Chapter 6: The Person Behind the Betrayal
Mia never expected Adrian to show up at her apartment.
Especially not carrying the same yellow flowers from the day everything fell apart.
When she opened the door and saw him standing there, she almost forgot how to breathe.
“You remembered.””
Adrian looked down at the flowers.
“I never forgot.””
That answer was dangerous.
Because Mia wanted to believe it.
She wanted to believe that somewhere inside all the confusion and hurt, what they had was still real.
But trust was something different.
Trust had to be rebuilt.
She stepped aside.
“Come in.””
Adrian entered slowly.
The apartment was quiet.
Small.
Honest.
Nothing like the mansion.
And somehow, that made him feel more comfortable.
“I found out something else.””
Mia looked concerned.
“What?””
He sat down.
“Vanessa wasn’t acting alone.””
Mia crossed her arms.
“Who helped her?””
“I’m trying to find out.””
“Trying?””
Adrian looked at her.
“There are things I don’t remember.””
That surprised her.
“What do you mean?””
He looked down.
“Before we broke up, I started getting strange information.””
Mia frowned.
“Like what?””
“People telling me you were unhappy.””
She shook her head.
“I wasn’t.””
“I know that now.””
“But who told you?””
Adrian was quiet.
Then he said:
“My brother.””
Mia froze.
“Ethan?””
Adrian nodded.
Ethan Whitmore.
His older brother.
The person Adrian had trusted almost his entire life.
The person who had helped manage the family business.
The person who always claimed to protect him.
Mia sat down slowly.
“Why would he do that?””
“I don’t know.””
Adrian rubbed his face.
“But yesterday, I found emails between him and Vanessa.””
Mia stared.
“What kind of emails?””
“Emails about keeping us apart.””
The room went silent.
Because suddenly Vanessa’s actions had a bigger purpose.
This wasn’t only jealousy.
It was strategy.
Mia looked at Adrian.
“What did they want?””
Adrian looked away.
“The family company.””
Mia understood immediately.
The Whitmore family name was powerful.
Their business was worth millions.
And Adrian had always been the person expected to lead it.
“If you married Vanessa,” Mia said slowly, “Ethan would benefit.””
Adrian nodded.
“He wanted me distracted.””
“And Vanessa wanted you.””
A painful smile crossed Adrian’s face.
“Looks like both of them got what they wanted for a while.””
Mia reached over and touched his hand.
Not because everything was fixed.
Not because the past disappeared.
But because she understood what it felt like to discover betrayal from someone you trusted.
“You were surrounded by people who were lying to you.””
Adrian looked at her.
“So were you.””
That was the hardest part.
They were both victims of the same lie.
Just from different sides.
A knock interrupted them.
Both froze.
Adrian looked toward the door.
“I wasn’t expecting anyone.””
Mia stood.
“Neither was I.””
Another knock.
Louder.
Adrian moved closer.
“Mia, stay behind me.””
She almost smiled.
A year ago, those words would have made her feel safe.
Now they reminded her how much had changed.
Adrian opened the door.
Nobody was there.
Only an envelope sitting on the floor.
No name.
No address.
Just a single sentence written on the front.
*Stop digging.*
Mia stared at it.
Adrian picked it up.
His face became serious.
“This was meant for me.””
She looked at him.
“How do you know?””
“Because whoever sent this knows what I’m looking for.””
Adrian opened the envelope carefully.
Inside was one photograph.
Mia couldn’t see it clearly at first.
Then Adrian turned it toward her.
And her entire body went cold.
It was a picture of Vanessa.
And Ethan.
Together.
Before Adrian and Vanessa were even engaged.
Mia looked at Adrian.
“This goes deeper than we thought.””
Adrian stared at the photograph.
For the first time, he wasn’t just trying to fix the past.
He was preparing for a fight.
May you like
Because the people who destroyed their lives weren’t finished.
And now they knew Adrian was coming for the truth.
