Chapter 5: The Secret in the Little Girl's Drawing

Marcus left the sitting room without waiting for Andrew's permission.

He found Maya sitting on the kitchen floor with a box of colored pencils.

She had spread several sheets of paper across the tiles.

A small stuffed rabbit rested beside her.

“Hey, princess.””

Maya looked up.

“Daddy, can we go home now?””

Marcus crouched.

“Yes. We're going home.””

She hesitated.

“Are you going to be mad at Uncle Andrew?””

Marcus glanced toward the hallway.

“Why would you ask that?””

Maya picked up a yellow pencil.

“He told me not to tell you something.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

He kept his voice gentle.

“What did he tell you?””

Maya looked toward the door.

“He said grown-up things are private.””

Marcus sat beside her.

“Sometimes grown-ups have private conversations. But nobody should make you feel scared about telling me something.””

Maya nodded slowly.

“Even if it's about Vanessa?””

“Especially then.””

She looked down at her drawing.

Marcus noticed that she had drawn a large house with three people standing outside it.

A man.

A woman.

And a little girl.

There was also a black car near the gate.

“Is that our house?”” he asked.

Maya nodded.

“It's the old house.””

“Who are these people?””

“Me, you, and Mommy.””

Marcus swallowed.

“You remember Mommy?””

Maya nodded.

“She wore a blue dress in this picture.””

Marcus studied the drawing.

He hadn't expected that.

“Where did you see this?””

Maya pointed toward the stuffed rabbit.

“Inside Bunny's pocket.””

Marcus looked at the toy.

It was an old rabbit Elena had bought for Maya when she was a baby.

He remembered its worn ears and one slightly loose button.

“What do you mean, sweetheart?””

Maya carefully turned the rabbit over.

A small seam had been stitched along its back.

“Mommy put something inside before she went to heaven.””

Marcus stopped breathing for a moment.

“Did she tell you that?””

Maya nodded.

“She said if I ever felt scared, I should keep Bunny close. And if somebody was mean to me, I should show Daddy the secret.””

Marcus's hands trembled.

“Why didn't you tell me before?””

Maya looked embarrassed.

“Because I forgot where it was.””

She gently pulled at the loose seam.

A tiny folded piece of paper slipped out.

Marcus carefully unfolded it.

Inside was a small silver key and a handwritten message.

My sweet Maya,

If you are reading this with Daddy, remember that you are loved. Never let anyone tell you otherwise.

There is a truth about our family that Daddy deserves to know.

The key belongs to the little blue box in Grandma's study.

Please give it to Daddy.

Love, Mommy.

Marcus stared at the handwriting.

He recognized every curve.

Every carefully formed letter.

Elena had written this for their daughter.

And somehow, it had survived years of being hidden inside a stuffed rabbit.

“Daddy?”” Maya whispered.

He looked up.

“I'm okay, baby.””

“Are you crying?””

Marcus wiped his cheek.

“Just a little.””

Maya leaned against him.

He held her for a moment before carefully putting the key into his pocket.

Then he called Daniel.

“Get me the address of the old family estate's storage property. I need to know whether Grandma's study is still intact.””

Daniel responded immediately.

“It should be. The estate was never fully renovated.””

“Good. And I need you to find someone.””

“Who?””

Marcus described the young woman in Elena's photograph.

Daniel was silent for several seconds.

“I think I know who you're talking about.””

“Who?””

“Her name is Olivia Bennett. She worked as Elena's personal assistant.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why haven't I heard that name?””

“Because she resigned shortly before Elena died.””

“Where is she?””

“We're checking.””

Marcus ended the call.

He looked down at Maya.

“Do you want to come with me to find something Mommy left?””

Maya nodded.

“Will Bunny come too?””

Marcus smiled.

“Bunny is coming.””

They left the estate under the supervision of Marcus's security team.

Andrew watched from the front window.

He didn't try to stop them.

But as Marcus's car disappeared beyond the gates, Andrew pulled out his phone.

“She's shown him the key,” he said.

A woman's voice answered.

“Then we have a problem.””

Andrew looked toward the empty kitchen.

“Marcus is going to the study.””

“Stop him.””

“I can't. He's already left.””

The woman exhaled sharply.

“Then get to the study before he does.””

Andrew lowered his voice.

“Vanessa, what exactly did Elena leave there?””

The line went silent.

Then Vanessa answered.

“Something that could destroy all of us.””

The old family estate stood on a hill overlooking a lake.

Its wooden floors creaked, and the curtains smelled faintly of dust and lavender.

Marcus hadn't entered the house in almost five years.

He remembered the study immediately.

His mother had loved that room. It had dark wooden shelves, a fireplace, and a large blue cabinet near the window.

Maya held his hand as they walked inside.

“Is Grandma here?””

“No, sweetheart.””

“Does she know Mommy left something?””

Marcus smiled sadly.

“I think she would have wanted us to find it.””

He moved toward the cabinet.

The little silver key fit into a narrow lock near the bottom.

There was a click.

Inside sat a small blue box.

Marcus lifted it onto the desk.

Maya climbed onto a chair beside him.

The box contained three things.

A USB drive.

A stack of photographs.

And a sealed envelope addressed to Marcus.

He opened the envelope first.

Marcus,

If this box has been opened, then my fears were justified.

I need you to understand that I never wanted to hide the truth from you. I only wanted to protect Maya until I could be certain who was involved.

The money in her trust is not the reason they are interested in her.

There is something far more valuable connected to her birth.

Marcus stopped reading.

He glanced at Maya.

Then he continued.

When Maya was born, I discovered an irregularity in the hospital records. I initially believed it was a clerical error.

But after investigating, I realized someone had deliberately altered an important document.

The original record is stored on the USB drive.

Please watch it before confronting anyone.

And Marcus, if you discover that the person responsible is someone we both trusted, remember that I made these arrangements because I knew you would always protect our daughter.

Marcus lowered the letter.

His daughter.

An altered birth record?

He looked at the photographs.

One showed Elena holding newborn Maya in a hospital bed.

Another showed Andrew standing beside a hospital nurse.

The third photograph was the most disturbing.

It showed Vanessa outside the same hospital.

She was holding a document.

On the back, Elena had written:

*November 14. The day everything changed.*

Marcus stared at the date.

It was the day Maya had been born.

His hands began to shake.

He inserted the USB drive into his laptop.

There was only one video file.

The recording showed Elena sitting in the same study.

She looked exhausted, but her eyes were clear.

“Marcus,” she began.

He leaned closer.

“If you're watching this, I need you to listen carefully. Maya is our daughter. I have never doubted that. But the records surrounding her birth contain a secret that someone has been desperate to keep hidden.””

Elena glanced toward the camera.

“I discovered that the original hospital records were changed. The person who requested those changes was—”

The screen suddenly went black.

Marcus frowned.

He checked the laptop.

The video had stopped.

A message appeared.

*FILE ACCESS RESTRICTED.*

He tried again.

Nothing.

Then he heard footsteps behind him.

“Marcus?””

He turned.

A woman stood in the doorway.

Her dark hair was tied back, and she wore a gray coat.

Marcus recognized her from the photograph.

Olivia Bennett.

She looked at Maya.

Then at the open blue box.

Her face went pale.

“Oh, God,” she whispered.

Marcus stood.

“Who are you?””

Olivia swallowed.

“I'm the person who helped your wife uncover the truth.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

She glanced toward the windows.

“Not here.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You have five seconds to explain why my wife's birth records were altered.””

Olivia looked directly at him.

May you like

Then she said something that made the room feel suddenly smaller.

“Because Maya's biological father was never supposed to be listed as you.””
