Chapter 6: The Truth About Maya's Birth

Marcus didn't move.
For several seconds, he simply stared at Olivia.
“What did you just say?””
Olivia looked toward Maya.
The little girl was sitting beside the desk, holding her stuffed rabbit.
“Marcus, I need you to understand that Elena loved Maya. She was her mother in every way that mattered.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“Don't tell me what my wife felt. Tell me what you meant.””
Olivia took a breath.
“The hospital records were altered. Elena discovered the discrepancy shortly after Maya was born.””
“Discrepancy?””
“The original records listed a different biological father.””
Marcus felt his stomach turn.
He looked at Maya.
Then back at Olivia.
“Are you saying Maya isn't my biological daughter?””
Olivia lowered her eyes.
“I'm saying the records suggest that.””
The words landed heavily.
Marcus stepped backward.
He gripped the edge of the desk.
“No.””
“Marcus—”
“No. I was there when she was born. I held her.
I signed the paperwork. I raised her.””
“I know.””
“I watched her take her first steps. I taught her to ride a bicycle. I stayed awake when she had a fever.””
Olivia's eyes filled.
“I know.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Then explain how someone could change a birth certificate without me knowing.””
Olivia placed her handbag on the floor.
“Because someone inside the hospital had access to the original records.””
“Who?””
“Dr. Richard Hayes.””
Marcus frowned.
“Who is that?””
“He was the attending physician during Elena's delivery.””
“And?””
Olivia hesitated.
“He was also closely connected to your family.””
Marcus searched his memory.
Then the name struck him.
Richard Hayes was Rebecca's husband.
Elena's brother-in-law.
The man who had attended family dinners, holiday celebrations, and Maya's birthdays.
Marcus slowly sat down.
“Why would he do that?””
Olivia opened her handbag and removed a folder.
“Because Elena found evidence that the original records had been changed in exchange for money.””
“From whom?””
Olivia looked at him.
“Andrew.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
For a moment, he heard nothing but the ticking of the old clock.
Then he asked, “What did Andrew have to gain?””
Olivia opened the folder.
“The truth is more complicated than you think.””
She removed a document.
It was a photocopy of an original hospital record.
The biological father field contained a name.
Marcus read it.
His stomach dropped.
*Andrew Carter.*
He stared at the page.
Then he laughed once.
Not because anything was funny.
Because the alternative was to scream.
“My brother?””
Olivia nodded.
Marcus looked away.
He remembered Andrew holding newborn Maya.
He remembered his brother joking about how beautiful she was.
He remembered Andrew telling him that Maya had his eyes.
And he remembered Elena's expression that day.
She had looked uncomfortable.
He had assumed she was simply exhausted after giving birth.
“Did Elena know?”” he asked.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Several weeks after Maya was born.””
Marcus looked up sharply.
“Then why did she stay with me?””
Olivia's voice softened.
“Because she knew you loved Maya. And because she believed Andrew had no intention of being a father.””
Marcus's hands curled into fists.
“Did my wife have an affair with my brother?””
Olivia didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she opened another document.
“This is why I came here.””
The paper was a private letter from Elena.
It was dated two months before Maya's birth.
Marcus began reading.
Andrew,
I am writing this because I refuse to let you rewrite what happened.
What happened between us was a mistake. I was vulnerable, and you knew it. You promised it would never happen again.
Marcus does not deserve this. And neither does the child.
You have already made your position clear. You don't want responsibility, and I won't force it on you.
But if you ever try to use this against Marcus or Maya, I will tell him everything.
Marcus stopped reading.
He looked at Olivia.
“Was this real?””
“Yes.””
“Did Elena tell you?””
“She told me everything.””
Marcus stood and walked toward the window.
Outside, the lake was still.
He remembered Elena laughing in the kitchen. Her hand resting on his shoulder. Her voice calling him the best father in the world.
He remembered all the nights he had spent beside Maya's bed.
All the drawings she had made for him.
All the times she had called him Daddy.
He turned around.
“Does Maya know?””
Olivia shook her head.
“No. And I don't believe she should be told until you understand everything.””
Marcus nodded.
He walked back toward his daughter.
Maya was watching him.
“Daddy?””
He crouched beside her.
“I'm here, baby.””
“Why are you sad?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Sometimes grown-ups discover things they don't understand right away.””
“Did Mommy do something bad?””
He looked into her eyes.
“No. Mommy loved you.””
Maya hugged his neck.
“I love Mommy too.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Me too, sweetheart.””
Olivia watched them silently.
Then she spoke.
“There's something else.””
Marcus slowly stood.
“What now?””
“Andrew wasn't the only person who knew.””
She placed another photograph on the desk.
It showed Vanessa standing outside a hospital room.
The date was November 14.
The day Maya was born.
Marcus picked it up.
“Why was she there?””
Olivia looked toward the hallway.
“Because she was already involved with Andrew at that time.””
Marcus stared at the photograph.
“How?””
“Vanessa was working for Andrew's private investment company. She helped arrange the payment to Dr. Hayes.””
Marcus felt a wave of nausea.
“Why would she care about Maya's birth?””
Olivia opened another file.
“Because Andrew believed that if the truth about Maya's biological father ever became public, it could affect his position in the family business.””
Marcus frowned.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does when you understand the Carter family inheritance agreement.””
Olivia pointed to a section of the document.
“Your father established a special provision. If either son died without a biological child, his ownership shares would transfer to the surviving brother's direct descendants.””
Marcus stared.
His father had died before Maya was born.
The provision had been designed to protect the family company.
But there was another condition.
If Andrew had a biological child before Marcus, that child could potentially become the primary beneficiary of certain family assets.
Marcus slowly looked up.
“So Andrew wanted Maya to be recognized as his daughter?””
Olivia nodded.
“But he didn't want to raise her. He wanted the inheritance rights without the responsibility.””
Marcus felt sick.
“And Vanessa?””
Olivia's expression hardened.
“She wanted to control the money.””
Marcus looked down at the documents.
“Then why is she trying to take Maya away from me now?””
Olivia hesitated.
“Because she has discovered that Elena left another document.””
“What document?””
“The original family inheritance agreement. It contains a provision that neither Andrew nor Vanessa knew existed.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“What provision?””
Olivia opened her handbag again.
She removed a folded page.
At the top was the Carter family crest.
Below it was a handwritten amendment signed by Marcus's father.
Olivia pointed to one paragraph.
“Your father anticipated a situation in which one of his sons might try to claim another son's child for financial advantage.””
Marcus read the clause.
Then he read it again.
The provision was clear.
A child raised and legally recognized by a Carter son could receive the family's protected inheritance, regardless of biological parentage.
But there was one additional requirement.
The child had to remain in the care of the father who had raised her.
Marcus felt his heart pounding.
“So they can't take her inheritance simply because Andrew is her biological father.””
“Correct.””
“And they can't remove me as her legal father without proving I'm unfit.””
“Correct.””
Marcus stared at Olivia.
“Then why go to all this trouble?””
Olivia's face changed.
“Because there's another part of the agreement.””
She turned the page.
The final paragraph contained a condition that made Marcus's blood run cold.
If the legal father voluntarily relinquished parental rights, the biological father could petition for control of the inheritance.
Marcus looked up.
“They want me to give her up?””
Olivia nodded.
“That's what I believe.””
A sudden crash came from the hallway.
Marcus turned.
Maya was standing near the doorway.
Her stuffed rabbit had fallen to the floor.
Her face was pale.
“Daddy?””
Marcus rushed toward her.
“Sweetheart?””
She looked from him to Olivia.
Then she whispered something that neither adult had expected.
“Is Uncle Andrew my real daddy?””
Marcus froze.
Olivia closed her eyes.
Maya began to cry.
“I heard you.””
Marcus dropped to his knees.
“Baby, listen to me.””
“Then why does he want me?””
Marcus reached for her hands.
“Because some grown-ups make terrible choices. But none of that changes who loves you.””
Maya shook her head.
“Did Mommy know?””
Marcus couldn't lie.
“Yes, sweetheart. Mommy knew.””
“Did you?””
He paused.
“No. I didn't know.””
Maya looked at him for a long moment.
Then she asked the question that broke his heart.
“If I'm not really yours, do I still get to live with you?””
Marcus pulled her into his arms.
“Nothing in this world could make me stop being your daddy.””
She clung to him.
“I don't want another daddy.””
“You don't have to choose anyone.””
He kissed her forehead.
“You are my daughter. That will never change.””
Olivia quietly stepped away, giving them a moment.
But Marcus's phone began vibrating.
Daniel.
Marcus answered.
“Tell me.””
“Marcus, we have a serious situation.””
“What?””
“Andrew just filed an emergency petition requesting temporary custody of Maya.””
Marcus looked at his daughter.
“On what grounds?””
Daniel hesitated.
“He submitted a DNA report.””
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
“What DNA report?””
“The report claims that you're not Maya's biological father.””
Marcus looked toward Olivia.
She had gone pale.
Daniel continued.
“And there's something worse. The report was signed by a laboratory that claims to have tested samples from both you and Maya.””
Marcus's voice became ice.
“I never gave anyone a DNA sample.””
“I know. But Andrew has submitted the paperwork anyway.””
Marcus ended the call.
He looked at Olivia.
“Can they fake a DNA test?””
Olivia nodded slowly.
“They can fake a report. But they can't fake the original samples forever.””
Marcus looked down at Maya.
Then at the document on the desk.
His brother had spent years manipulating records, moving money, and hiding the truth.
But now he had made one mistake.
He had turned the battle into a legal fight over a little girl who had never asked to be part of their lies.
Marcus picked up his phone.
“Daniel, contact the best forensic laboratory in the country. I want independent testing. I also want every person involved in Andrew's petition investigated.””
“Understood.””
“And Daniel?””
“Yes?””
“Find out where Vanessa is.””
Daniel paused.
“She's at your house.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why?””
“She arrived twenty minutes ago. She told the staff she was collecting Maya's belongings.””
Marcus looked at his daughter.
Then his phone vibrated again.
A message from Vanessa appeared.
*Marcus, we need to talk. I know what Olivia told you. But there's something she hasn't mentioned. Ask her what happened the night Elena died.*
Marcus slowly lowered the phone.
He turned toward Olivia.
Her face had lost all its color.
“What happened the night my wife died?””
Olivia opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, Maya whispered something.
“Daddy?””
He turned.
The little girl was holding the silver key from Elena's letter.
“There was another note inside Bunny.””
Marcus frowned.
“What note?””
Maya carefully opened the rabbit's pocket.
She pulled out a tiny folded piece of paper.
Marcus unfolded it.
Three words were written in Elena's handwriting.
*ASK ABOUT VANESSA.*
Below them was a date.
The date Elena died.
Marcus looked up.
Olivia was crying.
May you like
And suddenly, he understood that the biggest secret in the Carter family might not be who Maya's biological father was.
It might be what had happened to the woman who knew the truth first.
