Chapter 2: The Money Behind the Roses

The drive home was quiet.

Maya sat in the passenger seat, holding her silver purse against her stomach.

Marcus kept glancing at her.

At every red light, he wanted to ask another question. But he knew his daughter needed reassurance more than an interrogation.

Finally, she spoke.

“Daddy?””

“Yes, princess?””

“Are you angry with me?””

Marcus immediately pulled into a quiet parking space.

He turned toward her.

“Why would I be angry with you?””

“Because Vanessa said I ruined the party.””

His jaw tightened.

“You didn't ruin anything.””

“But everyone was looking at me.””

“Then everyone should have been looking at the person who pushed your chair away.””

Maya looked down.

“Maybe I shouldn't have asked to sit with you.””

Marcus reached over and gently moved a strand of hair behind her ear.

“Listen carefully. You are my daughter. You don't need permission to sit beside me.

You don't need permission to be loved. And you never need to earn your place in this family.””

Maya's eyes filled again.

“Promise?””

Marcus kissed her forehead.

“Forever.””

When they reached home, he prepared grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. Maya sat at the kitchen island while he changed out of his suit.

For a little while, things felt normal.

Then Maya quietly asked, “Daddy, why does Vanessa not like me?””

Marcus stopped cutting the sandwich.

He had no easy answer.

Vanessa had entered their lives three years after his first wife, Elena, died. At first, she had seemed wonderful with Maya. She bought her dresses, attended school events, and called her sweetheart.

Marcus had believed he was giving his daughter a chance to have a happy family again.

But somewhere along the way, the warmth had disappeared.

He had missed the warning signs.

“I don't know why she acts that way,” he admitted.

“But it isn't because there's anything wrong with you.””

Maya nodded, although her expression suggested she wasn't entirely convinced.

After dinner, Marcus tucked her into bed.

She held his hand.

“Will you still be here tomorrow morning?””

He smiled.

“I'm taking you to school.””

“Even if you have a meeting?””

“Even then.””

She finally closed her eyes.

Marcus waited until her breathing became steady before stepping into the hallway.

Then he called Daniel Brooks, his company's chief financial officer.

“Tell me everything.””

Daniel didn't waste time.

“Marcus, the party payments were made through the Elena Carter Children's Trust.””

Marcus froze.

“My daughter's trust?””

“Yes. The account was established by your late wife. It was supposed to fund Maya's education, medical needs, and future housing.””

“How much was transferred?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Approximately four hundred and eighty thousand dollars over fourteen months.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

“That's impossible.””

“I wish it were.””

“What were the transactions?””

“Event deposits. Jewelry purchases. Travel expenses.

Interior renovations. Several payments to a company called Vantage Events.””

Marcus walked into his home office and closed the door.

“Who approved them?””

“Your wife's signature appears on the authorization forms.””

“Vanessa?””

“Yes. But there's something else.””

Marcus sat down.

“Go on.””

“The account required two approvals for withdrawals above twenty-five thousand dollars. The second authorization came from someone inside your company.””

“Who?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Your brother, Andrew.””

Marcus stared at the wall.

Andrew had been his business partner for eleven years. They had built Carter Development from a small construction firm into a multimillion-dollar property group.

He had trusted him with everything.

“You're telling me my brother helped Vanessa take money from Maya?””

“I'm telling you the records point to that possibility.””

Marcus stood.

“Send me every document. Every transfer. Every signature.””

“I already have a preliminary file.””

“Then send the original records too. Nothing gets deleted. Nothing gets changed.””

“Understood.””

Marcus ended the call.

For several minutes, he sat in silence.

Then he opened an old photograph on his desk.

Elena was holding baby Maya in a hospital room. Her hair was messy, and she was laughing at something outside the frame.

Marcus remembered that day.

He remembered the way Elena had looked at their daughter and whispered, “I want her to grow up knowing she never has to beg for a place in this world.””

He had promised her.

Now he wondered how badly he had failed.

His phone rang again.

Daniel.

“Marcus, there's one more thing.””

“What?””

“The trust has a restriction. Vanessa couldn't legally use those funds for personal expenses without the trustee's approval.””

“Who is the trustee?””

Daniel paused.

“That's the problem. Your wife changed the trustee designation last year.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“To whom?””

“Your brother.””

Andrew.

Marcus ended the call and stared at the screen.

Before he could process the information, another notification appeared.

It was an email from the family's estate attorney, Margaret Ellis.

*Subject: Urgent — Elena Carter Trust Review*

The message contained only three lines.

Marcus, I received your inquiry about the trust. There is a document in Elena's original estate file that I believe you have never seen.

It concerns Maya's inheritance.

Please come alone.

Marcus read it again.

Then he noticed the date of the document.

It had been signed eleven days before Elena died.

He opened the attached scan.

The first page contained Elena's signature.

The second page contained a handwritten note.

And the final sentence made his blood run cold.

*If Marcus ever discovers that Maya's inheritance has been accessed without her consent, he must be told who really has legal authority over the account.*

Marcus stared at the words.

Who really had legal authority?

He immediately called Margaret.

She answered on the second ring.

“Marcus.””

“Why didn't you tell me about this before?””

“Because Elena specifically instructed me not to disclose it unless certain conditions were met.””

“What conditions?””

A long silence followed.

“Your wife believed someone in your household might eventually try to separate you from Maya.””

Marcus stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

“What?””

“She left instructions for exactly this situation.””

“Margaret, tell me who she was afraid of.””

The attorney exhaled.

“I think you should come to my office tomorrow morning. Bring your identification. And Marcus?””

“Yes?””

“Don't tell Vanessa about this document.””

He looked toward the hallway.

A floorboard creaked.

Marcus turned.

Vanessa was standing outside his office.

She had clearly heard something.

“Who was that?”” she asked.

Marcus slowly put his phone down.

“Work.””

Vanessa stepped inside.

“It's nearly midnight. You've been making calls all evening.””

“It's been a difficult day.””

She glanced at the papers on his desk.

Then she picked up one page.

Her eyes moved across the numbers.

For the first time since Marcus had married her, she looked genuinely frightened.

“Where did you get this?””

Marcus took the page from her.

“Why?””

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“Because those transactions were approved. You can't just accuse people without understanding the paperwork.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked toward the hallway again.

“Not tonight.””

Marcus folded the document.

“Tomorrow, then.””

Vanessa walked to the door.

But before leaving, she turned back.

“You should be careful about reopening things your first wife left behind.””

Marcus stared at her.

“My first wife?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She forced a smile.

“Because some things are better left buried.””

Then she walked away.

Marcus stood alone in his office.

He looked at the photograph of Elena.

And for the first time, he wondered whether his wife's death had left behind more than grief.

It might have left behind a secret someone was willing to steal, lie, and hurt a little girl to protect.
