Chapter 11: The Evidence Nobody Was Supposed To Find
The address burned into my mind.
A place nobody wanted me to see.
A place my father trusted enough to hide his final evidence.
A place that survived twenty years of secrets.
I looked at Richard.
“You know where this is.””
He didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
“Take me there.””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“No.””
I turned toward him.
“Why?””
“Because if your father hid something there, he had a reason.””
I stared at him.
“Yes.””
I held up the page.
“He had a reason for everything.””
My voice became colder.
“And apparently everyone except me knew what those reasons were.””
Nobody argued.
Because nobody could.
I grabbed my coat.
Vanessa followed.
“Marcus.””
I stopped.
“What?””
She hesitated.
“I’m coming with you.””
I almost refused.
Almost.
But then I remembered something.
For all her lies, Vanessa was connected to this.
She knew things none of us knew.
“You’re coming because you want to help?””
She looked at me.
“I’m coming because I owe you the truth.””
I studied her face.
For the first time, I believed she meant it.
Not because I trusted her.
But because she looked exhausted.
Like carrying the secret had finally become heavier than revealing it.
My mother stepped forward.
“Marcus, please be careful.””
I looked at her.
The words felt strange.
Because for years, she was the person I believed would always protect me.
Now I wondered how much protection had actually been control.
“I need honesty from you.””
Her eyes filled.
“You’ll have it.””
I nodded.
“I hope so.””
An hour later, Vanessa and I stood outside an abandoned building on the edge of the city.
It was an old warehouse.
Broken windows.
Rusting metal doors.
A place nobody would visit unless they were looking for something.
Richard had refused to come.
That worried me more than if he had followed.
The man who claimed to have protected my father was suddenly afraid of the place where my father hid his truth.
Vanessa looked at the building.
“My father brought me here once.””
I looked at her.
“You knew about this place?””
“Not this part.””
She swallowed.
“I knew he kept records.””
“About your family?””
“Yes.””
I looked at the warehouse.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked down.
“Because I was ashamed.””
I didn’t respond.
Because I understood shame.
But I also understood consequences.
We entered through a broken side door.
Inside, dust covered everything.
Old equipment.
Empty shelves.
A forgotten place.
Vanessa walked slowly.
“It feels like he just left.””
I looked at her.
“Your father?””
She nodded.
I noticed something.
She wasn’t defending him.
She wasn’t making excuses.
She was grieving.
Maybe she had been grieving for years.
We searched the building.
Nothing.
For almost an hour.
Then I noticed something.
A wall panel.
Different from the others.
I touched it.
It moved.
Behind it was a small metal box.
My heart started racing.
“Vanessa.””
She came closer.
The box had a lock.
But not a normal one.
A fingerprint scanner.
I frowned.
“My father?””
“No.””
Vanessa looked at it carefully.
“Your father’s technology.””
I pressed my thumb against it.
Nothing.
Again.
Nothing.
Then Vanessa noticed something.
“Marcus.””
She pointed.
There was a small mark beside the scanner.
A letter.
A single word.
*Blood.*
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I think it means it needs family.””
I pressed my thumb again.
The scanner flashed.
Green.
The box opened.
Inside was a small recorder.
A flash drive.
And one photograph.
I picked up the photograph first.
My hands froze.
It showed my father.
My mother.
Richard.
Vanessa’s father.
And one more person.
A person whose face had been scratched out.
On the back of the photo, my father had written:
*The only person I trusted who betrayed me.*
Vanessa picked up the recorder.
There was one file.
One date.
The day before my father died.
She pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then my father’s voice.
Older.
Tired.
Afraid.
“Marcus… if you’re hearing this, then I failed to protect you.””
My chest tightened.
The recording continued.
“I need you to know the truth about the person who betrayed me.””
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
The voice became clearer.
“The person who destroyed our family…”
A pause.
A breath.
May you like
Then my father said a name.
A name that made Vanessa scream.
