Chapter 12: The Betrayal Hidden In Plain Sight
The recording stopped.
Not because it ended.
Because someone had damaged it.
The final seconds were gone.
The name.
The answer.
The thing my father had sacrificed everything to reveal.
Gone.
I stared at the recorder.
“No.””
I pressed the button again.
Nothing.
I hit it harder.
Still nothing.
Vanessa stood frozen beside me.
Her face had lost all color.
“What name did he say?””
I looked at her.
“You heard it.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“You reacted.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I knew who he was talking about.””
My heart pounded.
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at the damaged recorder.
Then whispered:
“Someone who has been pretending to help us.””
The words were familiar.
Too familiar.
Because everyone had been pretending.
Everyone had been hiding.
I grabbed the flash drive.
“We’re going back.””
Vanessa followed quickly.
“Marcus.””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“No more secrets.””
She nodded.
“I agree.””
The drive contained hundreds of files.
Documents.
Photos.
Emails.
Everything my father had collected.
We returned to the mansion.
My mother, Daniel, and Richard were waiting.
The moment they saw the flash drive, their expressions changed.
Richard stood.
“You found it.””
I looked at him.
“You knew it was there.””
He didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
My anger returned.
“You knew everything.””
“No.””
“Then what did you know?””
Richard looked exhausted.
“That your father trusted someone who betrayed him.””
“Who?””
Silence.
Again.
I slammed the flash drive onto the table.
“I’m done with silence.””
My voice shook the room.
“Someone tell me the truth.””
My mother stepped forward.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You don’t get to protect me anymore.””
That hurt her.
But I needed her to hear it.
“I need the truth.””
Daniel looked at Richard.
Then at me.
“Your father suspected someone inside the family.””
“Inside the family?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Nobody spoke.
Then the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Elegant.
Calm.
She looked at me like she already knew what was happening.
Vanessa immediately stepped backward.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You know her.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“Yes.””
The woman smiled slightly.
“Hello, Marcus.””
I stared.
“Who are you?””
She walked into the room.
“My name is Evelyn Hayes.””
Richard froze.
The color disappeared from his face.
Because this woman wasn’t a stranger.
She was his wife.
And she was the person my father’s final message was trying to expose.
Evelyn looked around the room.
“Looks like the family reunion happened without me.””
I stepped forward.
“What do you know about my father’s death?””
She smiled.
Not kindly.
Like someone who had been waiting years for this moment.
“I know everything.””
The room went silent.
She continued:
“I know why your father died.””
My hands tightened.
“Then tell me.””
Evelyn looked at Vanessa.
Then at my mother.
Then back at me.
“Your father didn’t die because he discovered a crime.””
A pause.
“He died because he discovered who was protecting the criminals.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“Who?””
Evelyn smiled.
May you like
And pointed directly at the person standing beside me.
“Your mother.””
