Chapter 11: The Brother Who Planned Everything

Marcus replayed the recording.

Andrew.

His own brother.

The man who had taught him to ride a bicycle, stood beside him at their father's funeral, and promised to protect the family business.

The man who had just tried to take Maya from him.

“Rebecca, explain exactly what you mean.””

“I can't do this over the phone.””

“Then tell me where you are.””

“I'm sending you an address.””

A message appeared.

Marcus opened it.

It was a private medical facility on the outskirts of the city.

“Why are you there?””

“Because Andrew has been trying to have me declared mentally unfit.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Rebecca continued.

“He wants to remove me as Maya's financial guardian permanently. He's already paid someone to prepare the documents.””

Marcus felt his anger rise.

“I'm coming.””

“Don't bring the police.””

“Rebecca—”

“Please. If Andrew learns I'm talking to you, he'll disappear with the evidence.””

The call ended.

Daniel shook his head.

“Marcus, this is a trap.””

“Maybe.””

“You can't walk into a private facility without knowing who's inside.””

Marcus picked up the flash drive.

“Then we'll find out before we go.””

He called his security director.

Within twenty minutes, Daniel had obtained the facility's ownership records.

It was registered to a medical holding company controlled by Andrew.

Marcus stared at the screen.

“He owns the place?””

“Indirectly.””

“Then Rebecca isn't there voluntarily.””

Daniel nodded.

“We should contact the police.””

Marcus looked at the photograph of his mother carrying Maya away from the wreckage.

“Get the police. But we're not waiting.””

At 2:10 a.m., Marcus arrived outside the facility with two security officers.

The building looked more like a luxury hotel than a hospital.

Large windows. Manicured lawns. A fountain near the entrance.

A receptionist stood behind a marble desk.

“Can I help you?””

“I'm looking for Rebecca Hayes.””

The receptionist glanced at her computer.

“I'm afraid we can't release patient information.””

Marcus placed his business card on the desk.

“I'm her family.””

“Do you have authorization?””

“No. But I have a court petition showing that her medical records were used in a fraudulent attempt to remove her as my daughter's financial guardian.””

The receptionist looked uncomfortable.

“Sir, I can't—”

A voice interrupted.

“Marcus?””

He turned.

A young woman stood near the elevator.

She had dark brown hair, tired eyes, and a leather backpack.

“I'm Sophie.””

Marcus immediately recognized the resemblance to Rebecca.

“Your mother?””

Sophie nodded.

“She's upstairs. But we need to leave.””

“Is she safe?””

“Not really.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Why?””

Sophie looked around before answering.

“Because Andrew has been visiting her every day. Yesterday he brought documents for her to sign. When she refused, he told the staff she was becoming aggressive.””

Marcus clenched his jaw.

“Can we see her?””

Sophie hesitated.

“There's something you need to know first.””

She opened her backpack and removed a small envelope.

“Mom told me to give you this only if you came without Vanessa.””

Marcus stared.

“Why would Vanessa matter?””

Sophie looked directly at him.

“Because Vanessa is the reason Andrew knows where my mother is.””

Marcus went still.

“What?””

“She gave him the address.””

Sophie lowered her voice.

“And she also gave him something else.””

“What?””

“A copy of the original DNA test.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Sophie continued.

“Your wife had the test done before she died. It proved Andrew was Maya's biological father.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“We already know.””

Sophie shook her head.

“No. You don't know the most important part.””

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a second laboratory report.

It contained two sets of results.

The first compared Andrew's DNA with Maya's.

The second compared Marcus's DNA with Maya's.

Marcus looked at the figures.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he stopped.

He read the results again.

The report showed that Andrew was biologically related to Maya.

But it also showed that Marcus was her biological father.

Marcus looked up.

“What is this?””

Sophie swallowed.

“Your wife discovered that the hospital had mixed two newborn records.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

“Meaning?””

“Maya's biological father is you. Andrew's sample was attached to the wrong record.””

Marcus stared at the report.

“Then why did the original test say Andrew was her father?””

“Because the first sample was deliberately switched.””

Sophie pointed to the dates.

“Elena discovered the error before she died. She paid for an independent test. It confirmed that you were Maya's biological father.””

Marcus felt tears burn behind his eyes.

His daughter.

His little girl.

His.

He had never needed a laboratory report to know that.

But now the evidence destroyed the last weapon Andrew had against him.

“Why didn't Elena tell me?””

Sophie looked down.

“Because she wanted to confront Andrew with the complete evidence. She believed telling you before she had proof would only create more danger.””

Marcus folded the report carefully.

“Where is the original?””

Sophie tapped the envelope.

“This is a certified copy. The original is with my mother.””

Marcus looked toward the elevator.

“Take me to her.””

Rebecca was in a private room on the second floor.

She looked older than Marcus remembered.

Her hair was tied back, and a small bruise marked her wrist.

When she saw him, she began crying.

“Marcus.””

He crossed the room.

“I'm getting you out of here.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“Not until you hear everything.””

He looked at the bruise.

“Did Andrew do that?””

“No. But he made sure nobody believed me when I said I was being threatened.””

Marcus pulled a chair beside her bed.

“Tell me about the accident.””

Rebecca closed her eyes.

“Andrew called Margaret that night. He told her Elena was leaving town with Maya and the documents.””

“Was she?””

“No. She was going to the police.””

Rebecca swallowed.

“Andrew convinced your mother that Elena was about to destroy the family. He told her that if the documents became public, Maya would lose her inheritance.””

Marcus stared.

“So my mother followed her.””

“Yes. But Andrew gave her instructions.””

“What instructions?””

“He told her to stop Elena and recover the documents.””

Rebecca looked down.

“Your mother didn't know Andrew planned to follow them.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“And the collision?””

“Margaret's car struck Elena's vehicle. Elena lost control. Margaret panicked.””

“Then she took Maya.””

Rebecca nodded.

“I helped her because Maya was injured and we thought she needed medical attention.””

“Why didn't you call an ambulance?””

Rebecca began crying.

“Andrew arrived. He said the police would blame everyone if they found the documents. He promised to take Maya to a private clinic.””

Marcus stood.

“You let him?””

“I was twenty-nine years old, Marcus. I was terrified. I believed he was helping.””

“And afterward?””

“Your mother arranged for Maya to stay with Helen. She wanted to protect her until things calmed down.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You all made decisions about my daughter without telling me.””

Rebecca nodded.

“I know.””

He looked at her.

“Why did Vanessa want to remove you as guardian?””

Rebecca's expression changed.

“Because I know where Elena hid the original inheritance agreement.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Where?””

Rebecca pointed toward Sophie's backpack.

“Inside that envelope is a second key.””

Marcus looked at Sophie.

She opened the bag and handed him a small brass key.

Rebecca continued.

“It belongs to a safety deposit box. Elena opened it under a false name.””

“What's inside?””

“The original trust agreement, the unaltered birth records, and a signed statement from Andrew.””

Marcus frowned.

“What statement?””

Rebecca looked directly at him.

“A confession.””

Silence filled the room.

Then she whispered:

“Andrew admitted that he switched the hospital samples because he wanted Maya's inheritance rights. But he also admitted something worse.””

Marcus waited.

Rebecca's voice dropped.

“He knew Margaret was going to confront Elena that night. He knew there might be an accident.””

Marcus felt a wave of anger.

“Why?””

“Because he wanted Elena to disappear before she could expose him.””

Marcus stepped backward.

His brother hadn't simply benefited from the accident.

He had anticipated it.

Possibly even encouraged it.

A knock sounded at the door.

Everyone turned.

A nurse entered.

“Mr. Carter, there's someone downstairs asking for you.””

“Who?””

The nurse looked uncomfortable.

“Your wife.””

Marcus's face hardened.

“Vanessa?””

“Yes. She says she has information about your daughter.””

Sophie stood.

“Don't let her in.””

But Marcus was already walking toward the door.

He wanted to know what Vanessa was hiding.

And he was done allowing her to control the timing of the truth.

Vanessa was waiting in the reception area.

She wore a black dress and carried a leather folder.

When she saw Marcus, she smiled weakly.

“Thank God.””

He didn't return the expression.

“What do you want?””

“To help you.””

“You've done enough.””

Vanessa glanced toward Sophie.

“Is Rebecca upstairs?””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Why?””

“Because Andrew is planning to have her transferred.””

“Where?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“To a facility outside the country.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Why would you know that?””

She opened the folder.

Inside was a travel authorization, a medical transfer request, and a list of financial payments.

At the bottom of the last page was Andrew's signature.

Marcus looked up.

“Why are you giving me this?””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“Because I made a mistake.””

“You made several.””

“I know.””

“Then start telling the truth.””

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Andrew didn't just want Maya's inheritance.””

Marcus waited.

“He wanted to take control of your entire company.””

Marcus frowned.

“How does Maya fit into that?””

Vanessa looked toward the elevator.

“Because if Andrew could prove that Maya was his biological daughter, he could challenge the family succession agreement and claim the controlling shares.””

Marcus felt his jaw tighten.

“But the independent test proves I'm her father.””

Vanessa nodded.

“And Andrew knows that now.””

“Then why is he still fighting?””

She hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“Because he has another child.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Vanessa's voice broke.

“Andrew has a son. He's been hiding him for years.””

She placed a photograph on the desk.

It showed Andrew standing beside a teenage boy.

The boy was wearing a school uniform.

Marcus looked at the name written on the back.

*Ethan Carter. Age 15.*

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Andrew plans to use his son to claim the inheritance if Maya's claim fails.””

Marcus studied the photograph.

Then he noticed something else.

The boy's mother was standing beside them.

A woman Marcus recognized from the hospital footage.

The woman who had been near Elena's car that night.

The woman wearing red shoes.

Rebecca's daughter?

No.

Marcus looked again.

It was Margaret's former personal assistant.

A woman who had supposedly moved overseas years ago.

Vanessa whispered:

“Marcus, Andrew didn't arrange the accident to get Maya's inheritance.””

She paused.

“He arranged it because Elena had discovered who his first child really was.””

Marcus looked up.

“Who?””

May you like

Vanessa's answer changed everything.

“Ethan isn't Andrew's son.””
