Chapter 8: The Office Where Everything Began
The principal’s office had never felt dangerous before.
Naomi had walked through those doors dozens of times.
Usually for ordinary things.
Permission slips.
Team meetings.
Announcements.
Small conversations where adults smiled and told students everything was under control.
But this time was different.
This time, every person entering that room carried a secret.
Naomi walked behind Coach Daniels, holding the old document tightly.
She could feel the edges of the paper pressing into her fingers.
Behind her came Ethan.
Then Callie, Mason, and Tyler.
Mr. Carter walked last.
Nobody spoke.
The hallway felt unusually empty.
Almost like the school itself was holding its breath.
When they reached the principal’s office, Coach Daniels opened the door.
“Everyone is here.””
Principal Hayes looked up from his desk.
He wasn’t surprised.
That bothered Naomi.
Not shocked.
Not confused.
Just waiting.
His eyes immediately went to the document in Naomi’s hand.
“Is that it?””
Naomi stopped.
“What?””
Principal Hayes looked at the paper.
“The document.””
The room became silent.
Naomi noticed something.
He didn’t ask what it was.
He already knew.
“How did you know about this?””
Principal Hayes leaned back.
“Mr. Carter informed me.””
Naomi looked at Mr. Carter.
“You did?””
He didn’t answer.
Coach Daniels stepped forward.
“You asked for the document.””
Principal Hayes nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked at Naomi.
“Because some things should stay buried.””
The words made the room colder.
Naomi tightened her grip.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stepped forward.
“That’s exactly what people say when they know something is wrong.””
Principal Hayes studied her.
“You sound like your father.””
The sentence froze her.
“My father?””
Nobody moved.
Principal Hayes sighed.
“I suppose eventually someone would tell you.””
Naomi stared.
“You knew him.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
He looked down.
“Because I was here when everything happened.””
The answer felt like another door opening.
Another secret waiting behind it.
Naomi shook her head.
“This school has spent years hiding things.””
Principal Hayes looked uncomfortable.
“You don’t understand the situation.””
“No.””
Her voice became sharper.
“I understand perfectly.””
She placed the document on his desk.
“My father found missing money.””
Silence.
“He reported it.””
Another silence.
“He was blamed.””
Principal Hayes looked away.
Naomi saw it.
The guilt.
“You knew.””
He didn’t deny it.
Coach Daniels stepped closer.
“Principal?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“This isn’t what you think.””
Naomi almost laughed.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
She looked around the office.
“Everyone has a different version.””
Her eyes landed on Ethan.
“But somehow every version begins with someone hiding the truth.””
Ethan remained quiet.
That surprised her.
For once, he wasn’t trying to control the conversation.
Principal Hayes looked at the group.
“You need to understand something.””
He picked up the document.
“Your father was not the only person investigating.””
Naomi frowned.
“What?””
“There were others.””
“Who?””
Principal Hayes looked at Mr. Carter.
Then at Ethan.
Naomi noticed.
“You.””
Ethan’s expression stayed calm.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Years later.””
Naomi shook her head.
“You were a student.””
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
“You knew about my father’s case when you were a student?””
Ethan nodded.
“My family was connected to the school.””
“How?””
He didn’t answer.
Naomi stepped closer.
“How?””
Ethan looked at Principal Hayes.
Then finally said:
“My father worked here.””
A chill moved through the room.
“What did he do?””
Ethan’s face became unreadable.
“He handled finances.””
Everyone went quiet.
Naomi felt the pieces moving.
A financial problem.
A missing account.
A student council treasurer.
A family connection.
“You’re not investigating this.””
Ethan looked at her.
“You’re part of it.””
The words hit.
Ethan looked away.
“My father was one of the people blamed.””
Naomi stared.
“Your father?””
“Yes.””
“But you said my father was blamed.””
“He was.””
Naomi frowned.
“Then why?””
Ethan’s voice lowered.
“Because two families were destroyed by the same lie.””
For the first time, Naomi saw something different in him.
Not arrogance.
Not confidence.
Pain.
But it disappeared quickly.
Principal Hayes interrupted.
“This is exactly why this needs to stop.””
Naomi turned.
“Why?””
“Because digging into the past only creates more damage.””
She stared at him.
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Covering it up created the damage.””
The room went quiet.
Callie looked at Naomi.
Then quietly said:
“She’s right.””
Everyone looked at her.
Callie swallowed.
“I mean…”
She looked uncomfortable.
“But she is.””
Mason nodded slowly.
“We were wrong.””
Tyler looked down.
“We believed whatever Ethan told us.””
Ethan looked at them.
“You believed because you wanted to.””
Mason’s face hardened.
“No.””
He stepped forward.
“You knew exactly what you were doing.””
Ethan smiled slightly.
“And now you want to pretend you’re innocent?””
Nobody answered.
Because he was right about one thing.
They weren’t innocent.
They had chosen to hurt someone.
But they weren’t the person who started it.
Naomi looked at Principal Hayes.
“Who else knows about my father?””
His silence answered before he did.
“Not many.””
“Who?””
He looked at the clock.
Then at the door.
Like he was hoping for a distraction.
Naomi noticed.
“You’re waiting for someone.””
Principal Hayes said nothing.
“You knew we were coming.””
Still nothing.
“Who did you call?””
His expression changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Naomi turned toward Coach Daniels.
“Don’t let him leave.””
Principal Hayes stood.
“Excuse me?””
“You heard me.””
The confidence surprised everyone.
Even herself.
But she wasn’t the same person who sat quietly beside the pool.
Not anymore.
The door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood outside.
Naomi recognized her immediately.
The school accountant.
Mrs. Bennett.
She held a folder in her hands.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
Everyone stared.
“I heard what was happening.””
Principal Hayes looked angry.
“Why are you here?””
Mrs. Bennett walked into the office.
“Because it’s time someone told the truth.””
Naomi watched her carefully.
Another person.
Another secret.
Mrs. Bennett placed the folder on the desk.
“I found these records three years ago.””
Principal Hayes looked shocked.
“You said nothing.””
Mrs. Bennett looked at him.
“You told me to forget what I saw.””
The room froze.
Coach Daniels opened the folder.
Inside were printed financial reports.
Old ones.
New ones.
Patterns.
Transfers.
Names.
Naomi looked at the pages.
Then she saw it.
A connection.
A name appearing again and again.
Not Ethan.
Not Mr. Carter.
Not Principal Hayes.
Someone else.
Someone who had been invisible.
Someone who had access to everything.
Her eyes widened.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
Naomi pointed at the page.
“This account.””
Coach Daniels looked.
“What about it?””
Naomi’s voice became quiet.
“This is the same account the scholarship money was transferred through.””
Mr. Carter stepped closer.
“Yes.””
Naomi looked at the signature.
Her heart stopped.
Because the name at the bottom was familiar.
Too familiar.
She looked at Ethan.
“You knew.””
Ethan stared at the paper.
For once, he looked genuinely surprised.
“No.””
Naomi looked back at the signature.
Then whispered:
“This person was never hiding from the school.””
She swallowed.
“They were hiding in plain sight.””
Mrs. Bennett closed her eyes.
And said the name nobody expected.
“The person who moved the money…”
May you like
A pause.
“…was Naomi’s mother.””
