””
Adrian looked confused.
“I never got those calls.””
“I left messages.””
“I never got them.””
“I emailed you.””
Nothing.
“I came to your apartment.””
His face changed.
“Someone told me you weren’t there.””
Mia looked at Vanessa.
And Vanessa looked away.
That was the moment Adrian knew.
Not everything.
But enough.
He had spent a year blaming the wrong person.
A sound came from the hallway.
The security guard shifted.
Adrian looked over.
“You saw something.””
The guard immediately looked down.
“Sir, I don’t get involved.””
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“You’re involved.””
The man stayed silent.
Because silence had protected him.
But now that silence had a cost.
Mia looked at him.
“Please.””
Her voice was gentle.
Not demanding.
Just tired.
The security guard finally looked up.
“I saw Miss Carter come here that night.””
Vanessa’s face changed instantly.
“Don’t.””
The guard stopped.
Adrian noticed.
“Continue.””
The man swallowed.
“She came to the house.””
“When?””
“The night you two broke up.””
Adrian froze.
Mia covered her mouth.
Because someone was finally saying it.
Someone else knew.
“She was crying,” the guard continued.
“She kept saying she needed to talk to you.””
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“And?””
The guard hesitated.
“Mrs. Whitmore told me not to let her inside.””
The silence afterward felt like an explosion.
Vanessa’s face lost all color.
Adrian stared at her.
“You told me she never came.””
Vanessa’s breathing changed.
“Adrian, I can explain.””
But this time, he didn’t look confused.
He looked hurt.
Deeply hurt.
Because the truth wasn’t just that Vanessa had lied.
It was that she had taken something from him.
A choice.
A chance.
A year of his life.
Mia watched Adrian process the betrayal.
May you like
And for the first time, she realized something.
She wasn’t the only one who had been broken.
