Chapter 1: The Fall
By the time Callie shoved Naomi beside the school pool, almost everyone had learned to look away.
That was the trick.
You could humiliate someone in broad daylight if you made sure everyone believed they were too scared to fight back.
The afternoon swim practice had ended twenty minutes earlier, but the pool deck was still warm beneath Naomi’s sneakers. The sharp smell of chlorine clung to the air. Water dripped steadily from the lane ropes into the deep end, making a soft clicking sound against the tiles.
Naomi sat alone on a metal bench, her backpack beside her, staring at the empty lanes.
She heard footsteps.
Then Callie’s voice.
“Still pretending you belong on this team?””
Naomi didn’t look up.
Callie stopped directly in front of her.
She wore the school’s red-and-black swim jacket, zipped halfway up, her wet hair pulled into a perfect ponytail. Two boys followed her. Mason and Tyler. Both had been on the varsity team for years.
Neither looked surprised to see Naomi sitting there.
Callie smiled.
“Didn’t you hear me?””
Naomi slowly zipped the side pocket of her backpack.
Callie tilted her head.
“Or are you doing that silent thing again?””
Mason laughed.
“She does that because she has nothing to say.””
Tyler leaned against one of the starting blocks.
“Maybe she thinks if she stays quiet, nobody notices her.””
Naomi finally looked up.
Her eyes moved from Callie to Mason, then Tyler.
No fear.
No anger.
Just a long, unreadable stare.
Callie’s smile tightened.
“You know, Naomi, sometimes I almost feel bad for you.””
“You don’t,” Naomi said quietly.
The words landed harder than Callie expected.
Her smile disappeared.
“What?””
“You don’t feel bad for me.””
Mason gave a nervous laugh.
“She actually talks.””
Callie stepped closer.
“You've been acting like you're better than everyone since you joined the team.””
Naomi stood.
“I never said that.””
Callie pointed toward the pool.
“You don't have to say it. You walk around here like nobody can touch you.””
Naomi adjusted the strap of her backpack.
“I’m just trying to leave.””
Callie blocked her path.
“No.””
Naomi stopped.
“Move.””
Callie’s eyebrows rose.
“Or what?””
Naomi’s voice remained calm.
“Walk away.””
Mason laughed again.
Tyler pushed away from the starting block.
“What are you going to do?””
Naomi glanced toward the pool.
Then back at them.
“Exactly what you deserve.””
Callie reached for Naomi’s arm.
Naomi moved.
It happened so quickly that later, everyone would remember it differently.
Callie grabbed at empty air.
Naomi turned her shoulder.
Callie’s sneaker slipped on the wet tile.
Her arms flew outward.
For one second, she stood there with a look of pure disbelief.
Then—
Splash.
Callie disappeared into the pool.
The water exploded upward.
Mason shouted.
“Callie!””
Tyler ran to the edge.
Callie surfaced choking, her perfect ponytail hanging across her face.
“What the hell!””
The laughter that had filled the deck only seconds before was gone.
Naomi hadn’t moved.
She stood beside the bench, holding her backpack in one hand.
Callie slapped wet hair away from her eyes.
“You pushed me!””
Naomi stared at her.
“No.””
“You did!””
“No,” Naomi repeated.
Mason turned toward her.
“You think this is funny?””
Naomi shook her head.
“No.””
“Then apologize!””
Naomi looked at him.
“You watched her do this every time.””
Mason froze.
Tyler’s expression changed.
Callie gripped the edge of the pool.
“What are you talking about?””
Naomi pointed toward the ceiling.
Above the pool deck, tucked behind a protective metal cover, was a small black security camera.
The red recording light was on.
Callie stared at it.
Then at Naomi.
For the first time, the confidence disappeared from her face.
Mason noticed too.
“You knew that was there?””
Naomi said nothing.
Tyler took one step toward her.
“You set that up?””
“No.””
“You planned this?””
Naomi’s eyes hardened.
“I didn't need to.””
Callie climbed out of the pool, water streaming from her jacket.
“You think a camera changes anything?””
Naomi looked directly at her.
“It changes everything.””
A voice came from the hallway.
“That's enough.””
Everyone turned.
Coach Daniels walked onto the pool deck holding a phone.
She wasn't wearing her whistle.
She wasn't carrying a clipboard.
She was holding the phone with both hands, staring at its screen.
Callie swallowed.
“Coach—”
“Don't.””
Coach Daniels lifted one hand.
Callie stopped.
The coach walked toward them.
“I just watched last week's footage.””
Silence.
Mason glanced at Tyler.
Tyler looked at Callie.
Naomi remained still.
Coach Daniels stopped beside the bench.
“What happened to Naomi's locker on Thursday?””
No one answered.
Callie crossed her arms.
“I don't know.””
Coach Daniels tapped her phone.
“I thought you'd say that.””
She turned the screen around.
On it was a paused video from the locker room hallway.
The timestamp was visible.
Thursday.
6:18 p.m.
Naomi recognized the angle immediately.
The same security system.
The same camera.
Mason’s face went pale.
Coach Daniels pressed play.
The video showed Naomi walking away from the lockers.
Callie entered the frame thirty seconds later.
Mason followed.
Then Tyler.
They looked around.
Callie opened Naomi’s locker.
Mason pulled something from his pocket.
A metal tool.
Tyler laughed.
Callie scratched a long line across the locker door.
Then another.
Naomi watched without blinking.
Coach Daniels stopped the video.
Callie spoke first.
“That doesn't prove anything.””
Coach Daniels looked at her.
“It shows you damaging school property.””
“She started it!””
Naomi almost laughed.
“Started what?””
Callie pointed at her.
“She was always trying to embarrass us!””
Coach Daniels’ voice turned cold.
“Enough.””
Mason stepped forward.
“Coach, there's more to this.””
Tyler immediately looked at him.
“Mason.””
“What?””
“You should shut up.””
Coach Daniels stared at both boys.
“That is probably the smartest thing either of you has said today.””
Callie climbed fully onto the deck.
“Coach, Naomi has hated us from the beginning.””
Naomi looked at her.
“I barely knew you.””
“You were jealous!””
“Of what?””
Callie opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Naomi took one step closer.
“You keep saying I'm jealous.””
Her voice was quiet enough that everyone had to listen.
“But you never say what I'm supposed to be jealous of.””
Callie looked away.
Coach Daniels lowered her phone.
“There's another clip.””
Mason’s shoulders stiffened.
“What clip?””
Coach Daniels stared at him.
“The one that was uploaded last night.””
Tyler whispered, “Oh my God.””
Callie turned sharply.
“You said it was deleted.””
Mason went completely still.
Naomi heard every word.
“What was deleted?””
No one answered.
Coach Daniels looked from Callie to Mason to Tyler.
Then she unlocked her phone again.
“I received a copy this morning.””
She hesitated.
“It's from inside the locker room.””
Naomi’s stomach tightened.
The coach pressed play.
For a few seconds, the screen showed nothing but the locker room doorway.
Then the three of them entered.
Callie.
Mason.
Tyler.
Callie looked directly into the camera.
And smiled.
Naomi watched her on the screen say something she couldn't hear.
The coach increased the volume.
Callie’s voice came through the tiny speaker.
“Put it in her bag.””
Naomi’s breath caught.
Mason answered.
“What if someone sees?””
Tyler laughed.
“They won't.””
Callie leaned closer to Naomi’s open backpack.
Then she reached inside.
Coach Daniels stopped the video.
Nobody spoke.
Naomi stared at the frozen image.
Her own bag.
Callie’s hand inside it.
And suddenly the strange things from the past week made sense.
The whispers.
The teacher who had searched her desk.
The principal calling her into the office.
The missing fundraiser money.
The envelope they had claimed was found in her bag.
Naomi slowly turned toward Callie.
“You.””
Callie’s face had gone white.
“It wasn't like that.””
Naomi stepped closer.
“You put it there.””
“We were joking.””
“You stole the money.””
“We didn't steal anything!””
Coach Daniels raised her phone.
“The video shows you putting an envelope into Naomi's backpack.””
Callie’s voice cracked.
“You don't understand.””
Naomi looked at Mason.
Then Tyler.
“You all knew.””
Mason backed away.
“Naomi, wait.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice was steadier now.
“You wanted everyone to think I was afraid.””
She looked toward the camera above them.
Then back at the three people who had spent weeks trying to destroy her reputation.
“But you made one mistake.””
Callie whispered, “What?””
Naomi picked up her backpack.
“You forgot who was watching.””
Coach Daniels looked down at her phone again.
Her expression suddenly changed.
“What is it?”” Naomi asked.
The coach stared at the screen for several seconds.
Then she looked up.
“There’s one more video.””
Callie’s face drained of color.
Coach Daniels swallowed.
“And this one was recorded the night the fundraiser money disappeared.””
Naomi felt the entire pool deck go silent.
The coach pressed play.
A new face appeared on the screen.
And Naomi knew him.
May you like
Everyone did.
It was the person none of them expected to see.
