Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Seal
The yellow envelope sat on the dining table between us like a loaded weapon.
No one touched it.
No one breathed normally.
Even the house seemed different.
The same mansion where we celebrated birthdays and holidays suddenly felt like a courtroom.
My mother stood beside the table with her hands folded together.
Vanessa remained near the sofa.
She had stopped pretending.
The confidence was gone.
The arrogance was gone.
All that remained was fear.
I looked at my wife.
“Tell me why you’re scared.””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her eyes moved toward the envelope.
Then back to me.
“Because you don’t know the whole story.””
I stared at her.
“Then tell me.””
She shook her head.
“It’s not that simple.””
I laughed quietly.
“Funny. You didn’t seem to have a problem making my mother leave.””
Her face tightened.
“That was different.””
“How?””
She looked away.
I turned to Gloria.
“Mom, why did you have this?””
My mother sat down slowly.
For a few seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“Because I promised someone I would protect you.””
My chest tightened.
“Who?””
She looked at the envelope.
“Someone who knew Vanessa before you did.””
The room went silent.
I felt like the floor moved beneath me.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Gloria, stop.””
My head snapped toward her.
“Why are you telling my mother to stop?””
“Because she’s confused.””
My mother looked up.
“No, Vanessa. I’m not confused.””
The way she said it made Vanessa freeze.
My mother continued.
“I stayed quiet because I wanted my son to be happy.””
I looked between them.
“Happy?””
Gloria nodded.
“I thought if I said anything, I would destroy your marriage.””
My hands curled into fists.
“So you knew something?””
She looked down.
“For years.””
Vanessa’s voice became sharper.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
My mother looked at her.
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
That was the first time I saw Vanessa lose control.
She walked toward the table.
“Give me the envelope.””
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
My mother pulled it closer.
Vanessa stopped.
“Marcus, you need to listen to me.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because once you open that, nothing goes back to normal.””
I stared at her.
“Maybe normal was the problem.””
The words hurt her.
I saw it.
But I didn’t take them back.
Because all night, I had watched my mother cry.
I had watched my wife demand she leave.
And now I was finally seeing the truth.
Vanessa had not been surprised by the envelope.
She had been afraid of it.
“Where did you get this?”” I asked.
Gloria touched the sealed paper gently.
“It was given to me years ago.””
“By who?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation scared me.
“Mom.””
She looked at me.
Then she said:
“By your father.””
My heart stopped.
My father had been gone for years.
A man I barely remembered except through old photographs and stories.
“You’re saying Dad wrote this?””
Gloria nodded.
“Yes.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
She looked almost angry.
Not sad.
Not shocked.
Angry.
“You should have destroyed it.””
The words slipped out before she could stop them.
Everyone froze.
I slowly turned toward her.
“What did you just say?””
Vanessa realized her mistake.
“I didn’t mean—”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You said I should have destroyed it.””
She looked at the envelope.
Then at me.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
My voice became quieter.
“Tell me why.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
And that silence was louder than any confession.
My mother stood.
“Your father knew something was wrong.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“He spent his final months trying to uncover the truth.””
“About what?””
She looked at Vanessa.
And Vanessa looked away.
That was when I understood.
This wasn’t a fight between my wife and my mother.
It was a fight that started long before I ever knew about it.
A fight my father had tried to finish.
A fight someone wanted buried.
I reached toward the envelope.
My fingers touched the seal.
Vanessa suddenly moved.
“Marcus, please.””
I stopped.
Because I had never heard fear in her voice before.
Not once.
“What are you afraid I’ll find?””
She stared at me.
Her eyes filled with tears.
But I couldn’t tell if they were real.
Finally, she whispered:
“If you open that envelope, you’ll find out who I really am.””
The room went silent.
My hand remained on the envelope.

And for the first time in my life…
I wondered if the woman I married had ever truly existed at all.
