Chapter 6: The Truth Vanessa Tried To Bury

Nobody moved.

The folder sat on the table beside my father’s letter.

Two pieces of paper.

Two pieces of the past.

Both waiting to destroy the present.

I looked at the stranger standing in my living room.

“You need to start talking.””

The man nodded slowly.

“My name is Daniel Brooks.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But my mother reacted immediately.

She whispered:

“Daniel.””

I turned toward her.

“You know him.””

She looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked at the floor.

“Because he was your father’s closest friend.””

I stared at Daniel.

“My father had a best friend?””

Daniel gave a sad smile.

“He did.””

“Then why have I never heard your name?””

His expression changed.

“Because your father wanted it that way.””

My frustration grew.

“Everyone keeps saying my father wanted things hidden.””

I pointed at the letter.

“He hid things.””

I pointed at Vanessa.

“She hid things.””

I looked at my mother.

“You hid things.””

My voice cracked.

“And now I’m supposed to trust everyone?””

Nobody answered.

Because they knew I was right.

Daniel slowly walked toward the table.

“Your father wasn’t trying to hide the truth from you, Marcus.””

“Then what was he doing?””

“Protecting you from it.””

I looked at the folder.

“What’s inside?””

Daniel glanced at Vanessa.

“She knows.””

Vanessa’s face turned cold.

“Don’t do this.””

Daniel looked disappointed.

“I spent twenty years waiting because I respected your father’s wishes.””

Then he looked at me.

“But I won’t stand by while his son is destroyed by the same people who destroyed him.””

My jaw tightened.

“Who destroyed him?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Names.

Dates.

My eyes scanned the pages.

Then I saw something.

A signature.

Vanessa’s last name.

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Marcus.””

“No.””

I held up the papers.

“Answer me.””

She closed her eyes.

“My family had problems.””

“Problems?””

Daniel interrupted.

“Her family stole millions from the company your father investigated.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked hurt.

But not surprised.

“You knew.””

Her voice was small.

“I knew my family did things wrong.””

“And you never told me?””

“I was afraid.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone is always afraid.””

My mother stepped closer.

“Marcus…”

“No, Mom.””

I looked at her.

“I need answers.””

Daniel nodded.

“Your father discovered that Vanessa’s father was involved in illegal financial activities.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Stop.””

But Daniel continued.

“He planned to expose everything.””

I looked at the letter.

“That’s why he wrote this?””

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“What happened to him?””

Nobody spoke.

The silence was unbearable.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“He didn’t die because of an accident.””

My head snapped toward her.

“What?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I found out later.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You knew more than you admitted.””

She looked down.

“I was nineteen.””

“That doesn’t change what happened.””

I felt numb.

My father’s death.

The secret.

The envelope.

Vanessa.

Everything was connected.

I looked at my wife.

“Did you know my father was in danger?””

She didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

My heart broke in a way I didn’t expect.

Because anger was easier than disappointment.

Anger gave me something to hold onto.

But disappointment made me question every memory.

Every kiss.

Every conversation.

Every moment I thought was real.

“I loved you,” Vanessa whispered.

I looked at her.

“Did you?””

She cried.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you come into my life carrying a secret that could destroy my family?””

She wiped her tears.

“Because I thought I could fix what my family broke.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t fix a lie by building a marriage on top of it.””

Vanessa looked at him with anger.

“You don’t know what I sacrificed.””

Daniel stared back.

“Your sacrifice doesn’t erase your choices.””

The room became silent.

Then my mother picked up the yellow envelope.

“There’s one more thing.””

Everyone looked at her.

She turned toward me.

“Your father didn’t just leave this letter.””

My heart started racing.

“What else?””

She looked toward the envelope.

“He left instructions.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Gloria…”

She ignored him.

“He wanted you to find something else if Vanessa ever tried to remove me from your home.””

I stared.

“Something else?””

My mother nodded.

“Yes.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“No.””

Her voice was filled with panic.

Everyone looked at her.

She realized what she had revealed.

I slowly turned toward her.

“What?””

She froze.

For the first time, she looked completely defeated.

I took a step closer.

“What did my father leave behind?””

Vanessa whispered:

“The one thing your father was afraid I would find.””

And then Daniel reached into his coat pocket.

He placed a small key on the table.

A key I had never seen before.

A key that had my father’s initials engraved into the metal.

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father hid the final proof somewhere only you could access.””

I picked up the key.

May you like

And Vanessa whispered the words that terrified me most.

“Marcus… if you use that key, you’ll discover why your father really died.””
