Chapter 7: The Secret Her Father Left Behind
Naomi read the document three times.
Each time, the words stayed the same.
She wanted them to change.
She wanted the ink to rearrange itself into something else.
A mistake.
A misunderstanding.
Anything.
But the signature at the bottom remained.
Her father’s name.
Daniel Reed.
Her fingers tightened around the paper.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Ethan watched her.
Not with anger.
Not with satisfaction.
With certainty.
Like he had been waiting for this exact moment.
Naomi looked up.
“Where did you get this?””
Nobody answered.
Her eyes moved to Mr. Carter.
Then to Ethan.
“Where?””
Ethan leaned against the bench.
“From the school archives.””
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
Naomi looked at the paper again.
The document was old.
Almost faded.
It contained financial records from years earlier.
But there was one section that caught her attention.
A section she had never seen before.
A section about missing funds.
And beneath it…
A review request.
Signed by her father.
Coach Daniels stepped closer.
“Naomi?””
She didn’t move.
She couldn’t.
Because for the first time since this entire nightmare began, the person she trusted most had become part of the mystery.
“My father left this school years ago,” Naomi said.
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.””
“So why would he be involved?””
Mr. Carter finally spoke.
“Because he was the first person who noticed the problem.””
Naomi turned toward him.
“You knew?””
His expression was heavy.
“Yes.””
The disappointment hit again.
Another secret.
Another person who knew something and chose silence.
“How long?””
Mr. Carter looked down.
“Since before you started here.””
Naomi laughed once.
It wasn’t happiness.
It was disbelief.
“So everyone knew except me.””
“No,” Mr. Carter said.
“Not everyone.””
She looked at Ethan.
“But enough people.””
The pool deck became quiet.
Even Callie looked uncomfortable.
Naomi held up the document.
“Explain.””
Mr. Carter took a slow breath.
“Your father was the school’s financial advisor twelve years ago.””
Naomi frowned.
“My father never worked here.””
“He did.””
The answer shocked her.
“He left before you knew.””
“Why?””
Nobody spoke.
That silence hurt more than any explanation could have.
Naomi looked at Ethan.
“You knew this.””
“Yes.””
“And you waited until now to show me.””
“Yes.””
The honesty was almost worse.
“Why?””
Ethan looked at the paper.
“Because you needed to stop seeing yourself as someone who was just trying to fix a problem.””
Naomi stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
“It means this was never random.””
He stepped closer.
“You weren’t just a student who noticed missing money.””
Naomi shook her head.
“I don’t understand.””
“You found the same thing your father found.””
A cold feeling moved through her.
“What?””
Ethan pointed at the document.
“Years ago, your father discovered money was being moved through hidden accounts.””
Coach Daniels looked shocked.
“And the school covered it up?””
Mr. Carter closed his eyes.
“Not exactly.””
Naomi looked at him.
“Then what exactly happened?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Your father was blamed.””
The words felt like a punch.
Naomi froze.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“He was accused of stealing?””
Mr. Carter nodded slowly.
“But he didn’t.””
Ethan spoke.
“That’s the part nobody told you.””
Naomi looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because the people responsible made sure his name disappeared.””
She looked at the document again.
Her father’s signature.
His handwriting.
His warning.
A memory appeared suddenly.
She was younger.
Sitting at the kitchen table.
Her father staring at a stack of papers.
She remembered asking him why he looked angry.
He had smiled.
Told her adults had problems she didn’t need to worry about.
At the time, she believed him.
Now she wondered how much he had hidden.
Callie spoke softly.
“Naomi…”
Everyone looked at her.
For once, there was no cruelty in her voice.
Just uncertainty.
“I didn’t know.””
Naomi looked at her.
“About my father?””
Callie nodded.
“I swear.””
Naomi didn’t answer.
She wasn’t sure who deserved trust anymore.
Ethan looked at Mr. Carter.
“You should tell her the rest.””
Mr. Carter’s face hardened.
“I think you’ve caused enough damage.””
Ethan smiled.
“Damage?””
He looked around.
“Is that what we call the truth now?””
Coach Daniels stepped between them.
“No more.””
She looked at Mr. Carter.
“Tell us everything.””
Mr. Carter stood silently for several seconds.
Then he finally spoke.
“Your father found evidence that someone was moving money from school accounts.””
Naomi listened carefully.
“He reported it.””
“To who?””
“The administration.””
“And?””
“They didn’t believe him.””
Naomi felt her stomach tighten.
“Or they didn’t want to believe him.””
Mr. Carter didn’t respond.
That was an answer.
“What happened after?””
“He kept searching.””
“And then?””
Mr. Carter looked at her.
“He disappeared from the school.””
Naomi swallowed.
“My father quit.””
“Yes.””
“He wasn’t fired?””
“No.””
Mr. Carter’s voice became quieter.
“He was forced out.””
The pool lights hummed above them.
Naomi looked away.
All these years, she had thought her father simply walked away from something.
But maybe he had been pushed.
Maybe he had been trying to protect himself.
Maybe he had been trying to protect her.
Ethan interrupted.
“And now history is repeating.””
Naomi looked at him.
“What?””
“You found the same pattern.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“This isn’t about me.””
“It became about you the moment you opened those records.””
Naomi looked at the paper.
Then at Ethan.
“Why are you telling me this?””
The question made him pause.
For the first time, Ethan looked less confident.
“I need you to understand something.””
“What?””
“You’re not fighting against three people who made bad choices.””
His voice lowered.
“You’re fighting against a system that survives because people stop asking questions.””
The words were almost convincing.
Almost.
But Naomi remembered everything.
The lies.
The manipulation.
The way he had used people.
“You don’t get to pretend you’re the hero.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“I never said I was.””
“Then what are you?””
He looked at her.
“The person who knows how deep this goes.””
Before Naomi could respond, Coach Daniels’ phone buzzed.
Everyone turned.
She looked at the screen.
Then frowned.
“What?””
She read the message again.
Her face changed.
“What is it?”” Mr. Carter asked.
Coach Daniels slowly lowered the phone.
“The principal wants everyone in his office.””
“That’s normal,” Mason said.
Coach Daniels shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at Naomi.
“He said to bring the original document.””
Naomi felt uneasy.
“Why?””
Coach Daniels didn’t answer.
Because everyone already knew.
Someone wanted the paper.
Someone wanted the evidence.
Ethan looked at the document in Naomi’s hand.
Then smiled faintly.
“You should be careful.””
Naomi stared at him.
“About what?””
“About who wants the truth.””
A chill moved through her.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan looked toward the hallway.
“The person who hid your father’s evidence all these years…”
He paused.
“…is the same person who just requested that document back.””
Nobody spoke.
Naomi looked down at the paper.
Then at the dark hallway leading toward the principal’s office.
For the first time, she realized something terrifying.
The person behind everything wasn’t running away.
May you like
They were inviting them closer.
And someone at the school was already waiting.
