Chapter 12: The House With Two Basements

I recognized his eyes before I recognized his face.

The young man in the photograph had dark hair, a small scar above his left eyebrow, and the same blue eyes I saw every morning when Maya looked at me.

Ethan.

My son.

Alive.

I stared at the image until my phone screen went dark.

Then I called the number.

It rang once.

Twice.

A man answered.

"Hello, Daniel.""

I knew the voice.

Gregory Shaw.

"Where is my son?""

"Somewhere safe.""

"Send me his location.""

"Not yet.""

I clenched my jaw.

"If you've hurt him—"

"Relax. Ethan is alive because I made sure he stayed alive.""

I felt sick.

"You're holding him hostage.""

Gregory sighed.

"You always did have a dramatic side.""

"Give me the address.""

"Bring the original trust agreement and the silver key.""

I looked at Michael.

He was silently shaking his head.

Gregory continued.

"Come alone. No police. No lawyers.""

"Why should I trust you?""

"You shouldn't. But you have no other choice.""

I heard a muffled sound in the background.

A chair scraping.

Then a young male voice.

"Don't listen to him, Dad!""

My heart stopped.

Ethan.

Gregory immediately covered the phone.

There was a brief struggle.

Then his voice returned.

"Tomorrow morning. Eight o'clock. The old Carter house.""

The call ended.

I looked at Michael.

"He's alive.""

Michael nodded.

"We'll get him out.""

I shook my head.

"Not if Gregory thinks we're coming alone.""

Michael picked up his phone.

"I'm contacting Brooks.""

"No.""

"Daniel—"

"Gregory specifically asked for the trust agreement. If he knows we've involved the police, he'll move Ethan.""

Michael looked at me.

"Then what do you suggest?""

I placed the phone on the desk.

"We give him what he wants.""

He stared at me.

"You're going to hand over the trust documents?""

"No. We're going to make him believe he has them.""

I called Sergeant Brooks.

She answered immediately.

"Daniel?""

"Gregory has Ethan.""

"I know. We've received the same photograph.""

"He wants me at the old Carter house tomorrow morning.""

"Absolutely not.""

"He's going to move him if I don't come.""

Brooks was quiet.

Then she asked, "What does he want?""

"The original trust agreement and the silver key.""

"We'll arrange surveillance.""

"There's another thing. Michael found a medical bracelet for Laura Bennett. Someone may be holding her too.""

Brooks exhaled.

"Then this is bigger than we thought.""

I told her about the house.

She agreed to coordinate a controlled operation, but insisted I wear a concealed recording device and follow her instructions.

I returned to the hospital.

Maya was asleep.

Thomas was sitting beside her, holding a book.

He looked up.

"Did you find him?""

I nodded.

"He's alive.""

Thomas closed the book.

"Ethan?""

"Yes.""

His eyes filled.

"Thank God.""

I sat beside Maya.

For a long moment, I simply watched her breathe.

Then Thomas handed me something.

A small envelope.

"I found this inside her drawing book.""

Rachel's handwriting.

I opened it.

Daniel,

If you ever find Ethan, tell him I am sorry.

He was a good little boy. He loved dinosaurs, chocolate milk, and building things with his father.

He didn't deserve what happened to him.

My eyes burned.

Rachel had known.

She had known about Ethan.

She had known my first family had been destroyed.

And she had spent years trying to repair something she hadn't broken.

I read the final paragraph.

There is a second basement beneath the old Carter house. It was built by my grandfather during the war. The entrance is hidden behind the wooden cabinet in the study.

Vanessa doesn't know about it.

If you need to find the truth, look there.

I stared at the paper.

The old Carter house had two basements.

I remembered visiting it with Rachel.

I remembered the wooden cabinet.

I remembered Eleanor standing in the doorway, telling me never to enter the basement because the stairs were unsafe.

Now I understood.

She hadn't been protecting anyone from dangerous stairs.

She had been protecting whatever was hidden underneath.

The following morning, at 7:40, I drove toward the old house.

Sergeant Brooks had arranged surveillance around the property.

Two officers were positioned near the road.

Another team waited several streets away.

I carried a folder containing copies of the trust agreement.

The original remained with Michael.

The silver key was in my pocket.

At exactly eight o'clock, I reached the front door.

It was unlocked.

Inside, the house smelled of dust and old wood.

The furniture was covered with white sheets.

A grandfather clock stood in the hallway.

Its hands were frozen at 11:48.

The same time Rachel's video had been recorded.

I moved toward the study.

The wooden cabinet stood against the far wall.

I pushed it.

Nothing happened.

Then I noticed a small metal handle underneath the bottom shelf.

I pulled.

A narrow panel opened.

Behind it was a staircase.

Cold air rose from below.

I took out my phone and sent a message to Brooks.

*Found the second basement. Entering now.*

Then I descended.

At the bottom was a small room with concrete walls.

There were shelves, a desk, several filing cabinets, and a metal door.

On the desk sat an old tape recorder.

Beside it was a photograph of Rachel as a child.

She was standing beside a little boy.

James.

But someone had scratched out the boy's face.

I opened the first filing cabinet.

Inside were birth certificates, medical records, and photographs.

Then I found a folder marked:

*THE CARTER CHILDREN — ORIGINAL RECORDS.*

My hands trembled as I opened it.

The first page was a medical report.

The second was a handwritten statement.

The third was a photograph.

It showed three children.

Rachel.

James.

And a little boy I had never seen before.

At the bottom, someone had written:

*Ethan Carter — Biological parentage disputed.*

I stared at the page.

Then I heard a sound behind the metal door.

Three knocks.

A pause.

Two more knocks.

I moved closer.

"Who's there?""

A voice answered.

"Daniel?""

I froze.

It was a young man's voice.

"Dad?""

I pressed my hand against the door.

"Ethan?""

"Please. Get me out.""

I searched the wall for a handle.

There was a small keyhole.

The silver key fit.

I turned it.

The door opened.

A young man sat on a narrow bed.

His wrists were bruised.

His face was pale.

But his eyes were unmistakably mine.

He stood slowly.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then he whispered:

"I knew you'd come.""

I stepped forward.

"Ethan...""

He suddenly backed away.

"Don't.""

I stopped.

"What's wrong?""

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

"Before you touch me, there's something you need to know.""

I swallowed.

"What?""

He looked toward the open doorway.

Then he said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew about my family.

"You're not my biological father, Daniel.""

I felt the room spin.

Ethan continued.

"Gregory is.""

I couldn't speak.

He wiped his face.

"And Maya...""

My heart began pounding.

"What about Maya?""

Ethan looked directly at me.

"She's the reason they kept me alive.""

Before I could ask another question, a door slammed somewhere above us.

Footsteps echoed down the stairs.

Then a woman's voice filled the basement.

"Well, Daniel.""

I turned.

Eleanor Carter stood at the top of the staircase.

Alive.

Smiling.

May you like

And holding a gun.

"Now that everyone is finally together," she said, "we can talk about what really happened to James.""
