Chapter 8: The Truth Mia Never Told
Mia knew something was wrong the moment Adrian arrived.
He didn’t call.
He didn’t text.
He just appeared outside her apartment with a look on his face she had never seen before.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Fear.
“Adrian?””
He stepped inside.
“I talked to Ethan.””
Mia immediately understood.
“And?””
“He knew.””
Her stomach dropped.
“He knew everything.””
Mia sat down.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Adrian said the words she didn’t expect.
“He said I don’t know everything about you.””
Mia looked up.
The silence was small.
But Adrian noticed it.
That tiny pause.
The same kind of pause Vanessa had.
His expression changed.
“Mia.””
She looked away.
“What?””
“What didn’t you tell me?””
The question hurt.
Not because it was unfair.
Because she knew it was coming.
She had spent a year hiding something.
Not because she wanted to lie.
Because she was ashamed.
“I was waiting for the right time.””
Adrian’s voice softened.
“Tell me now.””
Mia took a deep breath.
“The night I came to your apartment…”
She stopped.
Adrian listened.
“I wasn’t only there to talk.””
“What do you mean?””
Mia looked down.
“I found Vanessa there.””
Adrian froze.
“You never told me that.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
“Because she made me feel like I had already lost.””
Mia’s eyes filled.
“She told me you were done with me.””
Adrian looked hurt.
“I would never say that.””
“I know that now.””
She swallowed.
“But back then, I didn’t.””
She explained everything.
How Vanessa opened the door.
How she acted like she belonged there.
How she told Mia Adrian had chosen a different future.
And then came the part Mia hated.
“She showed me something.””
“What?””
Mia hesitated.
“A message.””
Adrian frowned.
“What message?””
“She showed me a text that looked like it came from you.””
His face changed.
“What did it say?””
Mia closed her eyes.
“That you needed space.””
Adrian shook his head immediately.
“I never sent that.””
“I know.””
“But you believed it.””
“I was heartbroken.””
The words were quiet.
“I thought the person I loved was telling me he didn’t want me anymore.””
Adrian looked away.
Because suddenly he understood.
They had both been manipulated by the same people.
Both victims.
Both isolated.
Both made to believe the other person gave up.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
Mia nodded.
“I know.””
Then Adrian noticed something.
“You said it looked like the message came from me.””
Mia looked confused.
“Yes.””
“Not that it was from me.””
She went still.
Because that distinction mattered.
Adrian stood.
“Vanessa and Ethan didn’t just lie.””
He looked at the photograph on the table.
“They created evidence.””
Mia’s eyes widened.
“They planned everything.””
A silence filled the apartment.
Then Adrian’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
Nobody spoke.
Then a voice came through.
Distorted.
Hidden.
“You should have stayed away.””
Adrian’s face changed.
“Who is this?””
The voice ignored him.
“You don’t know what Mia did before she came into your life.””
Mia looked at him.
The caller continued.
“You’re looking for betrayal?””
A pause.
“Start with her.””
The call ended.
Adrian stared at the phone.
Mia stared back.
And for the first time since they reunited, something new entered the room.
Doubt.
Not because Adrian stopped believing her.
But because someone had just opened another door.
A door leading into Mia’s past.
A past she had never talked about.
May you like
And whatever was behind it…
Could change everything.
