Chapter 14: The Brother Who Came Back
The corridor ended at a steel door.
Sergeant Brooks reached it first.
"Stand back.""
An officer forced the lock.
The door swung inward.
Inside was a small room containing a desk, a bed, medical equipment, and dozens of photographs.
A man sat beside the window.
His hair was gray.
His face was thinner than in the photographs.
But I recognized him immediately.
James Carter.
Rachel's brother.
Sophie's supposed dead father.
The man we had buried three years earlier.
He looked up.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then he smiled sadly.
"Hello, Daniel.""
I couldn't move.
"James?""
He nodded.
"You're late.""
I stepped into the room.
"Where have you been?""
"Somewhere I couldn't leave.""
He looked at the officers.
"Please don't shoot me. I'm not going anywhere.""
Brooks approached cautiously.
"James Carter, you're under investigation for the alleged falsification of your death and multiple related crimes.""
James laughed weakly.
"That's fair.""
I stared at him.
"You let Rachel believe you were dead.""
His expression crumbled.
"I know.""
"She mourned you.""
"I know.""
"She spent years trying to protect your daughter.""
"I know, Daniel!""
His voice broke.
He covered his face.
"I know what I did.""
I looked around the room.
There were photographs of Sophie at different ages.
Some showed her playing in the garden.
Others showed her walking into school.
He had watched his daughter grow up from a distance.
"Why didn't you come back for her?""
James lowered his hands.
"Because Eleanor told me Gregory would kill her if I did.""
"Gregory is her biological father.""
James nodded.
"I found out before she was born. Vanessa told me the truth. I was angry, but I loved Sophie. I decided to raise her anyway.""
"Then why fake your death?""
"Because I discovered what Eleanor was doing with the trust. Gregory and Vanessa were stealing money. When I confronted them, they showed me documents proving they could destroy me.""
"What documents?""
"Evidence that I had been involved in the theft. Forged transfers. Fake signatures. Everything.""
He looked at the floor.
"They told me I could disappear quietly or spend the rest of my life in prison.""
"So you chose to disappear.""
"I thought I could expose them from a distance.""
I shook my head.
"You left a little girl believing her father was dead.""
James closed his eyes.
"Yes.""
For a moment, I hated him.
Then I remembered Rachel's letter.
She had written that James's statement was hidden in the blue trunk because she believed he had been murdered.
"Did Rachel know you were alive?""
James nodded.
"She found me about six months before she died.""
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"Because I asked her not to. I told her I needed time to gather evidence.""
"She died before you did.""
His face tightened.
"I know.""
Brooks stepped forward.
"Where is Gregory?""
James pointed toward the far wall.
"There's another exit. He knows the property better than anyone.""
Brooks immediately radioed her team.
I looked at James.
"Why did Eleanor say you had to finish what you started?""
He hesitated.
Then he opened a drawer and removed a small black notebook.
"Because I found the original trust documents. The ones Eleanor thought had been destroyed.""
He handed it to me.
Inside were records of payments, forged signatures, and names of people who had helped conceal the thefts.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Detective Robert Harlan.
Another appeared beside it.
Dr. Samuel Pierce.
And then I saw something that made my breath catch.
A payment had been made to a private medical facility under the name Laura Bennett.
"Laura is alive?""
James nodded.
"She was when I last saw her.""
"Where?""
"Gregory moved her after she threatened to expose the accident.""
I looked at Brooks.
"Sergeant, we need to find her.""
Brooks took the notebook.
"We'll get a medical team to the facility immediately.""
I turned back to James.
"Why did they want Ethan?""
James looked at me.
"Because Ethan was the only person who could prove what happened eleven years ago.""
He pointed to a photograph on the desk.
It showed a young Ethan standing beside Laura.
On the back was a handwritten note.
He remembers the car.
I felt cold.
"What does that mean?""
James took a breath.
"After your accident, Ethan told Laura he remembered seeing Gregory's car following yours. He was only ten, but he remembered the headlights and the crash.""
I looked at my son.
Ethan stood near the doorway, listening.
James continued.
"Gregory knew the boy had witnessed something. That's why they kept him away from you.""
Ethan stepped forward.
"I remember.""
I turned.
"Remember what?""
He swallowed.
"The night of the accident. Mom was driving. You were in the passenger seat. Another car hit us from behind.""
He looked at me.
"Gregory got out. He came to the window. He told Mom that if she ever spoke about the trust again, he would make sure none of us survived.""
My chest tightened.
"Why didn't you tell anyone?""
"I did. But they said I was confused. Then they took me away.""
I pulled him into my arms.
This time, he didn't step back.
He held on.
For eleven years, I had believed my son was gone.
Now he was standing in front of me.
And I was terrified that the truth would take him away again.
Brooks received a radio message.
Her face changed.
"What is it?"" I asked.
"We found Gregory's vehicle.""
"Where?""
"At the private medical facility.""
"Is Laura there?""
"We don't know yet.""
She listened again.
Then her expression hardened.
"There's been a fire.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"Was anyone inside?""
Brooks looked at me.
"Yes.""
Before she could say more, Ethan's phone began ringing.
He looked at the screen.
The number was blocked.
I told him not to answer.
But he did.
A woman's voice came through.
"Sweetheart?""
Ethan froze.
His face turned white.
"Mom?""
I grabbed his arm.
The voice continued.
"Ethan, listen carefully. I have very little time.""
He began crying.
"Where are you?""
"In the old house.""
I looked toward James.
His face had gone pale.
The woman whispered:
"Don't trust your father.""
Then the call ended.
Ethan slowly lowered the phone.
I stared at him.
"What did she mean?""
He looked at me with tears in his eyes.
"I don't know.""
James stood suddenly.
"That's impossible.""
"What's impossible?""
"Laura isn't supposed to be able to call.""
I felt a chill crawl up my spine.
"Why?""
May you like
James looked toward the basement stairs.
"Because Laura died eight years ago.""
