Chapter 3: The Person in the Second Video

The person who walked into the storage room was Naomi.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

The only sound on the pool deck was the faint buzzing of the overhead lights.

Naomi stared at the phone in Ethan’s hand.

“No.””

It came out quietly.

But everyone heard it.

Ethan watched her carefully.

“Interesting reaction.””

Naomi looked at him.

“You know that’s not what happened.””

Ethan smiled.

“That’s exactly what happened.””

Coach Daniels stepped closer.

“Play the video.””

Ethan shrugged.

“Gladly.””

He pressed the screen.

The footage began.

The storage room.

The same night.

The same cabinet.

The same fundraiser envelopes.

But this camera angle showed the entire room.

Ethan entered.

He opened the cabinet.

Then Naomi appeared several minutes later.

She walked in carrying a folder.

She looked around.

Then she approached the table.

Mason immediately pointed.

“There.””

Tyler stared.

“She’s there.””

Callie’s expression changed.

Naomi ignored them.

She watched herself on the screen.

Because she remembered that night.

She remembered why she was there.

But she also knew how it looked.

And Ethan knew that too.

On the video, Naomi opened the folder.

She removed several papers.

Then she looked toward the cabinet.

The footage stopped.

Ethan looked around the pool deck.

“Do you understand what everyone is seeing?””

Naomi didn’t answer.

He stepped closer.

“They see you near the money.””

Coach Daniels’ face remained serious.

“Continue the video.””

Ethan smiled.

“Of course.””

The footage continued.

Naomi walked toward the cabinet.

She unlocked it.

Mason whispered:

“She had the key?””

Naomi turned sharply.

“I didn’t.””

But the video showed her holding something.

A key.

The same kind of key Ethan had used.

The pool deck erupted with whispers.

Callie looked almost relieved.

“Wow.””

Naomi looked at her.

“Don’t.””

Callie raised her hands.

“I didn’t say anything.””

“You didn’t have to.””

Ethan watched the scene unfold like he was enjoying a performance.

Coach Daniels stared at the phone.

“Where did this footage come from?””

Ethan slipped his phone into his pocket.

“The same security system.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

He smiled.

“Someone sent it to me.””

Naomi’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Ethan didn’t respond.

That bothered her more than anything.

Because Ethan was always prepared.

He never made mistakes.

Not in class.

Not in meetings.

Not in conversations.

He always knew exactly what to say.

But this time, he was enjoying being silent.

Coach Daniels turned toward Naomi.

“Did you enter the storage room that night?””

Naomi hesitated.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised everyone.

Callie laughed.

“She admitted it.””

Naomi looked at her.

“I admitted I was there.””

“You were caught stealing.””

“No.””

Ethan interrupted.

“You were caught hiding something.””

Naomi looked at him.

“You’re really going to do this?””

“Do what?””

“Pretend you don’t know why I was there.””

Ethan leaned slightly forward.

“Then explain.””

Naomi looked at the phone.

At the video.

At the people watching her.

Then she took a breath.

“I found something.””

Coach Daniels waited.

Naomi continued.

“The fundraiser numbers were wrong.””

Mason frowned.

“What?””

“The reports didn’t match the receipts.””

Ethan’s expression stayed calm.

But his eyes changed.

Only slightly.

Naomi noticed.

“I checked the records because I was helping organize the equipment purchase.””

She looked at Coach Daniels.

“There were missing entries.””

Coach Daniels frowned.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Ethan told me he would handle it.””

Everyone turned toward Ethan.

He laughed.

“Seriously?””

Naomi shook her head.

“That’s what you said.””

“I said I would look into it.””

“You said I was imagining things.””

Ethan smiled.

“Because you were.””

Naomi stepped closer.

“No. Because you wanted me to stop looking.””

The confidence on Ethan’s face faded for half a second.

Then returned.

Callie noticed too.

“You did know.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Know what?””

“That she was investigating.””

The pool deck became silent.

Ethan’s eyes moved to Callie.

And Naomi saw something she had never seen before.

Annoyance.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Annoyance.

Like Callie had just become inconvenient.

“You should be careful what you say.””

Callie’s face went pale.

A strange feeling settled in Naomi’s chest.

Because suddenly she understood.

Callie wasn’t Ethan’s partner.

She was another person he had used.

Coach Daniels looked between them.

“Enough games.””

She turned toward Ethan.

“You need to come with me to the principal’s office.””

Ethan shook his head.

“I don’t think that’s going to happen.””

Coach Daniels frowned.

“Excuse me?””

He pulled out another phone.

A recording device.

And placed it on the bench.

“I think you should listen first.””

Naomi stared at it.

“What is that?””

“A backup.””

Ethan pressed play.

A voice filled the pool deck.

Naomi recognized it instantly.

Her own voice.

The recording was from the storage room.

But it wasn’t the same video.

It was audio.

Her voice sounded nervous.

“Someone is changing the numbers.””

Then another voice.

Ethan.

“You’re accusing me?””

Naomi’s recorded voice answered.

“I’m asking questions.””

Ethan’s voice became colder.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

The recording continued.

Then Naomi heard herself say:

“If I find proof, I’m going to report it.””

The audio stopped.

Ethan looked at everyone.

“There.””

He pointed toward Naomi.

“She threatened me.””

Naomi stared at him.

“That proves I suspected you.””

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“It proves you had a reason to frame me.””

Nobody spoke.

Because for a second…

It sounded believable.

That was Ethan’s talent.

He didn’t need the truth.

He only needed a version that people could understand quickly.

Coach Daniels looked uncomfortable.

Naomi saw the doubt in her eyes.

Not because Coach Daniels believed Ethan.

Because the situation was messy.

And messy situations were where people like Ethan survived.

He stepped back.

“I think we should let the principal handle this.””

Then he looked at Naomi.

“But before that…”

He paused.

“I have one more thing.””

Naomi felt her stomach tighten.

“What?””

Ethan looked at Callie.

“Tell them.””

Callie froze.

“No.””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Tell them.””

“What are you doing?””

“I’m giving you a chance.””

Callie looked terrified.

Naomi watched the exchange.

The power had shifted.

Ethan wasn’t asking.

He was threatening.

Coach Daniels noticed.

“Callie?””

Callie looked down.

Then slowly spoke.

“Ethan told us to damage Naomi’s locker.””

Mason stared at her.

“What?””

Callie continued.

“He said if Naomi looked guilty enough, nobody would believe anything she said.””

Naomi felt a cold wave pass through her.

“So that was the plan.””

Callie nodded slightly.

“He said everyone would trust him.””

Ethan laughed.

A quiet laugh.

“You’re really blaming me?””

Callie looked up.

“You told us what to do.””

“I gave you advice.””

“You told us to plant the envelope.””

Mason stepped back.

“Wait.””

Tyler looked at Ethan.

“You said it would just scare her.””

Ethan’s face finally changed.

The mask cracked.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You two were never smart enough to understand the whole plan.””

The words fell into the silence.

Mason looked hurt.

Tyler looked angry.

Naomi watched Ethan carefully.

Because there it was.

The mistake.

The one thing people like Ethan always made.

They underestimated everyone.

Coach Daniels picked up the recording device.

“You’re done.””

Ethan smiled.

“No.””

He looked directly at Naomi.

“You still don’t know the biggest part.””

Naomi didn’t blink.

“What part?””

Ethan stepped closer.

“The fundraiser money wasn’t the only thing that disappeared.””

Nobody moved.

“What are you talking about?”” Coach Daniels asked.

Ethan looked at Naomi.

“Ask her where she got that key.””

Naomi frowned.

“I already told you.””

“No.””

His smile returned.

“The real question is…”

He leaned closer.

“Who gave Naomi access to the storage room?””

Everyone turned toward her.

Naomi felt her heart drop.

Because suddenly she remembered something.

A conversation.

A favor.

A person who had offered to help her weeks ago.

A person she never suspected.

Ethan looked at the others.

“And when you find out who helped her…”

May you like

He paused.

“You’ll realize Naomi wasn’t the only person lying.””
