Chapter 8: The Name Rachel Hid From Me

I returned to the hospital before Sergeant Brooks left for the property.

The envelope was on Maya's bedside table.

Thomas stood beside it, his arms folded.

Maya was awake, watching us.

"Daddy?""

I immediately sat beside her.

"Hey, sweetheart.""

"Did you find Sophie?""

"We're trying.""

She looked at the envelope.

"Mom wrote that?""

I nodded.

"Did you know what was inside?""

Maya shook her head.

"She told me not to open it unless you found the blue box.""

I looked at Thomas.

He had already read the first sentence.

I carefully unfolded the paper.

Daniel,

There is something I should have told you long ago.

You know that my mother established the Carter Family Trust for the children. What you don't know is that the original beneficiary agreement was changed after James died.

I stopped.

The document continued.

James left a sealed statement before his accident. It named someone as the biological father of Sophie.

My stomach tightened.

I looked at Maya.

She was watching me carefully.

I continued reading.

The statement was never meant to become public unless there was a dispute over the inheritance. Vanessa discovered it and has been trying to obtain the original document.

I felt my fingers go numb.

Daniel, I never told you because I was trying to protect the family. I thought the truth would destroy relationships that were already fragile.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

James believed Sophie was not his biological daughter.

I looked up.

Thomas stared at me.

"What does that mean?""

I shook my head.

"I don't know.""

I continued reading.

The original statement is in the blue box, inside the small envelope marked J.C. Do not allow Vanessa to destroy it.

I remembered the six names on the list.

The money transfers.

The photographs.

The little recorder Sophie had hidden inside her teddy bear.

Everything pointed toward the same secret.

I reached into my pocket and called Michael.

He answered immediately.

"Daniel, we're at the property. The officers are checking the building.""

"I found another letter.""

"What does it say?""

I explained.

He was silent.

Then he asked, "Did Rachel identify the person James named?""

"No. She said the original statement was in the storage unit.""

Michael exhaled.

"Then you need to find it.""

I looked toward the hospital window.

"You're already at the property. What about Sophie?""

"We're still waiting for access.""

"Why?""

"Vanessa's attorney has arrived. He's claiming the child is under lawful guardianship.""

I closed my eyes.

"Of course he is.""

Michael lowered his voice.

"Daniel, there's something else. I checked the original estate records. Rachel's mother placed a restriction on the trust. If the children were separated or one was placed under an unauthorized guardian, an independent trustee would automatically assume control.""

"Who is the independent trustee?""

"That information is sealed.""

"Can you access it?""

"Not without the original statement or a court order.""

I looked at Rachel's letter.

She had known.

She had understood that Vanessa would try to control the children.

And she had left a way to stop her.

I told Michael to return to the storage facility as soon as possible.

Then I ended the call.

Maya was looking at me.

"Is Sophie my sister?""

I hesitated.

"She's your cousin, sweetheart.""

"But Mom said we had to stay together.""

I touched her hand.

"Then we'll do everything we can to make sure that happens.""

Maya looked down at the blanket.

"Aunt Vanessa said something once.""

"What?""

"She said if I told anyone about the blue box, I would lose my family.""

My throat tightened.

"She was wrong.""

Maya looked at me.

"Then why did you believe her for so long?""

The question hurt more than anything else.

I didn't try to defend myself.

"I should have listened sooner.""

Maya reached for my hand.

"You're listening now.""

I kissed her forehead.

A few minutes later, Sergeant Brooks called.

"We found Sophie.""

I stood immediately.

"Is she safe?""

"Physically, yes. She's frightened, but she's unharmed.""

"Where is she?""

"At the property. We're arranging for a child welfare specialist to interview her.""

"Can I speak to her?""

"Not yet. We need to establish the circumstances of the placement first.""

I gripped the phone.

"Please tell her I'm coming.""

"I will.""

Then Brooks added something unexpected.

"We also found Dr. Pierce's car outside the property.""

"Was he there?""

"No. But he left something behind.""

"What?""

"A medical bag containing prescription medication, blank forms, and a hospital identification bracelet with Maya's name.""

I felt sick.

"Why would he have Maya's bracelet?""

"We're investigating.""

I glanced at my daughter.

She had gone pale.

"Daddy?""

I covered the phone.

"Everything is okay.""

But I knew it wasn't.

The hospital identification bracelet meant someone had been preparing for Maya's transfer.

Not just a discharge.

A transfer.

I asked Brooks whether she had found any paperwork.

She hesitated.

"Yes. A document claiming Maya had been approved for placement with Vanessa.""

My jaw tightened.

"That's impossible.""

"That's what we believe. The signature is under review.""

I looked at the forged guardianship authorization.

The same old signature.

The same careful imitation.

Then Brooks said, "There's something else. Dr. Pierce's bag contained a copy of a document from Rachel's original medical file.""

"What document?""

"A handwritten note.""

"From whom?""

"Your wife.""

My heart pounded.

"What did it say?""

Brooks paused.

Then she read it aloud.

*If I am brought to this hospital unconscious, do not allow Dr. Pierce to treat me. He is working with Vanessa.*

I couldn't speak.

The room seemed to shrink around me.

Rachel had specifically warned the hospital about him.

Yet he had signed her death report.

I looked at Maya.

She was crying silently.

I held her close.

"Sweetheart, listen to me. Nobody is taking you anywhere.""

She pressed her face into my chest.

Then she whispered:

"Daddy, there's something else I haven't told you.""

I pulled back.

"What is it?""

She reached beneath her pillow and removed a folded drawing.

It showed our house.

The basement stairs.

And two figures standing at the bottom.

One was Rachel.

The other was a man.

I recognized his face.

It was Dr. Samuel Pierce.

But Maya had drawn something beside him.

A second person.

A woman holding a small silver object.

I stared at the figure.

"Who is this?""

Maya looked directly at me.

"That's the person who gave Dr. Pierce the medicine.""

My stomach dropped.

"Who?""

Maya pointed to the drawing.

May you like

Then she whispered:

"Grandma.""
