Chapter 13: The Truth My Mother Buried
For twenty years, I had believed my mother was the one person in the world who would never hurt me.
Now I stood in the middle of my own home, staring at her, wondering if I had ever truly known her at all.
Evelyn’s accusation hung in the air.
“Your mother.””
Two words.
Enough to destroy everything.
My mother didn’t move.
She didn’t scream.
She didn’t deny it.
And that scared me more than anything.
“Mom.””
My voice sounded different.
Colder.
She looked at me.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I need the truth.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I never wanted you to find out like this.””
I almost laughed.
Nobody ever wanted me to find out.
That had become the pattern of my entire life.
“I’m tired of hearing that.””
Evelyn stood calmly near the doorway.
Like she was watching a storm she had created.
Richard looked at her with disgust.
“Don’t pretend you’re innocent.””
Evelyn turned toward him.
“Neither are you.””
The room erupted with tension.
I looked between them.
“Enough.””
Everyone stopped.
“I don’t care about your old fights anymore.””
I pointed toward the table.
“I care about my father.””
My voice cracked.
“I care about why he died.””
My mother closed her eyes.
Then she whispered:
“I didn’t kill your father.””
The words should have relieved me.
They didn’t.
Because I hadn’t accused her.
Not yet.
I looked at Evelyn.
“Then explain.””
Evelyn smiled slightly.
“Your mother was involved.””
My mother looked down.
That small movement told me there was truth somewhere.
“Mom?””
She sat slowly.
“I was involved.””
My chest tightened.
“Doing what?””
She looked at the floor.
“Helping your father.””
I frowned.
“That’s not what she said.””
Evelyn crossed her arms.
“Because Gloria always tells half the truth.””
My mother looked at her.
“And you always tell lies wrapped in pieces of truth.””
The two women stared at each other.
And suddenly I understood.
This wasn’t a simple betrayal.
This was a war that started years before I was old enough to understand it.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Marcus, your father discovered financial crimes connected to several people.””
“Vanessa’s family.””
“Yes.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked devastated.
“But there was another problem.””
“What problem?””
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“Someone inside the investigation was leaking information.””
My eyes narrowed.
“And you think that was Mom?””
My mother answered before anyone else.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“I was the leak.””
The room froze.
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“I gave information away.””
My hands went numb.
“Why?””
She cried quietly.
“Because I was trying to save someone.””
I already knew.
“Who?””
She looked at Vanessa.
My wife looked shocked.
“Me?””
My mother nodded.
“Your father found out Vanessa was trapped.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“He wanted to expose her family.””
“And you stopped him?””
“No.””
My mother shook her head.
“I asked him to wait.””
“Why?””
“Because Vanessa came to me.””
The room became quiet.
My mother continued.
“She was young. She was terrified. Her father had threatened her.””
Vanessa’s tears fell.
“My father said if I helped anyone investigate him, he would destroy my life.””
I stared at her.
“So you and my mother worked together.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did Dad think you betrayed him?””
My mother looked toward the journal.
“Because I made one mistake.””
“What?””
“I trusted the wrong person.””
Everyone looked at Evelyn.
Evelyn laughed softly.
“Finally.””
My mother stood.
“You manipulated all of us.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No, Gloria.””
She stepped closer.
“Your biggest mistake was thinking you were the only one protecting Marcus.””
Richard moved forward.
“Evelyn, stop.””
She ignored him.
“Your father discovered the truth about your mother.””
I looked at her.
“What truth?””
Evelyn smiled.
“That Gloria didn’t just protect Vanessa.””
My heart sank.
“She protected the person who actually destroyed your father’s life.””
My mother looked terrified.
“No.””
Evelyn continued.
“She protected the person who ordered the attack.””
The room went silent.
I looked at my mother.
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
She couldn’t.
Because she was crying.
And that scared me.
Then Evelyn pulled something from her bag.
A document.
She placed it on the table.
“This is your father’s final investigation report.””
I looked down.
The first page had a name.
A name I recognized.
Not from my childhood.
From my own life.
My blood ran cold.
Because the person listed at the top wasn’t Vanessa.
It wasn’t Evelyn.
May you like
It wasn’t Richard.
It was me.
