Chapter 12: The Heir Nobody Expected

Marcus stared at the photograph.

“Then whose son is he?””

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“Your father's.””

For a moment, Marcus thought he had misheard.

“My father died fifteen years ago.””

“I know.””

“Ethan is fifteen.””

Vanessa nodded.

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

Andrew stood beside the boy with one hand resting proudly on his shoulder.

The resemblance was unmistakable.

But not to Andrew.

To Marcus's father.

The same deep-set eyes. The same narrow chin. The same expression in the photographs hanging in the Carter headquarters.

“Explain,” Marcus said.

Vanessa took a breath.

“Your father had a relationship with his personal assistant, Laura Bennett, shortly before he became ill.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That's impossible.””

“It happened.””

“Did my mother know?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She discovered the pregnancy. She offered Laura money to leave the country.””

Marcus felt sick.

“And Ethan?””

“Was born overseas. Andrew brought him back when he was seven.””

“Why?””

“Because Andrew discovered that your father's will contained a clause protecting any biological child born outside the marriage.””

Marcus stared.

“What clause?””

Vanessa opened the folder again.

“Your father had instructed his attorney to establish a separate inheritance for any child he might have had outside the marriage. The clause was never activated because nobody knew about Ethan.””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“So Andrew is trying to claim the inheritance on behalf of a child who isn't his.””

Vanessa nodded.

“He believes he can control Ethan's legal identity and use him to challenge the estate.””

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“Why would Andrew do that?””

“Because he wants the company.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Then why did he target Maya?””

“Because Elena found the original birth records and discovered Ethan's existence. She knew Andrew was trying to manipulate both inheritances.””

Marcus stared.

“Was Ethan involved in the accident?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. He was a child. He didn't know anything.””

Marcus leaned against the wall.

The family secrets were multiplying faster than he could process them.

His father had another child.

His brother had tried to manipulate the inheritance.

His mother had hidden the truth.

And Elena had died trying to expose it all.

But one question remained.

“Why are you helping me now?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because Andrew has decided I am no longer useful.””

Marcus gave a bitter laugh.

“You mean he abandoned you?””

“He froze my accounts. He removed me from the company. And yesterday, he told me that once Maya's custody case was settled, I would have no place in his plans.””

Marcus stared at her.

“So now you're afraid.””

“Yes.””

“At least that's honest.””

Vanessa took a step closer.

“Marcus, I know what I did to Maya was cruel. I know I have no excuse.””

He looked at her coldly.

“You humiliated an eight-year-old child in front of strangers.””

“I was trying to keep her away from the inheritance.””

“You pushed her chair away from the table.””

Vanessa lowered her head.

“I know.””

Marcus's voice became sharper.

“No, I don't think you do. She went to bed wondering whether she belonged in her own family. And you stood there smiling.””

Vanessa began to cry.

Marcus didn't comfort her.

“Your apology doesn't undo what you did.””

“I understand.””

“Then give me something useful.””

Vanessa opened the folder and removed a small envelope.

“Andrew has a meeting tomorrow morning with the estate attorneys. He intends to submit a new inheritance claim.””

Marcus took the envelope.

“What is this?””

“The name of the attorney handling it.””

Marcus read the name.

Then he looked up.

It was Margaret Ellis.

His own estate attorney.

He stared at Vanessa.

“Margaret is working for Andrew?””

“Not officially. But he has been paying her firm through a private consulting company.””

Marcus felt another wave of betrayal.

“Do you have proof?””

Vanessa nodded.

“It's all there.””

Marcus turned toward Daniel.

“Copy everything.””

Daniel took the folder.

Then Vanessa added something else.

“There is one more thing.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Andrew has a recording of Elena.””

“What recording?””

“A video she made before the accident. He has been keeping it hidden because it proves something about Maya's birth.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“What does it prove?””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“It proves Elena knew about the switched DNA samples.””

Marcus frowned.

“We already know that.””

“No. It proves she knew who ordered the switch.””

“Andrew.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not Andrew.””

Marcus stared.

“Then who?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Your mother.””

The following morning, Marcus met with Daniel and an independent attorney named Jonathan Reed.

Jonathan had been recommended by a judge who handled complex estate disputes.

He reviewed the documents Vanessa had provided.

After nearly an hour, he closed the folder.

“Marcus, you have enough evidence to challenge the custody petition and request an immediate forensic audit of the trust.””

“Can we stop Andrew from accessing the money?””

“Yes. But we'll need emergency court intervention.””

“And the inheritance claim?””

Jonathan nodded.

“We can challenge it too.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“What about the DNA report?””

“We'll request an independent test with witnessed collection from both you and Maya. We'll also subpoena the original laboratory records.””

Marcus nodded.

“Do it.””

Jonathan looked at him carefully.

“There's something else I want to ask.””

“What?””

“Are you prepared for what the DNA results might reveal?””

Marcus frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“If the original records were deliberately switched, we need to establish whether there was any additional manipulation. We cannot assume the first report tells the whole story.””

Marcus looked down at the table.

Then he said firmly, “I don't care what the results say. Maya is my daughter.””

Jonathan nodded.

“Good. Because that is the most important point in this case.””

At 11:30 a.m., Marcus received a message from Rebecca.

*The safety deposit box is in Boston. I found the number.*

She sent a photograph.

Marcus recognized the brass key from the old study.

The box was registered under Elena's maiden name.

They arranged for a private security team to accompany them.

By early afternoon, Marcus, Daniel, and Jonathan were standing inside a bank's secure document room.

A bank employee placed a small metal box on the table.

Marcus unlocked it.

Inside were several folders, a USB drive, and a sealed letter.

The first folder contained Elena's original hospital records.

The second contained Andrew's signed confession.

Marcus opened it.

I, Andrew Carter, acknowledge that I arranged for the original hospital samples to be replaced with samples obtained from another patient.

I did this to secure the inheritance rights associated with the Carter family trust.

I further acknowledge that my mother, Margaret Carter, was aware of the altered records.

Marcus stared at the signature.

Andrew had signed it.

But the next paragraph was worse.

I also acknowledge that Margaret Carter was responsible for the collision that resulted in Elena Carter's death.

Marcus put the document down.

Jonathan examined it.

“This is significant.””

Marcus nodded.

Then he opened the sealed letter.

It was from Elena.

Marcus,

If you are reading this, then you have found the truth.

I wish I could have told you everything myself.

I need you to understand that Andrew did not act alone. Someone else helped him arrange the transfer of the hospital samples.

Someone who had access to both families.

Someone who knew about your father's inheritance clause.

Marcus read the next line.

His expression changed.

The person responsible was not a stranger.

It was someone who shared my blood.

Marcus looked at Jonathan.

“What does that mean?””

Jonathan took the letter.

“Do you have a copy of Elena's family records?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel opened the second folder.

There was a photograph of Elena with her parents and sister.

On the back, someone had written:

*The three people who knew the truth.*

Marcus studied the photograph.

Elena.

Rebecca.

And their mother.

He felt a chill.

“Rebecca's mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“Possibly.””

Marcus picked up the USB drive.

“Let's see what's on it.””

Jonathan connected it to his laptop.

A single video appeared.

Elena sat in front of a camera.

Her face was pale, and she seemed exhausted.

“Marcus, if you're watching this, I'm sorry.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“I know you've been told that Andrew was Maya's biological father. That isn't true.””

Marcus leaned closer.

“Andrew arranged the first DNA test to make it appear that he was the father. But I discovered the real truth.””

Elena took a breath.

“The samples were switched by someone who had access to the hospital records and our family medical files.””

She paused.

Then she said:

“Marcus, Maya is your biological daughter. There is no doubt about that.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

A tear rolled down his cheek.

Elena continued.

“But there is another child whose existence could change everything.””

She lifted a photograph.

It showed a newborn baby.

“Ethan.””

Marcus stared.

“Ethan is not Andrew's son. He is the child of someone else in our family.””

Elena looked frightened.

“His mother is—”

The video suddenly cut off.

Jonathan frowned.

“Another damaged file.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No. Someone removed the rest.””

Daniel examined the drive.

“There are signs the file was edited.””

Marcus looked at the photograph of Ethan.

Then he remembered what Vanessa had said.

Ethan wasn't Andrew's son.

His father was supposedly the boy's biological father.

But Elena's letter suggested someone else entirely.

Someone who shared her blood.

Marcus's phone rang.

Rebecca.

He answered.

“I'm at the bank. We found Elena's documents.””

“Marcus, you need to listen to me.””

“What?””

“Andrew knows about the safety deposit box.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“How?””

“I don't know. But he called me ten minutes ago.””

Rebecca's voice shook.

“He told me he was going to expose the real identity of Ethan's mother.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“Who is Ethan's mother?””

Rebecca whispered:

“Your wife, Elena.””

Marcus froze.

“No.””

“Marcus, I have proof.””

His hand began to tremble.

“Are you telling me Elena had another child?””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at the photograph of the newborn.

Then at the incomplete video.

Rebecca continued.

“Ethan was born before Maya. And Andrew has been raising him as his own because he knew the truth would destroy the family.””

Marcus couldn't breathe.

If Ethan was Elena's child, then the entire inheritance scheme was built on another lie.

But there was something even more disturbing.

Elena had never mentioned another pregnancy.

Not once.

Not in all the years they had been together.

Marcus looked at Jonathan.

“We need to find Ethan's original birth records.””

Jonathan nodded.

“Immediately.””

Then Rebecca said one final thing.

“Marcus, there's a reason Andrew has kept Ethan close all these years.””

“What reason?””

“Because Ethan knows what happened to Elena.””

The line went silent.

Marcus stared at the phone.

He looked at the photograph again.

A newborn child.

A hidden identity.

A dead woman.

And a fifteen-year-old boy who might hold the final piece of the truth.

For the first time, Marcus understood that the story of his family had been rewritten long before Maya was born.

And someone was still determined to make sure the original version never came to light.
