Chapter 8: The Name Written In My Father’s Journal

I stared at the page.

The ink looked darker than the rest.

Like my father had pressed the pen harder when he wrote the name.

I read it again.

And again.

Because my brain refused to accept it.

The name belonged to someone I trusted.

Someone who had hugged me when I was a child.

Someone who had sat at my dinner table.

Someone who had cried with me at my father’s funeral.

My mother.

Gloria.

I looked up slowly.

Nobody spoke.

The silence was unbearable.

“Mom.””

Her face changed.

Not surprise.

Pain.

That was when I knew.

She knew what was written.

“You knew.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“Not another secret.””

My mother reached toward me.

“I can explain.””

“Explain what?””

My voice echoed through the hidden room.

“Why Dad wrote your name?””

Vanessa looked confused.

Even she didn’t seem prepared for this.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“Your father never wanted Marcus to see this part first.””

I turned toward him.

“What does that mean?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“It means your father knew there were things your mother was hiding too.””

My chest tightened.

I looked at Gloria.

“Tell me the truth.””

She sat down slowly.

For the first time, my mother looked old.

Not weak.

Just tired.

“I never wanted you to find out this way.””

“That sentence doesn’t mean anything anymore.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Your father was investigating Vanessa’s family.””

“I know.””

“But he also discovered something else.””

“What?””

She looked at the journal.

“Something connected to me.””

The room became silent.

I waited.

Finally, she whispered:

“I helped him.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“I helped your father investigate.””

I looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

“Your mother was one of the reasons we discovered what was happening.””

I stared at the journal.

“Then why did he write your name?””

My mother looked down.

“Because I lied to him.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

My mother.

The woman who taught me honesty.

The woman who always told me lies destroyed families.

Had lied to my father.

“About what?””

She took a shaky breath.

“About Vanessa.””

I turned toward my wife.

Vanessa looked shocked.

My mother continued.

“When your father found out Vanessa’s family was involved, he wanted to confront them.””

She looked at me.

“I begged him not to.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew Vanessa.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You knew her before me?””

She nodded.

“How?””

“She came to me first.””

Vanessa looked down.

My anger shifted.

“What does that mean?””

My mother looked at Vanessa.

“Tell him.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I was twenty-two.””

Her voice was quiet.

“My father had ruined his own company. People were investigating him. He disappeared.””

I listened.

“He left behind debts. Enemies. Problems.””

She looked at me.

“I found out your father had evidence.””

“Against your family.””

“Yes.””

My jaw tightened.

“And you went to my mother.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I wanted help.””

My mother nodded.

“She was young.””

I looked at her.

“You protected her?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I saw a scared girl who was trapped by the choices of people before her.””

I looked at Vanessa.

For a moment, I saw something different.

Not the arrogant woman who demanded my mother leave.

A frightened young woman who had been carrying something too heavy.

But then I remembered everything else.

The lies.

The manipulation.

The suitcase.

The way she looked at my mother.

I couldn’t forget.

My mother continued.

“Your father found out I helped Vanessa.””

“And he was angry?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“He was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of what Vanessa’s family would do if they knew she was helping us.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You were working with my father?””

She nodded.

“I was.””

“Then why hide it?””

Her tears fell.

“Because after your father died, I was terrified.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

“What happened the night he died?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“I think you’re finally ready to hear it.””

My stomach tightened.

He opened the folder again.

Inside was a photograph.

A car.

A wreck.

My father’s vehicle.

But something else caught my attention.

A person standing near the scene.

A person I recognized.

I picked up the photograph.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Yes.””

My hands shook.

Because the person standing beside my father’s crashed car…

was someone I had known my entire life.

Someone who had just spent the last hour pretending to help me.

Someone who had never told me the truth.

I looked at my mother.

“Were you there the night Dad died?””

Her face collapsed.

And after years of silence…

May you like

my mother finally whispered:

“Yes.””
