Chapter 5: The Person Who Handed Her the Key

Naomi knew the person walking toward them.

That was the worst part.

If it had been a stranger, someone she barely knew, someone she could hate without hesitation, it would have been easier.

But it wasn’t.

It was Mr. Carter.

The assistant principal.

The man who had listened when nobody else did.

The man who had sat across from her in his office while she spread fundraiser records across his desk.

The man who had told her, “If something feels wrong, don’t ignore it.””

The man who had given her the key card.

He stopped at the entrance of the pool deck.

His eyes moved across the room.

Naomi.

Coach Daniels.

Callie.

Mason.

Tyler.

Then Ethan.

For a moment, nobody said anything.

Then Mr. Carter spoke.

“Looks like everyone found the answers they were looking for.””

Naomi felt a strange emptiness in her chest.

Not anger.

Not yet.

Just disappointment.

“You knew.””

Mr. Carter looked at her.

“Naomi…”

“No.””

Her voice shook slightly.

“You knew.””

Coach Daniels stepped forward.

“Mr. Carter, we need an explanation.””

He sighed.

“I expected this conversation eventually.””

Ethan smiled.

“Eventually?””

Naomi looked at Ethan.

He wasn’t surprised.

That meant one thing.

They had talked.

“You two were working together.””

Mr. Carter looked at Ethan.

Then back at Naomi.

“It’s not that simple.””

Naomi almost laughed.

Everyone said that when they wanted to avoid the truth.

“It’s never simple when people get caught.””

Callie quietly said:

“She’s right.””

Everyone looked at her.

Callie looked uncomfortable admitting it.

But for once, she wasn’t trying to attack Naomi.

“She’s been right about everything.””

Mason looked at her.

“Are you seriously switching sides now?””

Callie stared at him.

“No.””

She looked at Naomi.

“I’m realizing we were never the ones in control.””

The words surprised everyone.

Ethan’s expression darkened.

“Careful.””

Callie immediately looked away.

Naomi noticed.

The fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Mr. Carter walked onto the pool deck.

“Everyone needs to calm down.””

Coach Daniels shook her head.

“No. We need answers.””

She pointed at the key card records.

“Your name is connected to Naomi’s access.””

Mr. Carter looked at the screen.

Then sighed.

“Yes.””

Naomi stared at him.

“Why?””

He looked at her.

“Because I asked Ethan to investigate the fundraiser.””

Naomi frowned.

“What?””

Ethan looked annoyed.

“You’re really going to explain it like that?””

Mr. Carter ignored him.

“Three weeks ago, I noticed irregularities in the fundraiser reports.””

Naomi’s expression changed.

“You noticed too?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Mr. Carter looked down.

“Because I wasn’t sure who I could trust.””

The answer hurt more than she expected.

Naomi stepped back.

“You used me.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Her voice became stronger.

“You gave me access. You let me look through records. You knew I would find something.””

Mr. Carter opened his mouth.

But Naomi continued.

“You didn’t help me because you believed me.””

She pointed at the key card.

“You helped me because you needed someone to do the work you couldn’t do.””

The silence was heavy.

Mr. Carter didn’t deny it.

That was the worst answer.

Naomi felt her hands tighten.

“So I was just a tool.””

“No.””

Mr. Carter’s voice softened.

“You were the only person brave enough to keep asking questions.””

Naomi looked away.

Because part of her wanted to believe him.

And that made everything harder.

Coach Daniels crossed her arms.

“Let’s return to the main issue.””

She looked at Ethan.

“Who stole the money?””

Ethan laughed quietly.

Everyone turned.

“You still think it’s that simple?””

Naomi looked at him.

“You’re enjoying watching everyone turn against each other.””

Ethan smiled.

“Because now you understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That trust is a weakness.””

Naomi shook her head.

“No.””

Ethan tilted his head.

“No?””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“Trust is what makes people worth protecting.””

For a second, Ethan’s expression changed.

Something almost like anger flashed across his face.

Then it disappeared.

“You still don’t get it.””

“Then explain.””

Ethan looked at Mr. Carter.

“You wanted the truth?””

Mr. Carter’s face tightened.

Ethan continued.

“Tell her what happened after Naomi found the first missing receipt.””

Naomi looked at Mr. Carter.

“What happened?””

Mr. Carter didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

Naomi’s heart sank.

“Tell me.””

Mr. Carter looked away.

“I confronted Ethan.””

“And?””

“He denied everything.””

Naomi waited.

“That’s it?””

Mr. Carter hesitated.

“No.””

The pool deck went quiet.

“He threatened to expose something.””

Naomi frowned.

“Expose what?””

Mr. Carter looked uncomfortable.

“My past.””

Ethan smiled.

“Everyone has something they don’t want people to know.””

Coach Daniels stared at him.

“What did you threaten him with?””

Ethan shrugged.

“I didn’t threaten anyone.””

“You just said he had a secret.””

“I said everyone does.””

Naomi looked between them.

She was missing something.

Something important.

Then she remembered.

The fundraiser.

The money.

The missing envelopes.

The locker.

The accusation.

Everything had been focused on making her look guilty.

But why?

Because she was close to the truth.

Not because she was the target.

Because she was the danger.

“What was the first thing I found?”” Naomi asked.

Nobody answered.

She looked at Ethan.

“You didn’t care that I found missing money.””

Ethan said nothing.

“You cared that I found something else.””

Mr. Carter’s face changed.

Naomi noticed.

“What?””

Mr. Carter closed his eyes.

Then quietly said:

“The fundraiser wasn’t the only account being changed.””

Everyone froze.

Coach Daniels frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Mr. Carter looked at Naomi.

“There were transfers.””

“From where?””

He hesitated.

“The school scholarship fund.””

A wave of shock moved through the group.

Mason whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

Tyler shook his head.

“No way.””

Naomi felt cold.

Because now the missing money made sense.

The fundraiser wasn’t the goal.

It was a distraction.

Someone had stolen something much bigger.

And they needed Naomi blamed before anyone looked deeper.

Callie whispered:

“So Ethan framed her.””

Ethan smiled.

“Not exactly.””

Naomi looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan walked toward the bench.

He picked up the phone showing the footage.

“The reason Naomi was blamed…”

He paused.

“…is because everyone already believed she was easy to blame.””

Naomi felt anger rise.

“You used my reputation.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked her.

Ethan didn’t deny it.

“You were quiet.””

He looked at her.

“You stayed alone.””

“You bullied me because you thought nobody would care.””

“No.””

His eyes sharpened.

“I chose you because people would believe it.””

The words hit harder than any insult.

Because they were the truth.

Ethan had not chosen Naomi because she was weak.

He had chosen her because the world had already underestimated her.

Coach Daniels stepped forward.

“You’re admitting you framed a student?””

Ethan looked at her.

“I’m admitting I understood how people think.””

Naomi stared at him.

“You think you’re smarter than everyone.””

“I am.””

The confidence was almost unbelievable.

Then Naomi noticed something.

A tiny detail.

Something Ethan didn’t realize he had revealed.

“You made one mistake.””

Everyone looked at her.

Ethan smiled.

“And what would that be?””

“You keep saying everyone believed I was weak.””

She stepped closer.

“But you were the only person who knew I wasn’t.””

His smile faded.

Naomi continued.

“You watched me investigate.””

Silence.

“You watched me find the records.””

Another step.

“You watched me refuse to give up.””

She looked directly into his eyes.

“So you knew exactly who I was.””

For the first time, Ethan had no answer.

Naomi turned toward Coach Daniels.

“The person who stole the money didn’t just need someone to blame.””

She looked around the pool deck.

“They needed someone everyone would ignore.””

Mr. Carter looked at her.

“And?””

Naomi stared at Ethan.

“And they picked the wrong person.””

A phone suddenly rang.

Everyone froze.

It wasn’t Ethan’s.

It wasn’t Coach Daniels’.

It was Mr. Carter’s.

He looked at the screen.

The color drained from his face.

Naomi noticed.

“What is it?””

Mr. Carter didn’t answer.

Coach Daniels stepped closer.

“Who is calling?””

Mr. Carter slowly lowered the phone.

His voice barely came out.

“It’s the bank.””

Naomi felt a chill.

“Why would the bank call?””

Mr. Carter looked at her.

Then at Ethan.

And finally said:

“Because someone just tried to transfer the remaining scholarship money.””

Everyone went silent.

Naomi whispered:

“Someone?””

Mr. Carter looked at the name attached to the transaction.

And his face turned pale.

May you like

Because the person who tried to move the money…

was someone standing on the pool deck with them.
