Chapter 4: The Key That Opened the Secret

For the first time that afternoon, Naomi wished Ethan would stop talking.

Not because she was afraid of what he knew.

Because she was afraid of what everyone else would believe.

The pool deck had changed.

Ten minutes ago, Naomi had been the person who exposed a lie.

Now, she was standing in the middle of a new question.

Who gave her access?

Who helped her?

Who else knew?

The silence pressed against her harder than Callie’s insults ever had.

Coach Daniels looked at Naomi.

“Is there something you need to tell us?””

Naomi opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

Because the answer was complicated.

And complicated answers were dangerous when someone like Ethan was waiting for them.

“I didn’t steal anything,” Naomi said.

Ethan smiled.

“That wasn’t my question.””

Naomi looked at him.

“You’re changing the subject.””

“No.””

His voice stayed calm.

“I’m asking the question nobody wants to ask.””

He looked around the pool deck.

“Why did Naomi have a key to the storage room?””

Mason looked at Naomi.

“You did have one?””

Naomi turned toward him.

“I borrowed one.””

“From who?””

She didn’t answer.

Callie crossed her arms.

“There it is.””

Naomi looked at her.

“Don’t.””

“No, seriously.”” Callie stepped forward.

“You spent weeks acting like you were the victim, but you were sneaking into locked rooms.””

“I was looking for proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That Ethan was stealing.””

Ethan laughed.

“And somehow the only person who needed to be investigated was me?””

Naomi stared at him.

“You’re enjoying this.””

“Because the truth is finally coming out.””

Coach Daniels raised her hand.

“Enough.””

Everyone stopped.

She looked at Naomi.

“I need an answer.””

Naomi looked down.

Then she reached into her backpack.

Everyone immediately stepped back.

Mason whispered, “What are you doing?””

Naomi ignored him.

She pulled out a small plastic card.

A key card.

She held it up.

“I didn’t steal this.””

Coach Daniels recognized it.

“That’s a temporary access card.””

Naomi nodded.

“I know.””

“Where did you get it?””

Naomi hesitated.

Then she said:

“From Mr. Carter.””

The name changed the entire atmosphere.

Mr. Carter was the school’s assistant principal.

The person students went to when they needed permission forms signed.

The person parents trusted.

The person who had helped Naomi after she joined the swim team.

Callie’s expression changed.

“Wait.””

She looked at Ethan.

“You knew?””

Ethan didn’t respond.

That was enough.

Naomi noticed.

“You knew Mr. Carter gave me access.””

Ethan looked away for the first time.

Only for a second.

But Naomi saw it.

Coach Daniels frowned.

“Why would Mr. Carter give you a key card?””

Naomi took a breath.

“Because I asked for help.””

The memory returned.

Two weeks earlier.

The empty office.

The stack of fundraiser documents on Mr. Carter’s desk.

Naomi had walked in holding printed spreadsheets.

She remembered how tired she had looked.

How embarrassed she had felt.

Because she didn’t want to accuse anyone.

She just wanted someone to tell her she was wrong.

“I showed him the numbers,” Naomi said.

Coach Daniels listened carefully.

“I told him something didn’t add up.””

“And?””

“He said he would look into it.””

Naomi looked at Ethan.

“But he told me not to talk about it until he understood what was happening.””

Ethan smiled.

“So you were secretly investigating.””

“No.””

“You entered a locked room.””

“Because he gave me permission.””

“Where’s the proof?””

The question hit harder than Naomi expected.

Because she didn’t have a signed document.

She didn’t have a witness standing beside her.

She had trusted someone.

And trust was something people like Ethan knew how to use against you.

Callie suddenly spoke.

“Mr. Carter gave you the key?””

Naomi looked at her.

“Yes.””

Callie’s face became confused.

“But Ethan said…”

She stopped.

Everyone turned toward her.

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Don’t.””

Callie swallowed.

“What?””

“You were about to say something stupid.””

Naomi noticed.

“What did Ethan say?””

Callie looked uncomfortable.

“He said…”

She hesitated.

“He said Naomi probably got the key illegally.””

Naomi stared at Ethan.

“You knew the entire time.””

Ethan shrugged.

“I suspected.””

“No.””

Her voice became sharper.

“You knew because you were there.””

Ethan smiled slightly.

“And now you’re making another accusation without proof.””

Naomi felt the frustration building.

Because that was his game.

He pushed people until they reacted.

Then he used their reaction as evidence against them.

But this time, Naomi didn’t react.

She looked at the camera above the pool.

Then at Coach Daniels.

“Can we check the access records?””

Everyone went quiet.

Coach Daniels looked at her.

“What?””

“The key card.””

Naomi held it up.

“Every card has a record.””

A slow realization crossed Coach Daniels’ face.

She immediately took out her phone.

“If this card was issued properly, there will be a log.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

He recovered quickly.

“I mean, there’s no need to waste time.””

Coach Daniels stared.

“Why not?””

Ethan looked away.

“Because we already have enough.””

“No,” Naomi said.

“We don’t.””

She stepped closer.

“You have a video of me entering a room.””

She pointed toward Ethan.

“You have a recording of me accusing you.””

Then she looked around.

“But you don’t have the part where I discovered what you were doing.””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“And you think a computer record proves that?””

“Yes.””

Naomi looked directly at him.

“Because unlike you, I don’t need people to believe me.””

The words hit.

Even Callie looked surprised.

For the first time, Ethan seemed unsure.

Coach Daniels opened the school security system.

She entered the key card number.

The results appeared.

She stared at the screen.

Then her face changed.

“What?””

Mason stepped forward.

“What does it say?””

Coach Daniels didn’t answer.

Naomi’s heart started beating faster.

“Coach?””

She looked up.

“The card was issued three weeks ago.””

Naomi nodded.

“Exactly.””

“But…”

Coach Daniels hesitated.

“That’s impossible.””

Everyone moved closer.

“Why?””

Coach Daniels turned the screen around.

The access record showed the card number.

The user.

The issue date.

And the person who requested it.

Naomi expected to see her name.

She expected to see Mr. Carter’s name.

Instead, she saw something else.

Ethan Brooks.

Nobody spoke.

Mason stared.

“Ethan?””

Tyler stepped back.

“You requested the card?””

Ethan’s face went blank.

For the first time since he arrived, he had no immediate answer.

Naomi looked at him.

“You gave me the key.””

Ethan said nothing.

“You were the one who made it possible.””

Still nothing.

Coach Daniels looked between them.

“Why would you give Naomi access?””

Ethan finally spoke.

His voice was quiet.

“Because I wanted to know what she would do.””

A chill moved through Naomi.

“What?””

Ethan looked at her.

“I wanted to see if you were actually investigating.””

The pool deck went silent.

Naomi felt something twist in her stomach.

“You set a trap.””

“No.””

His eyes locked onto hers.

“I tested you.””

Coach Daniels shook her head.

“That makes no sense.””

Ethan smiled faintly.

“It will.””

He looked at Naomi.

“You think you found the person behind this.””

A pause.

“But you didn’t.””

Naomi felt the familiar warning inside her.

The feeling she had ignored when she first noticed the missing money.

Something was wrong.

Something was bigger.

Ethan stepped backward.

“Because the person who actually stole the fundraiser money…”

He looked toward the hallway.

“…is the same person who taught you how to find it.””

Everyone turned.

Naomi’s face went cold.

From the hallway came the sound of footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Familiar.

May you like

And when the person appeared at the entrance of the pool deck, Naomi realized Ethan had been waiting for this moment from the beginning.

Because the person walking toward them was the last person she ever expected to see.
