Chapter 14: The Final Betrayal

Marcus played the recording again.
Vanessa.
The woman who had humiliated Maya.
The woman who had stood in his garden pretending the little girl didn't belong.
The woman who had later claimed to be helping him uncover the truth.
She had been driving the vehicle that struck Elena's car.
Marcus stood abruptly.
“Where is Vanessa?””
Daniel checked his phone.
“She left the estate twenty minutes ago.””
“Find her.””
Vanessa was at the Carter Development headquarters.
She was standing inside the executive conference room when Marcus entered.
Andrew sat at the head of the table.
Margaret Ellis was beside him.
Three attorneys were reviewing documents.
Vanessa looked up.
Her face changed immediately.
“Marcus?””
He placed the voice recorder on the table.
“Play it.””
Andrew frowned.
“What is this?””
“Your confession.””
Andrew laughed.
“You're becoming paranoid.””
Marcus pressed the button.
Andrew's recorded voice filled the room.
That should have ended the problem. My mother was supposed to make sure Elena never reached the police.
Margaret's face went pale.
Vanessa stepped backward.
Andrew reached for the recorder.
Marcus moved it away.
“Sit down.””
Andrew stood.
“You don't give me orders.””
Marcus looked directly at him.
“You've spent fifteen years lying to this family.””
Andrew's expression hardened.
“You have no idea what you're talking about.””
“Then tell me why Vanessa was driving the SUV that hit Elena.””
Silence.
Vanessa began crying.
Andrew looked at her.
“Don't say anything.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“Is it true?””
Vanessa shook her head.
Andrew stepped closer.
“Marcus, this is a family matter.””
“No. This is a criminal investigation.””
Andrew laughed.
“You think the police will believe you?””
Marcus opened his briefcase.
He removed the original hospital records, the signed confession, and the video footage.
“They already have copies.””
Andrew's smile disappeared.
Margaret slowly stood.
“Perhaps we should all calm down.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You first.””
She lowered herself back into her chair.
Vanessa finally spoke.
“I didn't know Elena was going to die.””
Marcus turned.
“Tell me exactly what happened.””
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
“Andrew told me to follow Elena. He said she had stolen important company documents.””
“And you believed him?””
“I wanted to believe him.””
“Why?””
“Because I was pregnant.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at Andrew.
“I was pregnant with his child. He promised me that if I helped him secure the inheritance, we'd finally have the life he promised.””
Andrew slammed his hand on the table.
“Shut up!””
Vanessa flinched.
Marcus stared at her.
“You were pregnant?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Vanessa looked down.
“I lost the baby several weeks after Elena's accident.””
Marcus felt no sympathy for Andrew.
But he understood, for the first time, how completely Vanessa had allowed herself to become part of his brother's plans.
She continued.
“Andrew told me to drive behind Elena. He said I only needed to frighten her into stopping.””
“And then?””
“I got too close. Her car swerved. I tried to brake, but I hit the rear side.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Did you call emergency services?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Andrew arrived a few minutes later. He told me to leave. He said he'd take care of everything.””
Marcus looked at Andrew.
“You left my wife to die.””
Andrew shook his head.
“She was already dead.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You don't know that.””
Andrew's voice rose.
“She was going to destroy us!””
Marcus stared.
“Us?””
Andrew laughed bitterly.
“You think Father would have left everything to you if he knew what Elena had discovered? You think the board would have allowed you to keep the company?””
Marcus shook his head.
“So you decided to destroy my family first?””
Andrew stood.
“I was protecting what belonged to me.””
“Your father's company?””
“Our father's company!””
“You had a job. You had money. You had a future. But that wasn't enough.””
Andrew's face twisted.
“You always got everything!””
Marcus stared at him.
“What did I get?””
“Father's trust. His respect. His company.
His wife. His daughter.””
Marcus took a breath.
“Elena wasn't something you could take.””
Andrew looked away.
For the first time, he seemed unable to answer.
Then Margaret Ellis stood again.
“Andrew, perhaps you should stop speaking.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“Why?””
She looked at the door.
Two uniformed officers entered.
Daniel followed them.
“We have a warrant,” Daniel said.
Andrew's expression changed.
“For what?””
The senior officer stepped forward.
“Mr. Andrew Carter, you're being detained in connection with financial fraud, evidence tampering, and suspected involvement in the death of Elena Carter.””
Andrew laughed.
“This is ridiculous.””
The officer placed a document on the table.
“Your legal representative can explain the charges.””
Vanessa began sobbing.
Marcus looked at her.
“You're coming too.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
But just as the officers approached, Margaret Ellis reached for her handbag.
Daniel noticed.
“Don't move.””
She froze.
The bag fell open.
A small handgun slid across the carpet.
Everyone went silent.
The officer immediately restrained her.
Marcus stared.
“Why are you carrying that?””
Margaret said nothing.
Daniel bent down and retrieved the bag.
Inside was a passport, a plane ticket, and a second flash drive.
Marcus looked at the ticket.
A one-way flight to London.
Scheduled for that evening.
He turned toward Margaret.
“You were planning to disappear.””
She looked at him coldly.
“I was protecting myself.””
“From what?””
“From your brother.””
Marcus frowned.
“What did you do?””
Margaret smiled faintly.
“You still don't understand, do you?””
The officer tightened his grip.
“Mrs. Ellis, you're under arrest.””
But Margaret kept her eyes on Marcus.
“Andrew didn't plan the accident alone. Vanessa didn't choose the route. And your mother didn't make the decision to follow Elena.””
Marcus felt his blood run cold.
“Who did?””
Margaret looked toward the security cameras.
Then she said:
“Your mother was following orders.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Whose orders?””
Margaret's smile disappeared.
“Your father's.””
The words followed Marcus home.
His father had been dead for fifteen years.
Yet Margaret insisted he had ordered Elena's death.
Daniel reviewed the recovered flash drive.
It contained old financial records, encrypted messages, and a scanned document signed by Marcus's father.
The date was three months before his death.
Marcus read the document twice.
It authorized payments to a private investigator.
The investigator's name was Paul Reeves.
The same detective who had handled Elena's accident.
Marcus looked up.
“Open the messages.””
Daniel did.
One email contained a message from his father to Margaret.
If Elena discovers the second trust arrangement, we must act before she reaches the authorities. Andrew understands what is at stake.
Marcus felt sick.
“What second trust?””
Daniel opened another attachment.
It was an inheritance agreement.
It named three beneficiaries.
Marcus.
Andrew.
And a third person whose name had been blacked out.
But the final page contained a handwritten note.
*The child must never know who her real guardian is.*
Marcus stared at the words.
Maya.
He looked toward the living room.
His daughter was sitting beside Ethan, laughing at something on television.
He had promised her that she would never again have to ask whether she belonged.
But the truth was still incomplete.
He turned to Daniel.
“Find the original trust.””
Daniel nodded.
“There's one problem.””
“What?””
“The trust was registered under your father's private family foundation. The foundation still exists.””
Marcus frowned.
“Who controls it?””
Daniel looked at the screen.
Then he slowly turned the laptop toward him.
The current trustee was listed.
*Olivia Bennett.*
Marcus stared.
The woman who had brought him the first evidence.
The woman who had revealed the hospital records.
The woman who had helped him uncover the accident.
She had been controlling the trust all along.
Before he could speak, his phone rang.
Olivia.
Marcus answered.
“Why are you the trustee?””
Silence.
Then Olivia whispered:
“Because your father made me promise to protect Maya.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“From whom?””
Olivia's voice broke.
“From the person who has been funding all of this.””
“Who?””
May you like
Olivia answered:
“Me.””
