Chapter 13: The Boy Who Knew the Truth

“Ethan knows what happened to Elena.””
Rebecca's words followed Marcus all the way home.
He sat in the back of his car, staring at the photograph of the newborn child.
A fifteen-year-old boy.
A boy Andrew had raised as his own.
A boy whose existence Elena had apparently kept secret from everyone.
Including her husband.
Daniel sat beside him, reviewing the documents.
“Marcus, there's something strange about the birth records.””
“What?””
“The hospital listed Ethan's mother as Laura Bennett. But the original insurance documents show that the pregnancy was registered under a different name.””
Marcus looked up.
“Whose name?””
Daniel turned the laptop toward him.
*Elena Carter.*
Marcus stared at the screen.
“That's impossible.””
“I checked the hospital's archived records. The original admission number belongs to Elena.””
Marcus looked away.
He remembered Elena's final years together.
He remembered their conversations about having another child.
He remembered her saying she wanted to wait until Maya was older.
Had she been pregnant without telling him?
Or had someone taken their newborn child?
His stomach tightened.
“Find Ethan.””
Daniel nodded.
“We have a possible location. Andrew enrolled him at a private boarding school in Connecticut.””
“Call the school.””
“I already did. He hasn't attended classes for four days.””
Marcus frowned.
“Where is he?””
“According to the school, Andrew collected him personally.””
Marcus looked at the photograph again.
“Then Andrew knows we're looking.””
His phone rang.
A number he didn't recognize.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A teenage voice spoke.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Ethan.””
Marcus sat upright.
“Where are you?””
“I can't tell you.””
“Are you safe?””
A long silence followed.
Then Ethan whispered, “I don't think so.””
Marcus's heart began racing.
“Listen to me. Nobody is going to hurt you. I want to help.””
“You don't understand.””
“Then explain it to me.””
Ethan breathed shakily.
“My father told me you were dangerous. He said you wanted to take me away.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Andrew isn't your father.””
“I know.””
Marcus went completely still.
“What?””
Ethan continued.
“I heard him talking to Vanessa. They said you found the documents.””
Marcus gripped the phone.
“Ethan, where is your mother?””
“She died.””
“Who told you that?””
“My father.””
Marcus felt a wave of anger.
“Ethan, your mother was Elena. She was my wife.””
The boy didn't respond.
Then he whispered, “I know.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
Ethan continued.
“I've seen pictures of her. I have a photograph she gave me when I was little.””
“Where are you?””
“An old house near the school.””
“Can you send me the address?””
“I can't. My father has people watching me.””
Marcus softened his voice.
“Ethan, I lost your mother. I lost years with Maya because people lied to me. I don't want to lose you too.””
A quiet sniffle came through the phone.
Then Ethan said something Marcus would never forget.
“She told me you would come back for me.””
Marcus's eyes filled.
Before he could respond, the call ended.
Twenty minutes later, Daniel traced the call to an abandoned guesthouse near the school.
Marcus drove there with two security officers.
The house stood behind a row of old trees. Its windows were dark, and weeds covered the narrow pathway.
Marcus knocked.
Nothing.
He knocked again.
“Ethan? It's Marcus.””
A window opened upstairs.
A teenage boy looked down.
He had dark hair and tired eyes.
Marcus immediately recognized Elena.
Not just a resemblance.
The same expression.
The same slight tilt of the head.
The door opened.
Ethan stood there wearing a gray sweatshirt and carrying a backpack.
“Are you really Marcus Carter?””
“Yes.””
Ethan studied his face.
“You look like the pictures.””
Marcus swallowed.
“Your mother kept pictures of me?””
Ethan nodded.
“She had a little box. Andrew took it after she died.””
Marcus stepped inside.
“Do you know what happened to her?””
Ethan looked toward the window.
“I remember the night.””
Marcus stopped breathing.
“What do you remember?””
Ethan sat on the sofa.
“When I was younger, Andrew used to tell me that my mother died because she was sick. But I remembered a car.””
He rubbed his hands together.
“I was in the back seat. There was a woman shouting. Then I heard glass breaking.””
Marcus crouched in front of him.
“You were in Elena's car?””
Ethan nodded.
“I think so.””
“Who was driving?””
“I don't remember everything. But I remember a woman wearing red shoes.””
Marcus exchanged a glance with Daniel.
“Rebecca?””
Ethan shook his head.
“No. Another woman.””
“Do you know her name?””
Ethan reached into his backpack.
He removed a folded photograph.
It showed Elena standing beside a woman outside a hospital.
The woman wore a red coat.
Marcus recognized her immediately.
Margaret Ellis.
The estate attorney.
The same woman Vanessa had identified as secretly working with Andrew.
Ethan pointed at the photograph.
“She used to visit my mother.””
Marcus studied it.
“Did you see her that night?””
Ethan nodded.
“She was there before the crash.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“What did she do?””
Ethan looked down.
“She gave Andrew something. Then he told Grandma Margaret to drive behind us.””
Marcus felt cold.
“Did you hear anything else?””
Ethan nodded slowly.
“I heard them arguing about a baby.””
“What baby?””
Ethan looked at him.
“Maya.””
Marcus sat back.
Ethan continued.
“Andrew said that if Maya disappeared, nobody would ever know who her real father was.””
Marcus's expression hardened.
“And the attorney?””
“She told him that the hospital records were already changed.””
Daniel immediately took out his phone.
“Marcus, this changes everything.””
Ethan looked frightened.
“Am I in trouble?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No, son.””
He paused.
Then he gently corrected himself.
“You're not in trouble. And nobody is taking you anywhere without your permission.””
Ethan's eyes filled.
“Can I see Maya?””
Marcus smiled sadly.
“Of course.””
When they arrived home, Maya was waiting in the living room.
She had been drawing with Olivia.
The moment she saw Marcus, she ran toward him.
“Daddy!””
He hugged her.
Then he stepped aside.
“Sweetheart, there's someone I'd like you to meet.””
Ethan stood awkwardly near the doorway.
Maya studied him.
“Who is he?””
Marcus knelt beside her.
“His name is Ethan. He's your brother.””
Maya's eyes widened.
“Really?””
Ethan smiled faintly.
“I think so.””
Maya walked closer.
“Do you like chocolate cookies?””
Ethan blinked.
“Yeah.””
“Good. We have some.””
For the first time that day, Ethan laughed.
Marcus watched them walk toward the kitchen.
Two children who had been separated by lies.
Two children who had been used as pieces in a fight over money.
He felt a quiet determination settle inside him.
He would not allow anyone to separate them again.
Later that evening, Ethan sat with Marcus in the study.
He placed a small silver pendant on the desk.
“My mother gave me this.””
Marcus picked it up.
Inside was a tiny photograph of Elena holding a newborn baby.
On the back were four words.
*For my first little miracle.*
Marcus's hands trembled.
“Where did you get this?””
“Andrew gave it to me after I turned ten. He said I should never ask about my real mother.””
Marcus looked at the pendant.
“Why did you keep it?””
“Because I knew he was lying.””
Ethan hesitated.
“There's something else.””
He opened his backpack and removed a small voice recorder.
“I recorded Andrew talking to Margaret Ellis two weeks ago.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“What did they say?””
Ethan pressed play.
Andrew's voice filled the room.
“The court hearing is next week. Once Marcus loses custody of Maya, the trust becomes easier to control.””
Margaret answered.
“And Ethan?””
“He'll do what I tell him.””
“What if he talks?””
Andrew laughed.
“He doesn't know enough.””
Then Margaret asked a question.
“And the accident?””
Andrew's voice became colder.
“That should have ended the problem. My mother was supposed to make sure Elena never reached the police.””
A pause.
Then Andrew said:
“But she made one mistake.””
Margaret asked, “What mistake?””
“She let Rebecca take the original recording.””
The recording stopped.
Marcus looked at Ethan.
“Did you hear anything else?””
Ethan nodded.
“There was one more thing.””
He pressed another button.
Andrew's voice returned.
“Margaret, if Marcus finds out who actually caused the collision, we're finished.””
Margaret replied:
“Don't worry. The person who hit Elena has already been paid.””
Marcus stared at the recorder.
“Who hit her?””
Ethan swallowed.
“That's the part I couldn't understand.””
He paused.
Then he said:
“Andrew wasn't driving the SUV.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Who was?””
May you like
Ethan's answer was barely audible.
“Vanessa.””
