Chapter 2: The Woman Who Wanted My Mother Gone

I used to believe betrayal came with warning signs.

A broken promise.

A suspicious message.

A late-night phone call.

But I learned something that night.

Sometimes betrayal walks through your front door wearing the same smile you fell in love with.

Vanessa followed me downstairs after our argument.

My mother stayed upstairs.

I wanted her away from the tension.

Away from the coldness filling a house that was supposed to be safe.

The grand living room looked exactly the same as it had every other night.

Cream furniture.

Perfect decorations.

A staircase leading upstairs.

Everything looked peaceful.

But my family was falling apart in the middle of it.

Vanessa sat on the sofa and crossed her legs.

“You’re angry because you think I’m hurting your mother.””

I stood across from her.

“You told her to pack her things.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“You’re admitting it?””

“I’m not ashamed.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

She looked toward the staircase.

“Because someone has to make difficult decisions.””

“My mother is not a difficult decision.””

Vanessa leaned forward.

“Marcus, you have no idea what’s happening in this house.””

I shook my head.

“No. I know exactly what’s happening.””

“Do you?””

Her voice was calm.

Dangerously calm.

“She has convinced you she needs protection.””

“She doesn’t need protection from you.””

Vanessa smiled slightly.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“You always choose her.””

I frowned.

“Because she’s my mother.””

“And I’m your wife.””

The words hung between us.

For a moment, I didn’t know what to say.

Because I had promised Vanessa forever.

But I never promised I would abandon the woman who gave me everything.

“Those relationships are not enemies,” I said.

Vanessa looked away.

“They are when one person refuses to leave.””

I stepped closer.

“You wanted my mother gone.””

“Yes.””

The answer was so cold that I almost didn’t recognize her.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked directly at me.

“Because this is our home.””

“My mother has a room.””

“She has influence.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa stood.

“She controls you.””

I almost laughed.

“Controls me?””

“Yes.””

She walked closer.

“You don’t see it because you’re too loyal.””

“My loyalty is not a weakness.””

“Sometimes it is.””

Before I could respond, footsteps came from the staircase.

My mother appeared slowly, holding the suitcase handle.

My heart sank.

She shouldn’t have been there.

“Mom…”

She looked at me.

“I heard enough.””

Vanessa turned.

“Good.””

I looked at my wife.

“Don’t.””

But Vanessa continued.

“You should understand why this is happening.””

Gloria held onto the suitcase.

“Marcus, maybe she’s right.””

I turned toward my mother.

“What?””

She gave me a sad smile.

“Maybe I have stayed too long.””

“No.””

“Son—”

“No.””

My voice echoed through the living room.

“You don’t apologize for existing.””

Gloria looked down.

Vanessa watched us silently.

Then she walked toward the front door.

“Take your things and go.””

My body went still.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa pointed toward the entrance.

“I said she should take her things and leave.””

My mother froze.

I stepped forward.

“You don’t get to order my mother out of this house.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Actually, I do.””

Something about the confidence in her voice bothered me.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked at Gloria.

And that was when I noticed something strange.

My mother wasn’t looking at Vanessa.

She was looking at the black suitcase.

Like she remembered something.

Like she knew this moment had been possible.

“Mom?”” I asked.

She didn’t respond.

“Mom, what is it?””

Her hand slowly moved toward the suitcase.

Vanessa noticed.

And for the first time all night, Vanessa looked afraid.

“Gloria.””

My mother ignored her.

She opened the suitcase.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

That single word changed everything.

Because it wasn’t a command.

It was fear.

My mother reached beneath the clothes.

Her fingers searched carefully.

Then she pulled something out.

A yellow envelope.

Sealed.

The room became completely silent.

I stared at it.

“What is that?””

My mother looked at me.

She didn’t answer.

Vanessa’s face had lost all color.

“Where did you get that?””

My mother held the envelope close.

“I was hoping I would never need it.””

My heart started racing.

Because whatever was inside that envelope…

Vanessa knew about it.

And she was terrified.

Then I saw the writing on the front.

My name.

My hands went cold.

“Marcus…”

I looked closer.

The words were written clearly.

“For Marcus — only if Vanessa tries to remove me.””

I looked up.

Vanessa took a step backward.

And for the first time since I met her, my wife looked completely powerless.

“What is inside that envelope?”” I asked.

Neither woman answered.

But their silence told me everything.

There was a truth hidden inside that paper.

A truth someone had spent years trying to bury.

And before I could open it, Vanessa whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“Marcus… you don’t understand what you’re about to find out.””
