Chapter 2: The Person Nobody Suspected
The person on the screen was standing inside the school fundraiser storage room.
Naomi stopped breathing for a second.
It wasn’t Callie.
It wasn’t Mason.
It wasn’t Tyler.
It was Ethan Brooks.
The student council treasurer.
The boy everyone trusted.
The boy teachers described as responsible.
The boy who had collected every donation envelope, counted every dollar, and smiled while telling everyone how proud he was of the school community.
Naomi stared at the screen.
“No.””
The word escaped before she could stop it.
Coach Daniels looked at her.
“You know him?””
Naomi swallowed.
“Everyone knows Ethan.””
On the security footage, Ethan looked completely different from the person everyone saw during school hours.
The video showed him entering the storage room alone late at night.
He closed the door behind him.
Then he looked directly at the camera.
Not accidentally.
Not because he noticed it.
Because he knew exactly where it was.
Mason’s face changed.
“Wait.””
Tyler looked nervous.
“Why would Ethan be there?””
Callie crossed her arms, but her confidence was gone.
“I told you.””
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked away.
“I told you this wasn’t just about us.””
Coach Daniels narrowed her eyes.
“What does that mean?””
Callie stayed silent.
Naomi noticed.
And for the first time, she realized something important.
Callie wasn’t scared because she had been caught.
She was scared because someone else had been caught first.
The video continued.
Ethan walked toward a locked cabinet where the fundraiser money was stored.
He pulled out a key.
The room went completely silent.
Coach Daniels paused the footage.
“That key was only given to two people.””
Naomi looked at her.
“Who?””
Coach Daniels didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“Me.””
A pause.
“And Ethan.””
The air around them seemed to disappear.
Mason rubbed his forehead.
“This doesn’t make sense.””
Tyler nodded quickly.
“Yeah. Ethan wouldn’t do that.””
Naomi looked at him.
“You said that very confidently.””
Tyler looked uncomfortable.
“Because he’s not like us.””
The words hung there.
Not like us.
Naomi looked at Callie.
Then Mason.
Then Tyler.
“You mean because people trust him?””
Nobody answered.
Coach Daniels pressed play again.
On the screen, Ethan opened the cabinet.
He removed an envelope.
Then another.
Then another.
The fundraiser envelopes.
The ones that had been collected for the school’s new swim equipment.
The money that disappeared.
The money that somehow ended up connected to Naomi.
Ethan placed the envelopes inside his backpack.
Then he stopped.
He looked at the camera again.
A slow smile appeared on his face.
Naomi felt a chill.
Because that smile wasn’t nervous.
It wasn’t guilty.
It was confident.
Like he knew he would never be questioned.
Coach Daniels paused the video.
“That was the night before the money was reported missing.””
Callie spoke quietly.
“So he did it.””
Naomi turned toward her.
“You knew something.””
Callie immediately looked defensive.
“I didn’t.””
“You did.””
“No.””
Naomi stepped closer.
“You knew Ethan was involved.””
Callie looked away.
That was enough.
Coach Daniels noticed too.
“Callie.””
Callie sighed.
“I didn’t know he was stealing.””
“But you knew he was doing something.””
Callie didn’t answer.
Mason looked at her.
“What did you know?””
Callie’s jaw tightened.
For once, she didn’t have an insult ready.
She looked like someone who had been holding a secret too heavy for too long.
“Ethan came to me two weeks ago.””
Naomi folded her arms.
“And?””
Callie hesitated.
“He said Naomi was becoming a problem.””
Naomi frowned.
“A problem?””
Callie looked at the floor.
“He said you were asking too many questions.””
The pool deck became colder.
Naomi remembered.
The fundraiser meeting.
The missing receipts.
The strange numbers on the donation reports.
She had noticed that the totals didn’t match.
She had told Ethan.
She had trusted him.
“He knew,” Naomi whispered.
Coach Daniels looked at her.
“Knew what?””
Naomi stared at the frozen image of Ethan.
“He knew I was checking the records.””
A month earlier, Naomi had volunteered to help organize the fundraiser because the swim team needed new equipment.
She wasn’t popular.
She wasn’t the captain.
She wasn’t someone people noticed.
But she noticed everything.
The missing receipts.
The changed numbers.
The donations that appeared and disappeared from the spreadsheet.
At first, she thought it was an accident.
Then she found a pattern.
Someone had been moving money.
And when she mentioned it to Ethan, his smile had changed.
Just slightly.
Enough that she remembered.
Enough that she should have known.
Coach Daniels looked at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Naomi looked down.
“Because I thought I was wrong.””
The silence after that felt heavier than any accusation.
Mason suddenly spoke.
“So Ethan used us?””
Everyone looked at him.
Mason looked angry now.
Not because he felt guilty.
Because he felt betrayed.
“He told us Naomi was trying to ruin everyone.””
Tyler nodded.
“He said if people started asking questions, the team would lose funding.””
Naomi stared at them.
“And you believed him?””
Mason didn’t answer.
Tyler looked away.
The truth was sitting right there.
They didn’t have a good reason.
They just had an easy target.
Someone quiet.
Someone who didn’t fight back.
Someone they thought would never expose them.
Coach Daniels put her phone away.
“We need to go to the principal.””
Callie immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She realized what she had said.
Then she corrected herself.
“I mean… we need to be careful.””
Coach Daniels stared at her.
“Careful?””
Callie swallowed.
“Ethan has everyone on his side.””
Naomi looked at her.
“What are you afraid he’ll do?””
Callie didn’t respond.
That was the answer.
Before anyone could say anything else, the sound of footsteps echoed from the hallway.
Slow.
Calm.
Confident.
Everyone turned.
Ethan Brooks stood at the entrance of the pool deck.
He was wearing his student council jacket.
His hair was perfectly styled.
A smile rested on his face.
The same smile he wore during assemblies.
The same smile teachers loved.
The same smile that had convinced everyone he was the safest person in the school.
“Wow,” Ethan said.
His eyes moved across the group.
“Looks like I missed something.””
Nobody spoke.
Ethan looked at the wet floor.
Then at Callie.
“Rough practice?””
Callie’s face tightened.
She looked like she wanted to say something.
But she didn’t.
Ethan noticed.
Then he looked at Naomi.
And smiled.
“Naomi.””
She said nothing.
Ethan walked closer.
“You seem upset.””
Coach Daniels stepped between them.
“Ethan, we need to talk.””
He tilted his head.
“About what?””
She held up her phone.
His expression changed.
Only for a moment.
But Naomi saw it.
The smile disappeared.
Then returned.
“You watched the footage.””
It wasn’t a question.
Coach Daniels nodded.
“Yes.””
Ethan looked around.
At Callie.
At Mason.
At Tyler.
Then back at Naomi.
And suddenly Naomi understood.
He wasn’t surprised.
He wasn’t scared.
He had expected this.
“You knew we would find it,” Naomi said.
Ethan looked at her.
“I knew you would try.””
The words made her stomach tighten.
Try.
Not succeed.
Try.
Coach Daniels stepped forward.
“You stole school funds.””
Ethan laughed softly.
“That’s a serious accusation.””
“We have video evidence.””
“Do you?””
He looked at her phone.
Then smiled again.
“Because I think you should watch the entire video.””
Nobody moved.
Coach Daniels frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan reached into his pocket.
Pulled out his own phone.
And held it up.
“Because the part you watched wasn’t the only part.””
Naomi felt something change.
The confidence in Ethan’s voice wasn’t fake.
He wasn’t pretending.
He had another move.
Ethan tapped his screen.
A video appeared.
Then he turned the phone around.
The footage showed the same storage room.
The same night.
The same fundraiser money.
But this time…
May you like
The camera angle was different.
And Naomi’s blood ran cold when she saw who walked into the room next.
